Do you guys remember the Kiss movie, I can't remember the name of it, I know it was on regular TV, and I remember watching it, in the 6th grade, and I loved it. Everyone loved Kiss, I still love them. Was the movie called Rock and Roll All Night, I remember it had something to do with a carnival, does anyone know if you can buy it anywhere????

I am not a KISS fan, and I never saw it, but it was called "KISS Meets The Phantom of the Dark", a TV-movie shown on the NBC-TV network in late October 1978, just a few days before Halloween! The villain was played by Anthony Zerbe, a longtime character actor who recently appeared in the last two "Matrix" movies.
It was filmed at the Six Flags/Magic Mountain amusement park in Valencia, Calif.

Actually it was called Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park I was a huge Kiss fan in the 70's and even I knew the movie was a stinker. But I forgave them and still love their music.

Thanks for the name of it..I bought it off Ebay...on DVD!!!! Thanks!

I bought it on eBay as well. Its a good cult classic kitschy movie, not without its charms. Even my little girl gets a kick out of it.(I think the title on mine is just KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM) another good KISS movie is DETROIT ROCK CITY
Posted by isis9968 (Member # 1780) on :
I got it, it was so awesome. I loved that they had super powers. The whole thing was very futuristic. The storyline was pretty cool, and the effects were neat. I liked that the doctor was creating cyber people out of the teens he kidnapped, and that he created doubles of Kiss. It was neat watching them do their superheros stuff- like jumping over the walls , and Gene breathing fire. I thought that was so awesome. I really don't remember it at all. The girl in it-Deborah Ryan was really pretty, does anyone know if she was in anything else???

I agree 100%!!!! I watched it not expecting anything special and there's a few parts that actually made me laugh out loud. The soundtrack is right up there with Dazed and Confusedas being my all time favorite soundtrack. Good rock 'n roll all around.
Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :
i comepletely agree sam. i wasn't expecting anything either, as i sat down to watch it. and i laughed my arse off. shortly afterwards, i bought the movie.
Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :
I finally got it on DVD as it was included on Kissology Vol.2. I thought it could have been better but had some fun monents, and was Ace Frehley's character's voice dubbed? Didn't sound at all like him.
Posted by KISSMAD (Member # 4412) on :
Ace voice was not dubbed but Peters voice was dubbed.
Posted by Chris the CandyFanMan (Member # 3197) on :
Although bizarrely, in a couple of scenes they appear to have an African-American actor filling in for Ace for whatever reason.
For those who haven't seen it, a review is posted at agonybooth.com, pointing out among other things that there's an international cut as well with noteable differences from the version released here in North America.

Here's a clip from VH-1's Where are they now.
I honestly like Gene Simmons with his make up on alot better.
They all look better with make up- and now they look better because you can't tell they have aged with the make up on.
Gene Simmons creeps me out in the video for Lick it Up- with the make up off.
Paul Stanley always had a very feminine look to him, and even his voice is very feminine.
I can't believe that they actually pulled off going 10 years with nobody knowing who they are. Or that someone didn't get a picture of them...all you would have had to do, is get them coming and going.
Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :
There was a lot of secrecy with protecting the identity of the Kiss members, a lot of the magazines knew what they looked liked without the makeup, but business was too good that it was agreed to keep it quiet. Nowadays, they would have never gotten away with it.
I think Gene was in some 80's movies, always thought he would have made a perfect Devil/Lucifer with horns and red makeup.
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :
Gene sure knows how to play a bad guy. I think he is awesome villain in
Runaway (1984)
and in Wanted: Dead or Alive (1987)
Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :
He's in Trick or Treat too.
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :
Yeah, he´s cool in that one also.

Simmons was also in Red Surf, 1989 and The New Guy, 2002.
Posted by KISSMAD (Member # 4412) on :
And he also has his own reality TV series called Gene Simmons Family Jewels.
Posted by Sammy Reign In Blood Hain (Member # 3150) on :
I used to like KISS quite a bit but I have a hard time listening to any of their music because Gene Simmons sold that band out way too much. Plus I feel Simmons is a big pompous a$$.
Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :
You can never mess with the original lineup, I was lucky enough to see them back together in 96. Simmons/Stanley were always the businessmen and Frehley/Criss were the better musicians IMO. I can really agree with Kiss being too corporate over the years, but as for filling fans needs, those Kissvision Vol.1-3 were a stroke of marketing genius I wish more bands were capable of putting out.
Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :
My son said that the 2 new members of KISS were kicked out for doing drugs.
He said they NEVER did drugs. Which I never knew that, but that's pretty cool.
It seemed the only "addiction" Gene Simmons had was to women.

I have to correct you on this. They are called Kissology vol. 1-3 not Kissvision. Kissvision DVDs are bootlegs.

So who is currently in Kiss besides Gene and Paul? I can't keep track now. All I know is they haven't had new material since Psycho Circus which was like 12 years ago.

I was just checking out all the old KISS videos from the '80s that I used to watch. I liked Lick It Up, Crazy Crazy Nights, Reason to Live and really anything KISS has done besides the slower ballad types.
Posted by Sammy Reign In Blood Hain (Member # 3150) on :
I didn't care too much for Kiss in the 80's with the exception of the "Creatures of the Night Album" and a few songs here and there. Overall I thought their 80's stuff failed in comparison to their 70's material.
Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :
I feel the same way, I like a few songs off the Elder and the Creatures album, but not a huge fan of the rest of the decade. Ace Frehley will always be my favorite Kiss guitarist. I was watching some of the later 80's Kiss concerts on the 2nd volume DVD and there's too much shred and **** in the guitar playing. Plus they look so much better in makeup.
Posted by Sammy Reign In Blood Hain (Member # 3150) on :
They tried too hard to be a hair metal band and failed IMHO.
Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :
I think a lot older bands tried to stay current putting power ballads in their repetoire( Heart, Cheap Trick), Kiss's Forever, trying to stay trendy. I did like two songs off Revenge, Unholy and Domino. Thought a heavier, bluesier feel was a better alternative than something like Crazy Nights. All through the Kiss catalog, I have never been a fan of Paul Stanley sung songs. He just kind of irks me, "it's gonnah be oneofthosehoteth naghts, everybodee!" People like James Brown can get away with it, but not him.
Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :
I'm one of the few that likes both 70's and 80's Kiss, I guess. I even like the ballads by Kiss alot too.

Hey, it's just comparing Kiss of the 70's to the one of the mid 80's and 90's is like comparing apples to oranges. Paul is a great showman, great interview, don't get me wrong, I just prefer Gene's tougher style. Kiss are actually coming here July 13th, and I will be getting tickets when they go on sale this Saturday. Nobody puts on a live show like Kiss.

I've been to the Sydney convention back in 1995. It cost $105 for 12 hours of Kiss.
Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :
Ouch that's a tidy sum. Was it worth it? Gene's mercahdise vision knows no bounds, I remember when he was actually hawking Kiss coffins a while back.

It was worth every cent. It was the first time I saw Kiss live. First the Q&A then the unplugged set. The next night I went to my first Kiss concert. It's the best Kiss concert I've been to.
The Kiss merchandise is way out of hand but as long as they wear the makeup, there will be merchandise.

Kiss are playing the UK in 2010....I am sooooooooo excited it's ridiculous. Me and my number one rock guru Mr Duck are going to be in attendance....he is a rock yoda...but taller, less green and not made of any geological material.
Posted by logan5 (Member # 1467) on :
Oddly, Kiss were incredibly uncool in the UK during the 70's and 80's. It's only since the whole retro thing happened that we seem to buy into them. We can view them as a piece of American kitsch. I saw a teenage girl wearing a 'Kiss' t-shirt that had the distinctive band name logo recently, and found myself wondering if she'd ever really listened to them, or if she just liked the design.
I was a Kiss fan in the 80's and 90's. That was a lonely existence I can tell you.
Angel: Don't you go running off with Mr. Gene Simmons. You'll have the Duck standing outside your window with a boombox playing 'Love Gun'.

I think you might be out of luck. Isn't Mr. Stanley a little... *ahem*... 'light in the loafer'?
quote:I had a 19 year old say to me the other day that the first time she saw me she thought my Kiss t-shirt was really cool.
See. I become yet more convinced that the whole modern Kiss thing (in the UK) is based on the logo and not on the music. What shirt was it?
On a similar note: I recently noticed that 'Atticus' clothing in the UK have stolen the 'Phantom of the Paradise' dead bird logo. I shall have to retire my 'Death Records' t-shirt *SOB*!
quote:Let the Kiss resurgence commence.
"Re-surgence"? Surely for the UK it's simply a 'surgence'... if there is such a thing!

Zeppelin, Purple & Queen were the 70 bands that were incredibly popular, especially Queen.
I think Kiss would be classified as a cult band, like Rush.

Posted by J2ME (Member # 5728) on :
I was wrong to call either Rush or Kiss 'cult' bands. They are slightly bigger than that.
Rush have been around for over 40 years. The biggest crowds they've ever played to were in Brazil(40,000+, 60,000) They have never come close to playing to that sort of a crowd over here. 2 nights at Wembley Arena doesn't cut it.
Kiss at the moment are playing 2 nights @ Wembley Arena. It only holds 10,000 ppl, I'm sure it's going to be sold out. They still couldn't fill a Stadium. *
I should say at this point that I'm a huge fan of Rush. I really wish they could fill Wembley Stadium or Old Trafford, cos their music deserves to be heard by a lot more people. I can't stand Kiss.
* Famous last words?!?
Anyway Earth Angel, I'm sure you're going to have a great night.

Madness has taken hold. Keep it that way!
They had a very small fanbase, and no mainstream popularity whatsoever. You have to remember that when Kiss came over here Punk had just happened; they were seen as the height of tacky American sweaty rock. Glam happened in the UK in the early 70's, and Kiss were seen as tacky and behind the times!
Their first taste of mainstream success came with 'Crazy Nights' in the late 80's when they tried to sound like Bon Jovi.
The British music scene in the late 70's and early 80's was incredibly dynamic and vibrant. If you said you were a Kiss fan then, you were seen as having very bad taste indeed (it was a very anti-corporate American time). That only really changed in the 90's when 70's retro was in, and people began to take an interest in a phenomenon that had never really happened here in the first place. Because the Kiss logo and merchandising is so prevalent now, people think they were popular back then. They were, but not in the UK.
They will sell out, and people will have a blast. That's because they're more popular now than ever!
You wanted the best Ms. Angel... you'll get the best!
quote:I don't remember Kiss being that popular over here. None of my friends were into them, and I can't remember people talking about them in school.
You wouldn't. Despite a huge marketing push, they never broke into the national conciousness. Even bands like Zeppelin and Pink Floyd were seen as dinosaurs in the late 70's (despite retaining huge followings) Kiss seemed really tacky.
quote:Zeppelin, Purple & Queen were the 70 bands that were incredibly popular, especially Queen.
I think Kiss would be classified as a cult band, like Rush.
In the US and Aus, Kiss were huge. They lost a huge amount of their popularity in the States when the 70's clicked over into the 80's (like the Bee Gees) and albums like 'Music From the Elder' didn't help. They spent most of the 80's trying to rebuild their popularity (they always retained a medium-sized following, and they did ok). By carrying on until the 90's they kind of passed though the storm, and like Alice Cooper they got back some cred just by carrying on ( a lot of acts like 'Guns & Roses' and 'Motley Crue' cited them as influences).
quote:Yeah....but even rush were sold out when they last played and the Duck told me that there were lotsa younguns there enjoying them. People liked Kiss damnit...they DID. haha
Old music is more accessible than ever thanks to the net. Younger people can sample bands in a way they never could in the past. Years ago (you remember!) if you wanted to hear old music you either had to fork out a tenner for a CD/Album, or you had to go to second hand record stores and buy them (most kids never did that). Now people can hear the music almost for free, and if they like it they can go and see the act (which is where they spend their money). The live music scene was almost dead in the 90's thanks to rave and dance, but now because of the internet it's alive again! Touring bands benefit from that a lot.
As for Rush vs Kiss: Rush were more consistently popular than Kiss over here. I believe 'Spirit of Radio' was quite a big single. They were seen as a live/album band with progressive leanings, so they maintained a good following. Kiss were seen much more as a gimmicky act so they struggled with consistency.
For those that care, here's a nice little list of acts who were big in America, but meant almost nothing over here... get ready for a shock...
Kiss Journey Rick Springfield The Motels Quarterflash The Fixx
Ok, maybe Quarterflash wasn't a shock, but still.
I say all of the above as a Kiss fan who liked them *before* they became retro. Which wasn't helped by liking the other acts on the list, too! Not quite a social pariah, but I was always prepared for some blank stares when I named them. But that's ok, they were the same people that bought *albums* by 'S-Express' and 'Black Box' without realising they were novelty acts in disguise.
quote:Kiss at the moment are playing 2 nights @ Wembley Arena. It only holds 10,000 ppl, I'm sure it's going to be sold out. They still couldn't fill a Stadium. *
Not bad going though!

"YOU PULL THE TRIGGER ON MY... LOOOOOOVE GUUUUUUUN!"
The entire street is now awake.
Will she rock and roll over, or will it be hotter than hell?!

Pretty much just like when Jethro Tull beat out Metallica for best Heavy Metal Album at the Grammy's
Posted by logan5 (Member # 1467) on :
Kiss really really should already be in there. They had a huge impact in the late 70's.
However, they also made some somewhat... 'trashy' music, which, while audiences love it, critics are much more disdainful of. Could that be why they aren't already there?
Tull plays a mean flute. I think even Metallica would agree that Tull are far far heavier than them
