This was a nice Australian teen flick shot in Melbourne.
Directed by Nadia Tass and starring Ben Mendelsohn, Claudia Karvan, Marshall Napier, Steve Bisley, Damon Herriman, Angelo D´Angelo, Tim Robertson and Maggie King. I remembered D´Angelo from BMX Bandits.
"Danny wants two things in life more than anything else, one is a Jaguar and the other is Joanna Johnson. After Danny's parents give him their beloved Nissan Cedric, Danny works up the courage to ask Joanna out on a date.... One problem! He tells her that he owns a Jaguar, and to prove otherwise, he trades in the Cedric for an early model Jag. At the car yard he is conned into believing he is getting the deal of the century by the salesman, Gordon "Farkas"." (IMDb)
Cool cast, some funny scenes, beautiful Karvan and good soundtrack.

Hey man,
Just watched this the other night. I did remember you creating this thread a few years back so I hoped it would still be here after the spam wars. The last time I saw it must have been in the early 90's. I remembered liking it then and still like it. Ben Mendelsohn has been in so many movies. Claudia Karvan is hot and it was good to see Angelo D'Angelo in this one too. Dunno what happened to him?
Great soundtrack. The two highlights being the songs you have mentioned. Mental As Anything and Boom Crash Opera are 2 great bands with many hits - especially Mental as Anything or as we call them here The Mentals.
Steve Bisley is also an iconic Aussie actor. You'd probably remember him playing Redback in Fast Talking.
Classic movie for those who have not seen it and yes, the soundtrack won't disappoint.

I was just reading up reviews on imdb for the big steal which were all really positive and a link brought me to this Australian film from 1997 which quite a few people seem to rave on about - the castle.
Bernie, atomik have you ever checked this one out before?
Never heard of The Castle before, warrior. I see that it´s Eric Bana´s feature film debut.

Never seen the castle myself but this DVD cover makes it look something like the Aussie soaps neighbours or home and away

I am not a huge fan od The Castle myself but I am hard to please. Regardless though, it is considered by many to be an Aussie Classic that is highly quotable. It's a very well known film here. Worth checking out guys.
aTomiK - another good one for Mendelsohn is Metal Skin. Aidan Young also plays a pretty good role.
Hey Warrior - wasn't Live it Up from Young Einstein? Or was it both? I dunno.

Never seen young eistein but it probably was both, definitely features in the original croc dundee,a great track!
I like the look of the big steal, definitely something I think I'd laugh at,I watched some Aussie shot crime drama the other week called - son of a gun with Ewan McGregor in and I thought it was really good, plus a new Zealand shot horror comedy called - housebound which was really fun.
Getting some really good movies from down under at the moment!
