Hi guys, this totally bugged me the other day and I thought....'if anyone is gonna know the answer it's you'.
So...... I was watching VH1 classic the other day and they played Electric Dreams (phil oakey and the other bloke)...and the video was showing scenes from a film that I have never seen before.
So the question is....what film is it???

The song and the name of the film are the same. Electric Dreams (1984)w/Bud Cort and Virginia Madsen. Criminally not on DVD yet I think.

EA, It's well worth seeking out. I would love to replace my VHS with a DVD, but I don't know if they released it yet. A very cute, lost 80's classic. The soundtrack is great too.

It's on DVD on e-bay. I think it's only UK and Europe though. I am going to get it on VHS though.

I have this on DVD - I believe it's a vhs - dvd transfer.
And yes - it's a great movie. Very few actual stars, but a really great story, some brilliant music (the soundtrack is all from 80s british artists from the mid 80s that were signed to Virgin at the time, because it was a Virgin production!) and some brilliant performances.

I bought it on good old e-bay....I feel ashamed that I have never seen this obvious 80's classic.

Quite right too! Electric Dreams was the mid-eighties to me! Maybe you were too young when it came out ('84/'85)?

I've gotta admit, when I read that I laughed out loud! I understand that if you've only ever heard the song but not heard of the film you wouldn't make a connection, but still...
Now you need to ask the same question about 'The Neverending Story' and 'Footloose' and your journey to the dark side will be complete!

It had a legitimate release in the UK this year. The picture quality isn't too bad actually. No features - just the music vid.

Haha....I HAVE heard of those. I love the song Electric Dreams.....I honestly had no clue that there was a film by the same name, I had never even seen the music video before.
Now....The Pshychadelic furs did a song called pretty in pink, and I saw the music video the other day....there were scenes from a film with Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy...now...what is THAT?

Earth Angel, the other bloke who dueted with Phil Oakley on Together In Electric Dreams is Giorgio Moroder. And let us not forget, Lenny Von Dohlen was in the film, too, as Virginia's boyfriend.

Thanks LWC...I knew that, I just didn't know how to spell it off the top of my head. It woulda made me look like even more of an 80's dunce haha.

Now there's an interesting case of chicken/egg/chicken. With films like 'Footloose'/'Neverending Story'/'Electric Dreams'; the songs were all composed to accompany the film. However, in the case of 'Pretty in Pink', Hughes took the title of an already existing (but not very well known) song for his script. When the movie was made he asked the Furs to re-record it for the movie, which they did. Now, whenever anyone sees the video on Youtube or somewhere like that, it looks like the song was composed for the film, whereas, in reality, the film was composed to the song (in spirit I mean - not content).
Pop trivia for the kids: Giorgio Moroder who co-wrote 'Together in Electric Dreams' also co-wrote or wrote 'The Neverending Story' [Limahl], 'Call Me' [Blondie], Flashdance [Irene Cara] and 'Take My Breath Away' [Berlin]. He was quite the theme-king for a while!

By some twilight zone coincidence, I've heard that someone you once bought a Human League album for will also be watching this with you.....though his name escapes me xxx

It was a strange film. Not sure what Maxwell Caulfield was doing there? Also the lead guys acting was a tad questionable.
I liked it though, it is very dated and it is funny to see what the perception of computers were. Now....where to get an earth quake proof brick

I can't watch Lenny von Dohlen and not think of him as Harold Smith on Twin Peaks. Every quality that stands out as weird in Electric Dreams just clicks perfectly in a David Lynch production.
