It's often speculation, but I wonder what would have happened if Cliff had lived. He seemed to be the one who would get the guys into cool underground stuff like the Misfits, and he seemed to have his imprint all over Masters of Puppets. I just wonder if Cliff had lived, would Mettalica have still cut their hair, softened their sound and gone with Bob Rock? Or with Cliff at the helm, Metallica would have kept pace with the Slayers and Panteras of the world in the 90's?

I don't know...I think maybe they would've had that harder sound they had with him. A lot of people think Metallica sold out...I don't really know if I agree with that or not. I love Metallica, they're my favorite band, but...I really didn't like St. Anger. So I hope that when they put out new stuff that it doesn't sound like that.

Let's face it, the Metallica of the 80's was an awesome sight to behold and hear, pummeling riffs, epic songs, 4 albums of thrashterpieces. In the 90's the black album had their best known and loved songs, and the album is their absolute peak. After a long hiatus they came back with Load and Reload and they sounded and acted like it was a completely different band, they cut their hair, didn't consider themselves metal anymore and seemed to go in a more blues direction. Probably some of their worst songs are on those albums. When I first heard St. Anger I was just happy that they were actually a band again after all their problems, abd they sounded angry and that they had something to prove. But after repeated listens, the album is a joke with the lousy non-production, the drum sound, the arrangements and the no guitar solo policy. It's too bad, but comparing the Metallica of the 80's to the one today is like comparing night and day.

I think they would have been alot better band. They lost alotta fans and respect when Lars went ape s h i t over that stupid Napster crap. The band's already millionaires many times over, so I didn't see his point. I think they soldout with their 1996 album "Load." They cut their hair. Cliff Burton should have (and probably did) roll over in his grave from that point on. I think Jason Newstead leaving hurt them alot too. St. Anger was by far the worst album I ever wasted money on. The drumming sounded like a washtub set. 1980s Metallica can never ever be duplicated. To me, it only got worse after the black album. I think that if Cliff had lived on, they would have only gotten louder, harder, and kept running right along with the likes of the Slayer and Pantera like bands. Lest ye not forgot Anthrax as well. That should be the 11th Commandment.....

P.S. Bob Rock ruined their sound as well

After watching the Some Kind of Monster DVD, I liked them less than people as ever before. In the 80'sthey had the mystique of these metal warriors who wouldn't do videos and all that flashy stuff. It was bogus why Jason had to leave the band, James is so hypocritical, he did some guest appearances on a COC album and he gives Jason a hard time. But yeah, Cliff seemed like the glue that could keep them together, it's al speculation, but who knows, he might have left mettalica for Megedeth or a cooler band in the 90's or something. Wasn't Mustaine's In my darkest hour dedicated to Cliff?

Yeah, I think James and Lars are a couple of hypocrites. I think that if Cliff were still alive, they could quite possibly still have that heavier edge to them. I think that they treated Jason like ****e- he was only doing a job and replacing Cliff. He didn't ask for the abuse. If they didn't want to continue without Cliff, they should have just hung it up, or started out with a new name, instead of handing out abuse to a hard working man.

And to rub salt into more wounds, I just laughed when Metallica rolled out the red carpet to Jason's replacement Rob by giving him a million dollars off the bat, what is that guilt money or something? You finally decide to treat the new guy with some respect after 20 years of acting like a-holes? All of a sudden you come to the conclusion that you gave Jason and even Mustaine a raw deal? But looking at the DVD, I barely recognize Lars anymore as the man who formed the band, the man who once collected every British metal import record, now all he seems to care about is his pricey artwork, his bling lifestyle, and wether or not kids are downloading his music and not getting more millions. It's like he traded his lunch pail for perrier water.

I'm suprised the band agreed to release Some Kind of Monster as it portrayed James and Lars as two whiny b i t c h e s. If their next album is as bad as St. Anger, they may as well go ahead and break up. I hope it does sell poorly after the way they've treated fans amd past band members. Thet just aren't the Metallica they used to be. Maybe Cliff would have went off and started another great band? I couldn't see him letting things get as bad as they have with the band. He'd woulda/shoulda left long before now had he still been around. I think Newsted was better off by getting outta the band. I got to meet the band back in 1996 and he was the only one who wasn't an arsehole. Mustaine and Burton coulda started a whole new band or at least kept Metallica pointed in the right direction........

Thing that gets me the most about Metallica is that when they were an underground band they prided themselves that their fanbase was from word of mouth and people owning pirated copies of their music. Now that they became rich and famous all of a sudden it's not ok for people to get pirated vesions of their music or in this case downloaded songs which in a sense is the same thing. I still love the old Metallica music and a few songs off their last few releases but their holier than thou attitudes makes it harder and harder to remain a fan of theirs.

RIP Cliff

I've always thought Lars was kinda, I don't know, c o c k y. I watch Rockstar: Supernova every night, and see Jason Newsted on there. He seems like this nice, normal guy. It's a shame he got treated like crap. I hope he has a lot of success with Supernova.

Just been reading about Cliff recently. Apparently he came up with the debut album title Kill em All after the original title Heavy Metal up your a$% was rejected by the record company. He also used to carry a hammer around like the one on the record sleeve. I guess he felt the need to break stuff every once in a while!

Well Im happy to hear Im not the only one who totally abandoned ship after Jason left. hahaha. In my opinion the "black album" was the last decent album they did. Everything else has been crap for me. Crap, I say! And its a pity too as they were at one time my favorite band (I listened to the Four Horsemen yesterday and just about got a tear in my eye!) As if their music going downhill wasnt enough then Lars started making a public *** of himself and then the movie! Geez almighty! I didnt see all of it but while channels urfing one day I caught some, and some was more than enough! Who is this guy buying expensive art work? Cuz it suire as **** isnt the Lars Ulrich I knew and loved! They were everything they probably used to make fun of now. Millionaires who carry briefcases instead of guitars.

And I have to add that I also met them and - yes, jason was the nicest most down to Earth one in the band . (Lars was pretty okay, but James and Kirk were total a holes! Very obnoxious!)
