Starting to get creative with some of my 80's music, making some compilations and I have one with some favorite, yet kind of downbeat songs. I have the Motels Only the Lonely and Quarterflash's Harden my Heart on it, was wondering which song grabs you more?
There was always something about this Motels song and Suddenly last Summer that just sort of had this sad quality to me, and the Quarterflash song sounds less sad, and a bit more angrier.

I Love both of those songs...pretty equally. I have the videos for Take Me to Heart-Quarterflash and Suddenly Last Summer-The Motels on the same DVD. Those are also both awesome songs.

Yeah I like the Motels for "Suddenly Last Summer" and "Only the Lonely Can Play." They are perfect to listen to while taking a drive on a hot summer night!
However, I have to go with Devo on this one. Quaterflash never gets old. The bass line in "Harden My Heart" is hypnotic and I frequently jam out to the Fast Times soundtrack. Lots of little gems on that one. "Don't Be Lonely" is a great tune...I didn't think anyone else knew it or liked it.

I have both both greatest hits from the Motels and Quarterflash. Another good song and a good group I put on the compilation is Romeo Void's A Girl in trouble is a temporary thing. The song meshes so well with Harden my Heart. I seem to like those early 80's female fronted bands with that hint of angst. They just don't make music like this much anymore.

I love the Motels so I'd always pick 'Only the lonely' over 'Harden my heart'. But they're both good songs.

Does anyone have current pictures of the 2 lead singers from those bands?? Has anyone ever seen them on a "Where Are they Now? episode??? I looked a little like the lead singer of the Motels...in the Suddenly Last Summer video, I had her hair in the 80's, exactly...and I definately wore a ton of eye make up.

Here is the website and group photo of The Trail Band. It features the husband-wife team of Marv & Rindy Ross (of Quarterflash). I have never seen or heard them perform, but judging from the website, they sound NOTHING like Quarterflash!

I taped that show Hit me one more time earlier this year, and Martha Davis and a few members of the Motels performed. As for Quarterflash, I would have thought they would have been an MTV reuniting the bands with Quarterflash, but I guess we know what they are doing now.

Harden My Heart is very melancholy. Isn't it amazing when you are in certain moods and then you hear a song that fits it. Given the right situation I could ball like a baby if I heard this one. Fortunately, everything is going great now so that wouldn't apply! LOL
Suddenly Last Summer is very dreary as well. I remember hearing The Motels sing this on Hit Me Baby One More Time, last summer on NBC.
I would still say Harden My Heart!

I was thinking how much I miss these sort of songs. I am so sick of the bogus processed vocals(i.e. Akon, T-Pain), the same kind of production. Where are the 2000's meloncholia songs? The country's at war, in debt, the media's out of control, it's like feminism never happened. And these fools are parading in their videos with champagne, telling everyone how much they liked to kiss a girl. .....Sigh, I just wasn't made for these times. And bring back Sax in songs that aren't jazz.

I'd recommend "Voices Carry" and "What About Love" by 'Til Tuesday and "Dreams Come True (Stand Up and Take It)" by Lone Justice for your comp. They go together with the 2 Motels songs and "Harden My Heart" very well.

I always found Romeo Void's a Girl in Trouble(is a temporary thing) goes great after hearing the QuarterFlash song. They are kind of similar feeling, although not as dark.
