Finally got to see this last night up on the big screen.

Mixed feelings, to be honest. I was expecting certain plot elements to be covered, and some of them weren't. I was expecting the end to prepare us for a further installment, and it didn't. But overall, I was expecting to be disappointed with the movie.... and I actually enjoyed it.

Didn't like Sam Rockwell as Zaphod. Did like Zooey whatever-her-name-is as Trillian. Loved the Vogon form-filling bits. Martin Freeman was ok (if a little assertive) as Arthur. Mos Def was ok - not zany enough, but ok. Warwick Davis and Alan Rickman as Marvin were nice - and it was good to see the old Marvin and the old Arthur make cameo apearances.

As I said - I went expecting to be let down, but was actually pleasantly surprised - certainly enough to get the DVD when it's released in a few weeks.

Any other HGG fans here?

I liked it but still prefer original TV series.

Martin Freeman assertive? from the previews it looked like he was going to rehash his character-tratis from 'The Office', this is a movie I'll have to catch on DVD. I always liked the book /series (though I have to admit, I was a bigger fan of 'Red Dwarf' than Hitchiker's, at the time, 'RD' was just a lot funnier).

Kash, the BBC series played Arthur Dent as he was written - generally bemused about life (the universe and everything) and is was only as the story progressed, and he saved the universe at Lords and remembered how to fly, that he began taking control of what was happening to him. Freeman's Arthur seems to be far more in control from the word go - I'd have preferred him to be a little more drippy.

Okay I haven't even read any of the posts on this topic because of the spoilers thing, just in case I see it some day. But, was this movie even worth it, it seemed like it was hyped pretty much and then it bombed.

Jessie, it's out on dvd next month - rent it and give it a go - all you could lose is an evening and a few bucks. And you may well come out ahead of the game if you like it....

I just watched the movie on dvd and really enjoyed it. I watched the tv series and read the books many many (and another many) years ago in early high school.

Paul, what scene had the original Marvin and Arthur cameo. I was keeping an eye out for them but honestly can't remember seeing them.

Stitch, if you watch the scene where they jump the queue to fill in the 'Presidential Authority For Release From Execution' forms, the original Marvin is in the queue....

And Simon Jones (Arthur from the tv series) is the hologrammatic face of the Magrathean that tries to warn them off before firing the missiles.
