Hi... Are there any movies made in or set in the 70s (either mainstream or low budget) which (any of all of the bellow)
a) are Sleazy, and include Heroin and cocaine use and shady characters?
b) include many of the clothes, hair (ie long haired men) and facial hair (beards, moustaches and long sideburns) of the time?
c) Have Rock music soundtracks.
D) Are tragedies.
The reason I ask is I was watching the film Forest gump, and the scenes with the character Jenny, intriqued me and I was hoping to find movies with a story similar to hers or which include sleazy characters like her or the guy she's getting high with.

Midnight Cowboy is one awesome movie IMO. A little weird in places but a true masterpiece if you ask me.
Probably been 25 years since I've seen Looking For Mr. Goodbar so really can't fairly comment on that one as my tastes have definitely changed.

Second, in answering your question, three movies from the early 1970's that fits all the categories that you mentioned are:
(1.) The 1970 movie, "Joe". Starring Peter Boyle, Dennis Patrick, and a then-unknown Susan Sarandon.
(2.) "Panic In Needle Park", starring Al Pacino.
(3.) "Dealing: Or The Berkeley-To-Boston Forty-Brick Lost-Bag Blues", starring Robert F. Lyons, Charles Durning, Barbara Hershey, and John Lithgow (his film debut). It's about a Harvard law student who runs a pot operation on the side.

And for images of bad '70s fashion (and other artifacts) you really need to check out this site with reproductions of old department store Christmas catalogs from the likes of Sears, JC Penney, Montgomery Ward, etc.
Try watching Billy Jack - it's filled with people that look like Gary Sinese in that pic. Taxi Driver has some characters with that look too, especially Harvey Kietel.

Try the early 70's Andy Warhol movies like Heat or Trash. Maybe Return to the Valley of the Dolls and Switchblade Sisters as well. The blaxploitation movies of Van Peebles and Pam Grier are another kettle of fish entirely, but if you want seedy then this might be interesting too.

This is a year 2000 movie set in the 70's. Might not be exactly what you are looking for since it evolves with a nice ending. It is about the rock scene and groupies back then. It has some great 70's fashion and a fantastic soundtrack with songs from bands such as Led Zeppelin, Chicago and others.
I agree about Midnight Cowboy. It is a great movie and was way ahead of its time. You can also find Midnight Cowboy and a few other 70's movies on that same site.
The Warriors is awesome!

The Warriors is one of the all time under rated classics!! I love it. It's such a great movie. I recomend it to anyone who loves original raw, and super cool movies.. 'CAN YOU DIG IT'!!!

I love Billy Jack. I've got it on Vhs. Was Gary Sinise in it? I can't remember,it's been a while since I watched it. I always thought Billy Jack was pretty good looking in a 1970's kind of way, but that his wife was butt ugly. But it's still a good movie. I know my friend and I watched the other Billy Jack movies that came out later too.
