Just like the topic title says in your opinion what movie do you watch and instantly defines the 90's?
For me it would have to be Can't Hardly Wait, the 90's soundtrack alone is full of goodness i.e. Smash Mouth and Third Eye Blind. And JLH huge hair!

It's not hard to find a movie that defined the 60's or 80's, but I think it's harder for the 90's.
Movies that represent 90's fashion, aesthetic and pop-culture are for example Slacker (1991) by Richard Linklater Clerks (1994) by Kevin Smith Hackers (1995) by Iain Softley
Some movies which started trends or were part of trends: GoodFellas: probably the most influential 90's movie, along with Pulp Fiction. The quick, flashy editing style, the voice-over, the use of freeze-frame, dollies, jump-cuts, the pop-soundtrack... Reservoir Dogs / Pulp Fiction: violent crime movies with a lot of comic and cool dialogue (copycats: Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, Boondock Saints, 2 Days in the Valley etc.) The Usual Suspects, Se7en, The Sixth Sense, Wild Things: thriller with plot-twists. Scream: funny, self-reflexive teen-horror (copycats: I Know What You Did Last Summer, Halloween H20, The Faculty etc.) Toy Story because of the use of computers.
I think it's notable that clever dialogue was very important in 90's movies.

the 90's doesnt really have any definite characteristics, the early part of the decade was carry over from the 80's and the latter half just starting to form what is currently going on now
i guess you could say grunge style rock and independant films would sum up the decade. kinda seems terrible when put that way

Trainspotting didn't really defined the decade, but it did give an example of the tail-end of generation-X coming of age.. for better or worse. Too young to be a yuppie, too old to feel connected to the computer-generation.
It's very European though.. so people from the US may feel differently about it.. i don't know.
