STUPID QUESTION: Did Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita aleady know karate before this movie...or did they train for the film?

No, they were trained by Pat Johnson, the referee in the movie who also is a major KK sensei in real life...

Ok thanks....watching it the other night I assumed (probably because he's so old!) Pat Morita probably already knew it, and I suspected Ralp Macchio learned it for the film.
I saw parts of this movie many years ago and didnt think much of it...but I caught the whole thing a few nights ago and absolutely loved it, so go figure!

Pat Johnson is LEGEND!! He was one of the original folks who trained with Bruce Lee for a time, and even appeared in 'Enter The Dragon'(one of the bruisers who attack John Saxon's character on the golf course).
