According to Fred Savage (when he appeared on Howie Mandel's talk show in 1998) the location they filmed the movie was in North Carolina in an abandoned ...and condemned warehouse!Fred mentioned the entire crew had on face masks because they felt the warehouse was toxic. However, the actors weren't wearing masks.
Fred and Howie often asked if it was safe to film there and the crew kept telling them "It's fine!"
