I never knew until recently that Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell sang this song.
I remember back in the 70's Donny & Marie sang it on their variety show, and I loved their version of it.
Does anyone else remember it?
Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby Ain't nothing like the real thing Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby Ain't nothing like the real thing
I got your picture hangin' on the wall It can't see or come to me when I call your name I realize it's just a picture in a frame
I read your letters when you're not near But they don't move me And they don't groove me like when I hear Your sweet voice whispering in my ear
Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby Ain't nothing like the real thing
I play the game, a fantasy I pretend I'm not in reality I need the shelter of your arms to comfort me
No other sound is quite the same as your name No touch can do half as much to make me feel better So let's stay together
I got some memories to look back on And though they help me when you phone I'm well aware nothing can take the place of being there
So let me get the real thing So let me get the real thing Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby Ain't nothing like the real thing Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby Ain't nothing like the real thing

Didn't a company in the food industry use this song in a commercial?

I know Coke had a slogan and jingle "It's the real thing." and "Coke is it!" and Pepsi had "You've go the right one, baby." Didn't Ray Charles do the Pepsi one a few years back?

Yeah someone did use it in advertising...I do think it was Coke.
I loved Donny & Marie singing it though. I loved their variety show.
I was thinking about them doing the "Skating with Celebrities"...and Donny & Marie use to ice skate on their show all the time. It was actually really cool.
I miss those variety shows like that...where they did comedy and dancing and singing and ice skating all in one show, just to entertain people, there were no prizes and I have seen the out takes from those shows, where they worked so hard and were so tired, but they didn't complain about it, and they had alot of fun.

I remember being kinda creeped out about it. Considering that Donny & Marie are brother-sister, to have them singing that song sounds incestuous!
But the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell original is really "the real thing"!

Nothin like a little Mormon on Mormon action. They always creeped me out! It just seemed like they were always closer than your average brother and sister...

Devolution here,
Motley, you would be correct. "Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby" was a Burger King Commercial. I have the old commericals on tape.
