I love this Bruce Hornsby song. "Listen to Mandolin rain....listen to the music ......" I haven't heard anything from him in so long. I also love the fact that he kind of re-introduced the piano in rock music in the late 80's. Of course we had Billy Joel and Elton John, but the sound of Hornsby is so unique.
This song is so soothing and relaxing. I remember having this tape after it came out, I think I am going to look for a greatest hits CD from him because he is one that just doesn't get enough credit for his contributions to music.
Does anyone have any fond memories of this one?

You're right, it's a great song. And it's perfect for a rainy afternoon!
Here's the lyrics:
"MANDOLIN RAIN" Bruce Hornsby & the Range
The song came and went Like the times that we spent Hiding out from the rain under the carnival tent I laughed and she'd smile It would last for awhile You don't know what you got till you lose it all again
CHORUS: Listen to the mandolin rain Listen to the music on the lake Listen to my heart break every time she runs away Listen to the banjo wind A sad song drifting low Listen to the tears roll Down my face as she turns to go
A cool evening dance Listening to the bluegrass band takes the chill from the air till they play the last song I'll do my time Keeping you off my mind But there's moments that I find, I'm not feeling too strong
CHORUS
Running down by the lakeshore She did love the sound of a summer storm It played on the lake like a mandolin Now it's washing her away once again
CHORUS
The boat's steaming in I watch the sidewheel spin and I Think about her when I hear that whistle blow I can't change my mind I knew all the time that she'd go But that's a choice I made long ago
CHORUS

I think this was one of the most played songs on the radio as the 80s wound down. It's still one of Hornsby's best. I have it on the copy of "The Way It Is" I got for my birthday last month.

Steven, thanks so much for the lyrics. I can hear the song playing perfectly in my head now. It has been a little while since I heard it.
Devo--I forgot about the White Water Summer connection with Bruce Hornsby. It has been a while since I have seen it and had totally forgotten about it.
