"WALK PROUD is a gang movie that is reassuringly upbeat in an old-fashioned sort of way.
Based on an original screenplay by Evan Hunter, who wrote "The Blackboard Jungle," the granddaddy of all gang movies,
it stars Robby Benson, in dark face, as a member of an East Los Angeles Chicano gang who decides,
after much violence and with the help of a good young woman, to seek a better life." (NY Times)

This was a great gang movie/love story starring Robby Benson, Sarah Holcomb (Caddyshack),
Pepe Serna and the great late Trinidad Silva (Colors, The Night Before).
Robby Benson is fantastic here, he speaks so softly with his girlfriend
but acts real cool when he´s with his gang.

The story is very good and i liked the Venice L.A. locations.
I loved the ending and the end credits tune "Adios Yesterday" sung by Robby Benson.

Adios Yesterday-Theme song from 'Walk Proud'

Los Aztecas, Chicanos and Los Espiritos... Highly recommended!

I had the book Walk Proud way before I saw the movie. I thought it was kind of lame that in 1979 they would cast a white guy to play a latino in an LA movie! Other than that it was pretty solid. The book is better though. =)

I have not read the book nor seen the movie version, but I do recall reading articles about how some Hispanic-American groups were upset that Robby Benson was chosen to play a Latino in that movie!

Years later, there was a San Francisco radio host named Alex Bennett who would usually make fun of Robby Benson, by saying, "What race is he playing this time?" [Razz]
