Review
Disney came up with a lot of hits during the 80's, but this particular movie we're talking about is a classic gem that everyone should know about...
"The Great Mouse Detective" is one of Disney's most beloved animated movie classics, but sadly, also one of it's more under-appreciated ones.
"The Great Mouse Detective" (otherwise known as GMD) takes place in 1897, in the charming Mousetorian Age of London. Little Olivia Flaversham (the voice of Susanne Pollatschek) is celebrating her birthday with her toymaker father, Hiram (played by Alan Young). But their party is soon crashed by a creepy crippled bat, Fidget (played by Candy Candido) who kidnaps Olivia's father & disappears into the night. Olivia tries to go to Baker Street to find the famous detective Basil (voiced by Barrie Ingham), but gets lost on her way there. The kindly Dr. Dawson (Val Bettin), who has travelled from Afganistan to attend Queen Mousetoria's Diamond Jubilee (which is taking place the next evening) happens to find Olivia in an old boot, & he helps Olivia go to Basil's house. After a few minutes, we finally get to meet Basil, the coolest Disney mouse ever! (Besides Bernard & Mickey, that is.)
At first, Basil is working on an experiment & doesn't want to help Olivia. But when the little mouse mentions that her father was taken by Fidget, Basil realizes that this crime may be more than a kidnapping...
In fact, it may be a plot against the Crown itself, led by none other than Basil's Moriarty-type archnemesis, "the nefarious Professor Ratigan" (voiced by the late, great Vincent Price).
It's adventures & hi-jinks galore as Basil, Dawson, Olivia and a few friends (including the adorable puppy Toby) race against time to save Olivia's father, protect the Queen, & defeat Ratigan once & for all!
But will they truly save the day? Watch "The Great Mouse Detective" to find out!
Verdict
This movie is a shining example of how great animation was in the 80's.
You got your catchy tunes, your lovable characters like Basil & Ratigan (as well as Olivia!), your dazzling animation, your fast-paced storyline, & the thrilling score by Henry Mancini.
What more could you ask for in an animated movie?
