I actually enjoy some of the bad, overblown, pretentious lyrics in 80s songs. How about this one from REO Speedwagon, "Can't Fight This Feeling":

i like toto as well, but that, kilamanjero bit does sound pretentious

crash i agree, speedwagon also a good band, but a cheesy line

i agree with you lomax, i can see the inspiration for a song

a little off the subject here but, do you guys think sandra bernhard ever inspired any tunes?
