I collect 80s music as much as I do movies, so this is something I deal with often. Sometimes a cd I'm searching for goes for $100, $200, $300.... crazy! I can't afford to pay that much, so I have to go without Not fun for a collector to do.
The most I've spent is around $75, which is still quite a bit for me to spend on a cd. I know the answer will likely depend on how much money you make, but I'm just curious what some of you have paid or would pay if you could find that one rare album you are looking for.
Even if you don't buy music that often, how much is your limit if you simply had to have something? Where would you draw the line? Is there a line?

I'm more of a movie collector for sure. I haven't really paid alot for a cd or album.....not more then $25.
But that being said...........I've never owned the Better Off Dead soundtrack.........and it's one i've always loved.....there isn;t a song in the movie I hate. So the CD is going for something @ $150 nowadays and I would never pay that.
So the most I think I would pay for it would be $40..........somehow that's a cut off for buying movies for me too.....not that I wouldn't have it. I guess in my head that's too much for me to spend? am I weird? $40 was my limit when I bought my Teen Witch VHS many years ago haha funny that my brain hasn't let the market value increase over the years.
Cool topic Admirer.......You going to tell us what you happily spent $75 on?
Do you guys think the Better Off Dead soundtrack will ever get a re-release?? I am lucky because Miss Mancini made me a copy of some of the songs many years ago that I treasure. But I feel it's crazy I don't own the actual album!!! I feel like it's something i'm always missing......""must be after affects of not going to my highschool prom"" haha

I´m buying so much stuff that i can´t pay more than 30 euros for one cd. And that happened only once.
Nowadays there are so many re-issue labels that almost everything will be re-issued sooner or later. Only MCA (and maybe some other labels) seems to be one company which doesn´t sell re-issue rights easily.
Two weeks ago i was lucky enough to find 2 quite cheap MCA soundtrack cd´s. (Beverly Hills Cop 2 and Miami Vice III)
the cd i spent 30 euros was Erika: Lady Luck (1993) I also wanna know what cd was worth 75$

'Happily' isn't the word I'd use to describe my feeling...stupid ebay...haha. I think I paid around $75 for the album 'Motive' by Red Box and the album 'With These Hands' by The Farmer's Boys. This was a few years ago. Somewhat recently I spent a fair amount for 'Wild Child' by E.G. Daily. Gotta be careful to dodge all the bootlegs out there too.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, guys!

I thought this thread was about vinyl I inherited my Mom's love to shop and my Dad's frugal-ness-I'm somewhere in the middle. It's physically impossible for me to pass up a good deal.
I'd spend about $40 or so probably. If something is out of print I would make do with what was available until it reappeared. On the other hand, I couldn't part with my faves when the VHS/DVD transition was going on.
I collect pewter fantasy figures, I spent $100 for a LE signed piece. So for me, $100 would be the limit.

Yep Bamersy, it can be CD or LP or whatever you collect I guess. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. So would $100 be the limit for a pewter figure only, or does that apply to movies and music as well?

I am a huge music collector as most of you guys already know, but I switched to ALL digital because it is easier and much cheaper. Having the original CD, album, etc. isn't important to me. I actually sold my entire CD collection on ebay.... the MUSIC is most important for me.

Hard to say-I get obsessive about stuff then I move on to something else.
I considered saving up for Valley Girl-it was $85 as VHS had just come on the market. Seemed an impossible amount with a $5 a week allowance
I special ordered Liar's Moon from Sears way back when, paid $30. It had the sad ending which I was only partially ready for, having read there was an alternate.
I have found I can justify any purchase, no matter the amount-if I try hard enough

Bamersy.. 'That's easy.. take it back and get a more expensive one. The expensive ones always fit better.'

This made me laugh - I can relate
I agree that all-digital is the way to go. I have everything on hard drives and backed up. But I still need to buy those rare albums so I can rip them and add them to my digital collection.

Secret Admirer.. I own a Pioneer laserdisc player and about 30 laserdiscs.. so obviously I have no limit.
My foolish spending over the year hasn't been on the rare vinyl or VHS tape.. instead more on the cutting edge equipment my movie and music collection is played back on. I've had a Yahama receiver in my arsenal since I bought my first one from my brother at the age of 16. Thus the beginning of my descent into the world of 'Quinton is in, let the fun begin!'

Laserdiscs are really fun to collect, and can be expensive, so I'm with ya there, Valley.
I haven't started buying the new tech yet, and not sure when I will. I was thinking of getting a Samsung LED tv for xmas this year, but now I'm hearing that my old VHS tapes and 8-bit Nintendo will look bad on the hidef screen. I don't know what to do... I guess more research. Maybe it's time to start a thread about hidef movie watchin' and video game playin' for us 80s fans.

Believe me, I have a great appreciation to collecting rare and original items...such as CDs, albums, etc. I HAD to go digital though, or I would be BROKE by now! My Iron Maiden collection of gems is costly enough!

I hear ya, 80sR. I'd like to see your Iron Maiden collection, it sounds awesome. But just out of curiosity, if you couldn't find something digitally (itunes, free downloads, etc.), how much would you spend for it? What is the most you spent on an item in your Maiden collection?

My "get real you crazy bugger" line grew substantially smaller when I had my son four years ago...being married and having kids have certainly changed my priorities. That being said, Ive always been a collector, and there's something about collectors' brains that sometimes just ain't right! When I want something, and it's hard to get...I seem to want it more just because of that reason. My official answer...CDs and music were always my top priority, until about five to ten years ago...mostly everything is digital, though I aim to have real copies of my favorites artists, and most of my 80's stuff...likley wouldn't pay much more than $20 for a CD and rarely buy them at all. 80's movies are now my top priority, and I usually try to pay no more than $10 if I can help it. Will occasionally splurge if I really want it, and will sometimes put a more expensive gem on my Christmas list in hopes that my wife will have a brief moment of insanity and once again support my habit....hmmmmmm.....shamfully, I spent $30 last year on, ummmm....FAT ALBERT'S CHRISTMAS SPECIAL!!! Please don't think less of me....A special thank you to my wife for continuing to support my madness...and she still seems to love me....and a special "sorry" to her as well....for all the DVDs I buy and hide, then sneek into my collection....

80's-an Iron Maiden album is the holy grail. In all my years of thrift store/garage sale record hunting I've yet to come across one. People just don't let them go!

The most I spent in my collection was $600 for this guitar:

There was a guy who lived a few blocks away from me that had a prop from an IM concert-it was this HUGE gate with Eddie's arms and head at the top. Doesn't live there anymore-shoulda tooka pic.
