I've started collecting Vinyl singles again Chloe, during the 80s I had built up a fairly decent collection, mixture of 7" Vinyls + LPs but they went missing and I think my older brother took them when I moved out of home,i was the youngest but the first one to move out!

Anyhow I've started collecting again and I must say I have really missed the sound you get from playing Vinyl,i've only got an entry level turntable but the sound is awesome,it sounds so much more Natural with none of that high pitch you get with some digital recordings.

I'm so pleased I got back into collecting Vinyl and I am trying to pick up most of or if not all of the records I had as a teen!

Here's my latest two pick ups -

 -

https://youtu.be/3T2VizbQAwY - Kim Wilde - Cambodia

https://youtu.be/s1qfx2X6qaU - a-ha - The Living Daylights

I've been involved in record-collecting and deejaying for many, many years, and even managed to get
a "special thanks" credit on the back-cover of two officially released vinyl records. [Cool]

Currently i still own between 5000 and 6000 records, two professional turntables (a Technics SL 1210 and a Stanton ST.150),
and an array of different needles.

I honestly believe a record collection reflects the personality of its owner.

My husband and I found a lot of 80's singles at thrift stores, in the 1990's. Now they are impossible to find. My favorite slipcover is Cinderella's Night Songs. LP's are nonexistent around here too, unless it's some garbage from a 1950's cutout bin. I never see any at garage sales anymore either. Do people sell them in EBay?

What do those two records above say about my personality Johnny apart from that I think I'm James Bond and that I've got a thing for hot blondes! [Big Grin]

Johnny is there actually much of a difference in playback when you use certain types of needles and turn table mats or is not to be believed?

I would imagine that the quality of needle used especially on high end equipment must make a difference!

Try eBay Pittsburghgirl, loads of people on there selling old vinyl and you can pick up a lot of it at bargain prices!

Hey Pittsburghgirl. Do you ever go to estate sales? On occasion I find some good albums and usually they are cheap.

Yeah, there is.. but the main difference is in the turntable itself. These are machines that are built to last,
even under the heaviest circumstances. The direct-drive motor system (instead of belt-drive) is nearly indestructable.
The sound on my Stanton turntable is extremely well isolated. The machine weighs around 16 kg (over 35 lbs).

There is a difference in sound between various needles though. Most common nowadays are the ones from Ortofon,
but personally i'm not really impressed. They're good when it comes to tracking and stability, but i prefer the sound
of the older ones from Stanton. They produce a louder sound with much more bass.

In the end, it all depends on one's personal taste, of course.

Love the conversation here about turntables and LPs. And I agree with you, JR. Those direct drive turntables were built like tanks. I remember when I worked in radio in the 1970s, I was at a 24-hour (which at the time was unusual) FM station. We had two commercial turntables--I forget who made them--that were on 24/7, 365 days a year. (And they lasted for years!) The drive motor had three positions, "off," "idle," and "engaged." We had those things in "idle" constantly. For folks unfamiliar with being a disc jock in the old turntable days, you couldn't just drop the needle to play the record. The turntable took about a half of a revolution to come up to speed. So what you did was, you monitored off-air through headsets the start of the song, and then turned off the turntable and cranked it back by hand the half-revolution or so. That way, when you hit "on," the turntable came right up to speed just as the song started. Do it wrong, and you get this sad "Wwwwwwww...hen...the niiiiiight...has come, and the land is dark..." And if your boss heard it, you'd get the disapproving glare. LOL I worked so much that I came up with an alternate approach that I'd use where I'd just hold the record down and knock the motor from idle into on with my elbow, watch the turntable spin the half-turn, and then let the record go.

This was one of those skills that is now pretty much a dead art with everything now being digital. Another thing that is a dead art is "pegging the lyrics," in other words, talking over the introduction of a song and stopping precisely as soon as the lyrics began: example, "It's a cool 54 degrees out there now in the City, headed down to a low of 47. Lottery results coming up after the break. Here's Barry Manilow. 'I remember all my life...raining down as cold as ice.'" Again, you'd get the disapproving glare of the boss if you mistimed it and talked over, a/k/a/ "jumped on," the lyrics. Some of us were much better than others at it. I remember one Saturday night--out of boredom--I pegged five songs in a row perfectly. I'm sure that my showing off was darned irritating to the listeners. ROFL

Those turntables sure must have been well made to take that sort of stick being played 24/7 all year long!

Gotcha is one of those soundtrack albums i´d like to get my hands on.
It doesn´t appear to ever have had a legitimate CD release which is a shame. It was also released on MCA label so there´s no hope for a re-release.

Great soundtrack Atomik from a really fun movie, also picked up Thief Of Hearts on Vinyl a little while back as well which is equally awesome!

I've noticed some of the LP's that i have been picking up have a small notch cut out (Gotcha LP bottom right hand near the corner) from there covers which I'd imagine is something to show that they are imported though I could be wrong!

Not imported warrior but it happens to be a deeply discounted or remaindered copy.

I´ve always hated that policy they practiced mainly in the US i believe.
I mean, i would by the copy if i´d see one cut-out or not but it´s a VIOLATION of the product [Mad]

So that's what it is I have got quite a few in a small collection of 12" LP's that have the cut outs and I'm certainly not keen of the pratice as it defaces the cover!

I agree Terd it's great soundtrack and really fun movie as was director's Jeff Kanew's and Anthony Edwards earlier collaboration Revenge Of The Nerds!

Hey Warrior. What do you play your records on? A vintage console stereo, a record player from the 80s or a modern player

It's a modern player terd an Audio Technica At-Lp60 which is only an entry level model but for under 100 Uk pounds i think it's a bit of a bargain as it sounds pretty sweet -
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-AT-LP60USB-AT-LP60-USB-Turntable/dp/B00EUSMFPQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473449878&sr=8-1&keywords=audio+technica+record+player

For getting back into vinyl this is in my opinion a great starter model and it has a built in phono/line preamp for easy connection to an amplifier.
