A new 18-song compilation covering tracks by Joy Division to New Order — titled 'Total: From Joy Division to New Order' is set to also include a previously unreleased New Order song called “Hellbent.”
Due out in June , the compilation is the first to combine the Ian Curtis lead Joy Division material with several New Order tracks on the same release.
The new 'Total' disc opens with five of Joy Division’s best known tracks (”Transmission,” “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” “Isolation,” “She’s Lost Control” and “Atmosphere”) before segueing into a chronological run of a dozen New Order singles plus the new song, of which little is known at this point.

Until recently I could easily state that I've always been more of a fan of tunes by New Order over the few choices by Joy Division. But, I also remember being amazing on a previous thread by how many Rewinders at that time were devoted Joy Division fans.
And of course, I've known for a long time that my good pal NowhereGirl was a huge Joy Division fan and intrigued by the backstory behind the tragedy that surrounded Ian Curtis. However, I never quite understood it all until she convinced me to watch the movie "Control".
Wow... I must say that "Control" is a rather dark, but hauntingly beautiful film! It gave me such a better understanding of the curiosity so many seem to have about Ian Curtis and his tortured soul. As well as some insight into why he committed suicide just when Joy Division was about to become incredibly successful.
The performance of Sam Riley as Ian Curtis was just downright amazing.. especially after Ronnie told me that the actors in the movie actually sang and played the tunes for real. Both Samantha Morton and Alexandra Maria Lara were excellent in very different roles that were focal points of the movie. My fav scene was when Morton's character questioned Riley in the street and the tune "Love Will Tear Us Apart" starts to play.
Also, the DVD extras included a performance by the real Joy Division which made the movie seem that much more haunting for me to experience. After watching "Control".. I have a new appreciation for the music of Joy Division and the genius of the darkly troubled Ian Curtis.
Totally realize this new 18-song compilation only has one new tune of interest to most devoted fans.. but I highly recommend it if you are similar to myself and just starting to truly appreciate some of these tunes.
I actually heard New Order's "Temptation" on the radio this morning and it is currently stuck in my mind.

i'm glad you enjoyed Control. you totally got everything that i found to be so awesome about this movie.
the acting performances were awesome, as well as the band performances.
val, the scene you mentioned where 'Love Will Tear Us Apart" plays was done really well. and Sam's wardrobe throughout the movie.. well.. Ian's style, i guess is way cool...plus it being filmed in black and white!
another really intense scene in the movie, was where Ian was unable to go out on the stage and sing, he was having major anxiety, and feeling the pressure from the crowd as they are cheering for him..but when he decides to suck it up and sing (Disorder), he quickly runs off stage and the crowd starts to go nuts.
great extras on the dvd and the Joy Division Documentary is great as well.
thanks for the info on the new cd. i didn't know this will be the first time their songs were together on one mix..that's great!

I am just now getting into JOY DIVISION, which is really strange. I dont know why no one never turned me onto them as a teenager (my older sister got me into NEW ORDER)...I think I would have 'gotten' them more as a teenager , they were depressing and so was I! I think thats why in my early 20s and in my 30s I preferred NEW ORDER: more uplifting and more 'hope'.
I just recently watched CONTROL about a month ago and whle I DO higly recommend I just wanna warn people I felt TERRIBLE for about a week after I watched it! Its just ssooooo sad. Now whenever I hear JOY DIVISION my heart just breaks.
Has anyone seen 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE? I have it on ny list but I keep putting it off because I cant imagine going through "watching Ian die" again!

^ Also....have you guys heard SHE WANTS REVENGE? Its a new-er band that sounds like JOY DIVISION was probably #1 in their books. If these guys claim theyve never heard JOY DIVISION tapes thay are LYING! The influence is so freakin strong in their music!

ha, my father told me the other day "we watched one of your favorite movies".. i was like, "which one?"...
he said "Control." i was like, "right on, Dad!"
then he tells me, he had never heard of Joy Division before.
i couldn't believe my ears, because he's a musician!!! i said "reeeeeally,...what....?"
he said after watching the movie, he immediately went to the internet and starting reading everything about the group and Ian.
so crazy how this movie has that effect on all of us, huh???
i think it's totally cool. there are a lot of people that know New Order's music, but had no idea about JD. then it's like, story time! haha.. i love talking about JD and this movie. such a terrific film. i am glad my parents liked it, but was still very shocked my father had never heard of them before. well.. he's never been much of a punk, or post punk music lover, but still.. i thought he knew everything ha.

^--- Recently watched this! Great little documentary on Joy Division with interviews from the surviving members of the band that went on to form New Order. Incredible footage from performance by Joy Division and an indepth look at the musical genius that was Ian Curtis.
Thought it was a cool tribute to the memory of Ian Curtis that New Order went almost 18 years without playing a Joy Division tune in concert. That changed in a few years back and you get a real treat though only a snippet towards the end of the documentary.
I would still recommend watching the hauntingly beautiful movie "Control" first, but it was amazing listening to the band stories in the documentary and remember those scenes in the movie.
I have to thank NowhereGirl for guiding my journey into the world of Joy Division.
And I totally wanna see New Order in concert again someday!

I'm an '80's kid & am a big fan of New Order; lesser fan of Joy Division. However, the bands are inextricably connected, so there's no way you can discuss one without mentioning the other.
That being said, while I find Joy Division's sound somewhat dismal & dark (which I know was intentional), New Order's music is, overall, fresh & hopeful; they're my all-time favorite rock/pop band. I also consider NO to be one of the (if not the) early fore-runners of techno music.
Re: NO, I have too many favorite songs - but, among them are:
Bizarre Love Triangle extended version - this is possibly my favorite rock/pop song of all time. This song truly moves me, even 30+ years after first hearing this.
Temptation - my second favorite NO song. Really liked the way this song was used in one of my favorite films, Trainspotting. Superb!

To all NO fans, I would also recommend the boxed set Retro (2003) - if you can get this for a good price. This got mixed reviews & can be expensive on the secondary market, but I really enjoy this set - I got it for only $30 used several years back - though the box was somewhat worn, the CD's were in perfect shape. Here's one of the better reviews of this set:
New Order has a new album that was released in Fall 2015, Music Complete. And, it's excellent! I think it's their best one of the 21st century, and really brings to mind their '80's songs. I feel like I'm discovering their music for the first time when listening to this. Favorite songs on this album include: Restless, Singularity, Plastic, Tutti Frutti, Academic, and others. Fantastic!
Also, as was mentioned, these two movies are highly recommended to fans of JD, though NO fans will probably like them as well:
24 Hour Party People - great portrait of the music "scene" in Manchester, England back in the late '70's - late '80's.
Control - very powerful, depressing, and dark b&w bio-pic focusing exclusively on Joy Division. Though I'm more of a NO fan, Control gave me a much greater appreciation of JD's relatively small body of work (and it was only small because they weren't around for that long). I would also say that Control is quite possibly the best bio-pic. I've seen about a rock group (if you want to consider JD a rock group).....we'll always wonder what would have happened with JD if Ian Curtis had lived; he passed on just before they were going on their first U.S. tour.

To add to my last post about NO, in Fall 2015 they released an excellent new album, "Music Complete".
It's not only interesting that the group is still around, but the fact that they can put together an album that's great over 30 years after the group started is amazing. And, MC is arguably almost as good - if not as good - as any album they came out with in the '80's. In any case, it's definitely their best album since the '80's.
I feel like I'm discovering their music for the first time when listening to this.
Favorite songs on this album include: Restless, Singularity, Plastic, Tutti Frutti, Academic, and others.

Nostalgic for the 80's, got the new New Order recently but haven't listened to it yet. How do you feel about Peter Hook not being in the band anymore? I love his basslines, it's a bit different thinking he's doing his own thing now in Peter Hook and the light. Have you seen or heard them covering Joy Division?

I've always felt that the success of "New Order" was because of their collective group effort than because of the series of individuals in the group...like the success of all good bands. So, I'm indifferent to Peter Hook's leaving the band. As far as I'm concerned, his absence doesn't hurt the group at all.
In fact, I feel that 2015's "Music Complete" album is superb, and their best album since the '80's - it also reminds me of their best '80's sounds/music - and this is the first NO album without Hook.
I've seen a couple of live performances of Peter Hook and the Light online - here's one in which he performs JD's iconic song "Love will tear us apart" - I find it adequate; the song is performed well from a technical/instrumental/sound stand-point, but that's about it:
