Thought this might be a helpful thread for those movies we are on the edge of whether we want to spend the time watching them or not.
National Lampoons Class Reunion. Should I watch this?
Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :
If you truly want to see how bad it is then I would recommend it. This movie was written by John Hughes but it was one of his earlier works. It was a major flop and for good reason. It's like a really bad comedy/horror meets Scooby Doo. In my opinion it's terrible. I first watched it when I was 10 and thought it was bad then and actually watched it recently to give it another go. It was just as bad as I remembered it.
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :
Itīs not THAT bad. While not a classic by any means i found it quite fun film. Stephen Furst rocks!
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
I agree with atomik,it's certainly not lampoon's animal house classic but its also nowhere near as bad as its reputation would have you believe, for starters it's got a great setting and there's a few good laughs here and there!
I'd say yeah definitely give it a go.
This review of it below on imdb made me laugh, the guy comparing it to police academy 7 - mission to moscow - no way,It's definitely not that bad I think that might be pushing it a bit!
Imdb review
One of the worst movies I have ever seen! 2/10
Author: steve layne

This movie is about as underrated as Police Acadmey Mission to Moscow. This movie is never funny. It's maybe the worst comedy spoof ever made. Very boring, and dumb beyond belief. For those people that think this movie is underrated god help you. I give this movie * out of ****

How about the 1986 atomic bomb thriller - the Manhattan project starring the excellent John lithgow. Worth a watch anyone?
Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :
I stand by my opinion of Class Reunion. I do think it's terrible. I would certainly not give it more than 2/10. Hmmm, never heard of The Manhattan Project. I like Lithgow though.
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :
The Manhattan Project is not a perfect thriller but it oozes 80s feel. Christopher Colletīs character is badly written because heīs super annoying and heīs supposed to be the hero? However if you like 80s sci-fi related films and John Lithgow (who doesnīt, Nixonīs good too) i would say, give it a go!
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
Personally I love Manhattan Project, but the flaws that Atomik mentions are very much there. Collet comes off as more of an arrogant jock than a science geek and there are plotholes you can drop a nuke through here and there. But the 80's feel is there, I like the score and the whole plutonium heist sequence, however far fetched, is a joy to watch. If you're not too picky, I would give it a whirl.
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
Despite my distaste for George Newbern, the trailer for this piqued my interest. Any thoughts by those who have seen it?
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :
Itīs a decent teen fantasy. Kimberly Foster is superhot and i found it cool that itīs shot in Texas area. I own the finnish vhs tape:
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
Well, "decent" is hardly a glowing recommendation, but I guess I can put it on the list.
Did a google image search on Kimberly Foster.... she definitely helps the movies' chances.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Peter I watched - it takes two for the first time a little while back and overall i quite enjoyed it,it's not as much fun as the directors david beaird's earlier t&a comedy - the party animal but obviously it's quite different in tone (thats an r rated sex comedy this more a pg 13 comedy romance) from that film.
Nice write-up, Warrior. You would have sold me on it, had it not been for the limited availability.... damn it. It's kind of hard to fathom how regular mainstream Hollywood films, albeit 30 years old, are still largely unavailable in 2015.
Also, I watched Dragnet the other week, what does Kim Foster play? Bait Mate perhaps?
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Yeah peter there's loads of films that haven't see the light of day yet on DVD,a lot of these distributors seem to be content with reissuing the same old films over and over again but just dressing them up differently with say different packaging, perhaps a few more extras it's all pretty lame to tell the truth?
I had to watch - it takes two on YouTube which is not the best scenario but the fact it wasn't a bad copy made it a bit more bearable.
Dragnet's pretty good fun,not seen it in a while though, talking of - the manhattan project here's another espionage type thriller I've never seen -
Japanese vhs cover for cloak and dagger(1984).
1984's - cloak and dagger Starring e.t's Henry Thomas and dabney Coleman this actually looks pretty good fun!
Worth hunting down?

I think that Cloak and Dagger is a miss. It had its moments--and I'm going on recollection from decades ago when it came out--but it didn't really gell (Pun intended, Mr. Mood Rock '76. Great handle!). Dabney Coleman is excellent, and I know a lot of folks do seem to like it, so maybe it's me.

In your own time, Atomik. But will very much appreciate your thoughts on it once you've seen it.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
I've always quite enjoyed - target peter,I don't think you can ever go far wrong with the terrific gene Hackman plus I've always liked matt Dillon as well which is a plus and while it might not be held in the same regard as director arthur Penn's earlier works I still think its a lot of fun!
Here's a little write up I done for it a little while back along with ridley Scott's excellent - black rain.
quote:Originally posted by the young warrior:
watched ridley scott's 1989 thriller black rain starring michael douglas, andy garcia, kate kapshaw and the late Ken Takakura (mr baseball) who sadly passed away last year.
a really cool east meets west thriller with a pretty wicked hans zimmer score and some superb location shooting in osaka, japan.
picked this up on blu ray for quite a reasonable price actually and must say it looks rather good on blu (loads of neon, very stylishly shot) and it also sounds none to bad either despite having no hd audio track.
i must say i really liked black rain and i've watched it a few times now and for me it's a movie that just keeps getting better and better!
great movie and highly recommended.
also picked up a very cheap used like new copy of arthur penn's 1985 thriller - target starring gene hackman and matt dillon,i've always quite enjoyed this one,i like the european settings (paris,hamburg-germany)plus hackman is terrific as ever and despite a bit of criticism i thought matt dillon was pretty good also.
peugot 205 gti these were quite nippy back in the day!
some none to bad action scenes which include a few decent car chases one including an old peugot 205 gti which is not something you see eveyday.
it does have a few flaws throughout like the scene where matt dillon changes his mind last minute on an air flight,he's meant to be be travelling to frankfurt but spots a pretty brunette that he keeps bumping into who happens to be flying to berlin so he then goes upto to the the guy at the ticket office and says i changed my mind and then just walks past him to get onto the plane.
yeah i'd say overall it's a pretty decent thriller and considering the very mixed reviews and fair share of criticism it has picked up over the years i'd say it is pretty underrated 80s thriller.
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
Thanks for your take on it, warrior. And yes, you rarely go wrong with Hackman.... well he was in Superman 4 But as a rule of thumb, you're right.

regarded by many as being a Christmas classic is porky's director bob Clark's - a Christmas story from 1983,this is one that I've heard countless good things about over the years but sadly have never got around to watching!
With a rather swanky looking new steelbook blu ray just released and with Christmas (perfect time to watch it) being just around the corner I must say I've been pretty tempted in picking up a copy.
what do you guys think - a Christmas classic or a Christmas Turkey?
Got to say I still prefer the original artwork!

I remember seeing Crackers in the late 90s. As I recall it wasn't very good.
How about Snake Eater with Lorenzo Lamas? The review on IMDB slammed it so I assume it sucks. I have the original VHS tape but still have not got around to watching it.

A Christmas Story is loved by everyone I know- except me! I absolutely hate that movie. I don't know why, I can't put my finger on it, but I just can't watch it! It is on every year for a 24 hour rotation on the USA channel on Dec. 24th, Christmas Eve. How many times does one need to watch this pile of crap?!
Posted by TerdNthePoolGGB (Member # 9818) on :
lol Pittsburghgirl. I agree, it has been overplayed and I have a hard time watching it anymore but it was a classic movie from the 80s IMO. If you haven't seen it, I recommend giving it go. Sorry Pittsburghgirl.
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :
Own Crackers on vhs and dvd but havenīt watched that one yet.
Iīm a big Lorenzo Lamas fan and watched over ten Lamas films while the site was down. Snake Eater is tongue in cheek fun and violent action film. The third part Snake Eater III: ...His Law (1992) is also excellent but avoid the second, Snake Eater II: The Drug Buster (1989).
Someone just ruined Jack "Soldier" Kellyīs sacred beer moment and is gonna get hurt!

Terd, I watched A Christmas Story once, a few years ago, only because of others' recommendations. I didn't like it at all. I seriously like Christmas movies, and I even make it a point to watch som Hallmark Hall of Fame movies, but I just didn't like Christmas Story.

Cheers aTomiK. I have not had the VCR set up since I got cable a few months back. I might dust it off tonight to watch some of my recently purchased VHS.
Now please don't give any plot points away on this one but I just picked up Dressed to Kill (1980) with Michael Caine & Angie ****inson. This was directed by Brian De Palma so I am reasonably hopeful on this one. It's got an 83% score on the Tomatometer. The cover looks pretty beat up so I hope the tape is OK.
Please no spoilers but just a thumbs up if you think its worth a watch.
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :
Dressed to kill should be a treat. I recall seeing it back in the 80s but donīt remember anything. Perhaps a Brian De Palma marathon after the Burt Reynolds one which by the way starts tomorrow..
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
Dressed to Kill is great, a giallo type slasher with De Palma's usual nods to Hitchcock and the likes. Body Double is my fave of his, but this comes very close.
Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :
Yeah, I just watched it. The tape was in pretty good nick considering it was an original VHS ex-rental and 35 years old.
It was a pretty decent movie. Not as good as I hoped it might be. I thought the movie would go in a different direction than it did. It was very good but I think it could have been better. Definitely worth watching though and glad I picked it up because I was in two minds about whether to get it or not.
Yeah, I think it was about on par with Body Double. Good to see Keith Gordon in this one too.
Thanks for the replies guys.

A couple more here that I have never seen before which are currently added to my watchlist both from the 80s,first we have -
The 1988 comedy - moon over parador starring Richard dreyfuss,Sonia Braga and the late great Raul julia and then there is -
The 1981 Oliver stone horror - the hand starring Michael Caine which I've been wanting to watch for ages but have never got around to.

I always enjoyed Crackers, but it's an 80's movie that really isn't an '80's' movie - it's a 70's movie released in the 80's. If you go into it expecting something low-key and not expecting to laugh too much it's enjoyable.

It's not like other Christmas movies, which is why it stands out so much. It's more a movie about childhood and nostalgia. I remember when it was one of those movies nobody had ever heard of. It didn't do much when it first came out. I think if it hadn't become massively hyped retrospectively and you'd stumbled on it on TV or something, you may well have liked it.
quote:The 1988 comedy - moon over parador starring Richard dreyfuss,Sonia Braga and the late great Raul julia
Silly but fun movie. Drefuss was on fire in the late 80's. He'd got his mojo back after kicking the drugs. His 'comeback' was 'Down and out in Beverly Hills' in '86, and from there he made a batch of enjoyable movies; this one; Let It Ride (a GREAT movie that needs viewing more than once); What About Bob (big at the time and a lot of fun - now largely forgotten); Tin Men (fun); Stakeout (fun).

I loved this film, I am a weirdo Author: skex123 from Canada 14 October 2005

Absolutely the single worst film in Gene Hackman's brilliant career. It's a disaster. Dan Aykroyd, perhaps the greatest sketch comedian of his generation, never found many movie roles that could sustain his style of humor for the length of a feature film. This is not one. He's trying so hard that he even does a Roadrunner impression. But it's all a dreadful waste of good talent.

The sitcom-y elements are fairly obvious, and it's all pretty silly, but Aykroyd manages to save a lot of the material. His Dr. Detroit accent is priceless.

That's what is so telling about B-movies from the 80's and 90's compared to the same from the 00's and onwards. The odds that you'll enjoy some genre trash from the 80's and 90's are roughly 75-25. After that... almost 0-100.

Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
ATomIK, Wise Guys, while second-tier DePalma, is very underrated. It has some hilarious stuff in it--former wrestler Captain Lou Albano is great--and DePalma never lets the pace drag. I like it a lot. If you are going to do a DePalma marathon, and you haven't seen his early comedies like Greetings and Hi Mom, you must. I read an old review from way back when--it might have been written by Vincent Canby of the New York Times--that said one day DePalma was going to direct a great comedy. Well, we all know that he took a different career path, but he always handles humor very well even in his super serious thrillers, like all the wonderful, funny lines Dennis Franz has in Dressed to Kill.
Also, having seen everything DePalma has directed, I went back and watched Get to Know Your Rabbit, his forgotten first studio film starring Tommy Smothers. I had only seen it once before, some 40 years ago, and didn't particularly like it. DePalma, the studio, and Smothers didn't get along, so DePalma got fired off of it. It was shelved for a long time. Upon rewatching it recently, I was pretty impressed. Yeah, you can tell that it was a troubled production, but some scenes are truly hilarious. And you can see DePalma already was a master craftsman early in his career. It's definitely worth a look too.

Anyone ever checked this one out and if so is it any good?
Also made in the same year as - Lisa (1990)
The comedy - ski school starring dean Cameron.
Anyone know if it's good for a laugh?

This thread is just what I was looking for. Should I watch these movies?: Used Cars, Quicksilver, The Pick-Up Artist. None of them have more than two and a half stars, but who knows.
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :
I really like Used Cars. Itīs one of the best comedies of all time IMO. Huge cast and so many fun jokes. It has that early 80s politically incorrect feel that i love.
We talked about Quicksilver a while ago, i like the film. Maybe not very strong storywise but you gotta love all the familiar faces and the upbeat soundtrack.
Some people donīt like The Pick-up Artist at all but i do. I think that itīs nice romantic comedy with a strong cast but keep in mind that iīm a BIG fan of both Ringwald and Downey Jr.

Need to check out - quicksilver again but - used cars is an absolute blast,I think its really good fun,I too also like - the pick up artist and definitely think it's a lot better than its reputation would have you believe!

Darnit. USED CARS was on the other day. I shoulda watched it.
How about LABYRINTH? Its playing on the big screen at the local theatre Thursday for Retro Night. If yes, does it need to be seen in the theatre or is a TV viewing sufficient? Thanx in advance for any input

Depends how much of a fan you are. Me personally, I probably won't be seeing the theatre re-release because I already own on DVD and due to multiple viewings, it's pretty much become just an O.K. movie to me now. So I say home viewing is good enough.

I actually haven't seen Used Cars, so I'll have to check it out...I have a copy on DVD...just never got around to it.
Coincidently, very recently just watched Quicksilver (Love) and The Pick Up Artist (Like).
I'm not sure about Labyrinth...vague childhood memories....thinking the magic might be gone for me on this one...but may check it out again someday....

Anyone know if - project x with Matthew Broderick and Helen hunt is worth checking out?
Posted by Devolution (Member # 1731) on :
Devolution here,
Project X is a good movie. It was an HBO staple in the late 80's, it's animal/political. If you don't like animal abuse, don't watch this movie. It's not Planet of the Apes bad, but it's just a bit tough.
We are DEVO
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
I second the motion on Project X, definitely a forgotten but entertaining 80s film and HBO staple. Broderick is his usual likeable self, and he and Helen Hunt have some nice chemistry. And how can you not like apes? While it's a breezy entertainment, it does make some effective points about animal testing and abuse. High marks for that.

Cheers devo, crash,it sounds pretty great I'll wait till the blu ray drops a little bit more in price and pick it up,Broderick was always fun to watch during the 80s!

A really good coming of age movie set at a summer camp that walks a fine line between being gritty and honest and being a fluffy fun movie. The soundtrack was great, and probably one of the reasons it's never had a legit DVD release in the US.

I agree on Little Darlings. Is it out on DVD? I have sold a couple of these on VHS for $30 each in the past. Still have one on the shelf. I think a die hard 80s movie fan would enjoy it even though it just squeeked into the decade. I think the song at the end is one of the best at the end of a movie and it includes one of my favorite endings which is a frozen shot with a great song. those are always very emotional to a terd like me. let us know what you think Warrior.

Any of you ever watched this 1985 horror drama -
The Doctor And The Devil's Starring Timothy Dalton,Jonathan Pryce,Julian Sands and Twiggy,it came out on blu ray not long back and I was wondering if it is worth checking out?
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
So-so. It has a great cast and fantastic credits. (How many movies can boast Produced by Mel Brooks, Based on an Original Screenplay by Dylan Thomas? LOL) And director Freddie Francis is certainly in his ghoulish element. Mel Brooks was clearly shooting for a repeat of The Elephant Man with an elegant British period piece. It looks good, but it didn't catch fire for me. I don't know. It probably deserves another look.

Which one of these 80's movies should I watch tonight? They are on YouTube. My hubby has gone fishing and I know he will be tired when he comes home and end up falling asleep on the couch, so this evening will be all mine. Making the Grade Crazy Moon Watchers Oddballs Volunteers There are a lot of movies on that channel on YouTube, but a lot aren't available in the U.S.
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :

Making the Grade is a classic comedy and the best of the bunch.Ļ Watchers is a pretty decent thriller and i would recommend Volunteers if you like to see Hanks and Candy fooling around in a jungle (not THAT way but you know what i mean ). Oddballs is a low-budget crazy comedy with a very young cast but somehow i enjoyed it.

I have to say I never liked Making the Grade at all. I feel like I should, but whenever I watch it I just can't bring myself to like it. Crazy Moon is a lovely little romantic comedy. Oddballs is a Canadian camp movie mess that for a brief period as a kid was actually my favourite movie (!) It really really is silly though. Volunteers is a pretty good movie from when Tom Hanks was primarily a comedic actor. I believe he met his wife (the lead actress) on this. Not great, but well worth watching for Hanks, Candy and the ever reliable Tim Thomerson.

I always thought it should have nudity as there were tons of attractive women in it, and it has a 'frat' feel. But it's like the movie is being targeted at kids so they just didn't do it.

I like Brainstorm quite a bit, but as Crash said it isn't perfect as they completed the movie 'around' Natalie Woods tragic death (did he? Didn't he?) As a result they worked with what they had, and while the film is more flawed for it, it's still worth watching.

Since there was some discussion about Theresa Russell in the 70's Movie thread, it reminded me of this one :
Insignificance (1985)
This came out right in the middle of our favorite decade, has a terrific cast (including Theresa Russell), a bizarre story, and is directed by the great Nicolas Roeg..
I have seen it and think that it's excellent. It's based on a stage play, but director Nic Roeg uses his usual fractured editing techniques to make it really interesting. All the performers are fantastic, including Tony Curtis and Gary Busey.

I am with Logan. Eyewitness is a good, though flawed, film. It's best asset is the heartfelt performance by William Hurt, who was on a roll at the beginning of his career with Body Heat, Altered States, and this film.
Posted by Logan 5 (Member # 1467) on :
I was about to mention William Hurt. Early to mid period Hurt was really good, and it's easy to see why he became a top tier actor (and then it went to his head). Sigourney is also worth watching in anything, and this was during her most interesting period (to me at least).
Hurt seemed to get bigger as the decade progressed and arguably peaked with things like 'Accidental Tourist' and 'Children of a Lesser God', but seemed to slide in the 90's. I always think of Debra Winger too, as an 80's actress who was massive for a while and then slid into obscurity. I watched 'Mike's Murder' again recently, and although the film was a mess (studio interference) her performance was really strong.
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
I agree with you about William Hurt. I would add that I really liked his performances in Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Big Chill, Broadcast News, and The Doctor too in his peak period. After that, it just seemed to be a series of terrible script choices as he headed into middle age. He did resurface with that great colorful scene in A History of Violence, but he never really made a comeback. I think that it was a couple of things. When he first started, he was like a bright flash, a quirky, not-totally-handsome but not-unattractive, intelligent leading man for the 80s. After a series of really terrific, gutsy, no-holds-barred performcnes, he got spoiled/arrogant/lazy. And then, I think, that as time went on--and he gave the exact same line readings and performance in every role--people just gave up and forgot about William Hurt, the once top-tier Oscar-winning star. I also read back in the day that alcohol and, perhaps, some craziness crept in. (As I recall, I read somewhere that when he was married to his ex-wife, Mary Beth, he once threw himself down on the sidewalk in front of her and rolled around shouting, "You are trying to control my Id!" LOL) It's a real shame. He is a very talented guy when he wants to be.
As for Debra Winger, another performer that I really like, it's a lot of the same thing. She wasn't the most attractive actress of her generation--not that she was ugly--but she could be really sexy when she needed to. (She's fantastic in An Officer and A Gentleman.) And it's worse for an actress heading into middle age. Unless you are Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, or Helen Mirren, the parts just aren't there. Heck, Glenn Close and Jessica Lange wound up on TV shows.

A couple here that I'm curious about -
Anyone seen the 1994 action comedy The Cowboy Way starring Woody Harrelson and Kiefer Sutherland and if so is it any good?
And from the previous year -
The 1993 fantasy comedy Heart And Souls Starring Robert Downey Jr,Elisabeth Shue and Charles Grodin.
Worth checking out?
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
The Cowboy Way is neither poingnant or significant in any way, but I've always enjoyed it as a disposable action comedy. Woody Harrelson is pretty damn funny here and has decent chemistry with Sutherland.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Cheers Peter,i like both actors so I imagined it wouldn't be too bad a watch!
Posted by Logan 5 (Member # 1467) on :
Totally agree with Peter's summation of Cowboy Way - entertaining but nothing special.
Heart and Souls was also passably entertaining with a good cast and some good scenes, but it didn't work that well as a film. If I recall correctly it was very didactic and sentimental. I've seen it twice and it hasn't stuck with me at all.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Cheers Logan for your take on them,i've had them in my Amazon basket for ages and they've just recently dropped in price so I'm tempted to pick them up!
I'm not a bond fanatic but I did enjoy quite a few of his 80s outings especially the last one I watched The Living Daylights,i've only got two left from that decade to view and that is -
and Never Say Never Again,i noticed that Octopussy at the moment is really cheap on Blu and is just over 4 Uk pounds for a New & sealed copy.
Is it any good?
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
Octopussy is one of the better Roger Moore Bonds, and Never Say Never Again is pretty underrated. It was nice to see Connery back, and Klaus Maria Brandauer, a truly great actor, is an excellent Bond villain.
Posted by TerdNthePoolGGB (Member # 9818) on :
I love the Moore Bond movies. Octopussy isn't his best but my advice would be go for it Warrior. Both are worth a watch.
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
I would rank Octopussy in the low end of Bonds, not as bad as A View to a Kill, but still, Moore should have quit after For Your Eyes Only IMO.
Never Say Never Again is a fun anomaly, some parts horrible, some parts watchable.... and a few parts that actually works. But flawed as it is, it is still Bond (sort of) and 80's Bond at that, which makes it a must-see in my book.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Cheers guys,i went for it and just purchased Octopussy, only Never Say Never Again from 80s Bond to check out after that!
Posted by Logan 5 (Member # 1467) on :
Look at the length of Moore's legs in that poster! Totally unreal!
I like Octopussy, but Moore was getting too old to be Bond at that point. He wanted to stop after For Your Eyes Only but they talked him back. They did it again for View to a Kill, which he was far too old for.
Never Say Never Again is actually quite good, but it's not an 'official' Bond film. Connery owned the rights to Thunderball, so he remade it. I believe the two movies almost went head-to-head back in '83. I like it, and Connery is clearly having a blast.
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
Kevin McClory owned the rights to Thunderball, not Connery... and this was his baby.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
How would you guys rate Timothy Dalton in his two outings as Bond?
I really liked The Living Daylight's but wasn't so overstruck with a Licence To Kill but thought Timothy Dalton was pretty decent both times!
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :
I like both Dalton films very much. I think that every Connery and Moore Bond films are worth getting but i should rewatch them to give better reviews.
I also recommend the sole Lazenby movie On Her Majestys Secret Service.
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
I thought that Timothy Dalton was badly underrated as Bond. He certainly had his moments. I like The Living Daylights a lot--I think that it is one of the best post-Connery Bonds--but Licence to Kill not so much. Of all the Bonds, I thought that it had the cheapest, crummiest look to it, and while Robert Davi is a fine actor, they didn't give him much to do as the sort of ordinary villain.
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
Dalton is my favorite Bond, then Lazenby, then Connery, then Moore, then Brosnan... and then Craig, though I don't care much for him and his run of films.
Posted by Logan 5 (Member # 1467) on :
quote:Kevin McClory owned the rights to Thunderball, not Connery... and this was his baby.
Ah, I'd heard Connery. I just knew the Broccoli's didn't own the rights.
I like Dalton, but he was a Bond out of time. They tried to gritty Bond up a little and the public weren't ready for it yet.
I had heard that many Bond actors were the one before the one they wanted:
They wanted Moore when they got Lazenby. They wanted Dalton when they got Moore. They wanted Brosnan when they got Dalton.
That could be wrong though. Makes for an interesting 'what if?' though.
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
Octopussy is better than Moonraker, which itself is far above A View to a Kill, which is a terrible Bond film. I also like Octopussy better than For Your Eyes Only, which I think is pretty dull and overrated. The Man with the Golden Gun is just OK, should've been better. The two best Moore Bonds are Live and Let Die and The Spy Who Love Me by a wide margin.
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
"They wanted Moore when they got Lazenby. They wanted Dalton when they got Moore. They wanted Brosnan when they got Dalton."
Yes, all these are true. Also, Burt Reynolds was offered the role when they panicked in 1970 being without a Bond after Lazenby dropped out. Though to Reynold's credit he declined, stating an englishman should play the part. Broccoli and co. were still in panic mode and hired American actor John Gavin, but in the 11th hour, Connery came back for a cool million, and John Gavin was paid in full to step aside.

That'd be Sean Connery then, I guess...

The Curse is decent enough, and plays out like some sort of Invaders From Mars / I Drink Your Blood hybrid. The movie looks great though, especially in its recent HD version. It's still a mystery how Italian horror maestro Lucio Fulci ended up as associate producer on this one (although rumours persist he had nothing to do with it).

What about these two drama's Billy Bathgate (1991) and Blaze (1989)
Watched Billy Bathgate when it first came out but have very little recollection of what it was like, never seen Blaze before. Has anyone got any opinions on these two which are paired up on a cheap double feature Blu Ray from Mill Creek.
Worth a watch?
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
Both worth seeing I think. The 90's were the era of the gangster/mobster/mafia films, and while I think BB is worth a watch, compared to Bugsy, Goodfellas, Casino, Donnie Brasco etc. it kinda pales. I believe Blaze is from Ron Shelton (Bull Durham/White Men Can't Jump) and plays like a long version of Burt Reynold's weirdo politician character from Striptease... that is the best way I can decribe it
Posted by Pittsburghgirl (Member # 7514) on :
I have never seen, nor do I desire to see, Billy Bathgate. Dustin Hoffman as a gangster?! No way. He is a little puny nebbish. I see Loren Dean hasn't done any tv or movies for the past 5 years. I do remember him in another tv show cancelled too soon, Terriers.
Posted by Peter Lemonjello (Member # 37395) on :
Hoffman is not as bad as one might think, playing notorious Jewish gangster, Dutch Schultz. But I've seen better incarnations, such as Tim Roth in Hoodlum.
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
Tim Roth is one of those actors who can make anything better. He's great.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
I always thought this was a great little movie with Tim Roth giving a fine performance and that is 1996's No Way Home.
I see the 1988 thriller Criminal Law starring Gary Old man and Kevin Bacon has just been released to Blu-ray here in the UK,watched it back in the day but not seen it since and my memories of it are fuzzy!
Anyone know if it's worth checking out?
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :
Donīt remember much either but it must be worth a revisit. I have a vhs tape here somewhere.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Yeah it's got a good cast Atomik as along with Oldman and Bacon you also have Joe Don Baker and Karen Young (Burt Reynolds "Heat") just that despite the odd bit now coming back to me it doesn't seem to be the least bit memorable unless it's because there's so many of these types of thrillers with more or less identical plot lines that it's just got lost amongst the bunch!
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
There's not much love for Criminal Law--and it is far from a perfect film--but I like it. Besides the great cast which was already been mentioned, I think that it was Gary Oldman's first time doing an American accent. He's excellent, as you'd expect. It was also the first time likeable Kevin Bacon played a villain, and he's chillingly good as a serial killer. It has an interesting plot. Defense attorney Oldman gets Bacon acquitted of murder and then realizes that he really is a serial killer and decides to represent him again to stop him at all costs. There are a lot of head-scratching moments and holes in the screenplay--and it looks like there was some post-production tinkering--but I don't think that it's bad at all. Even when it's slow or contrived, the acting is very watchable. I think that it's a forgotten little B-film, with A-list talent.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Cheers Crash I will most definitely check it out and let you know my thoughts when I do!

From the poster alone it looks pretty interesting and I see the director David Dury went on to direct Defense Of The Realm which I have never seen but have heard mostly good things about and he was also behind the enjoyable Boxing Drama Split Decisions starring Craig Sheffer and the great Gene Hackman.

Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
Meh, meh, meh. This is one of those completely forgotten 80s comedies like Lovesick, Simon, or Unfaithfully Yours that has a good cast, germ of a good idea, but is ultimately forgettable. The only thing that I remember about The Lonely Guy is that Charles Grodin was funnier than Steve Martin.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Cheers Crash I might still give it a go as it's about the same price as a rental,Unfaithfully Yours it's been a while since I've watched that one and from memory I think I remember it being quite a slow affair that only really comes alive towards the very end!
Dudley done the odd stinker in his time and though i've never seen it I hear that Best Defense with Eddie Murphy was supposedly one of his worse.
Anyone out there seen Best Defense from 1984 and is it really as bad as its reputation would have you believe?

Both Lonely Guy and Best Defense are decent films but they should be much better.
Agree with Crash that Grodin is funnier than Martin in Lonely Guy and as good as Eddie Murphy was back in those days, his copy/paste scenes in Best Defense just wonīt work.
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
I think that Charles Grodin is brilliant. He's so low-keyed and deadpan that it looks like he's not even trying to get laughs. Yet that hang-dog expression and delivery make me laugh every time. Midnight Run is his forgotten masterpiece. He is hilarious and DeNiro, way out of character, is the perfect foil. Great film.

I'll pitch in with my 'Best Defence' of Lonely Guy - hahhahhahahhahaaaaaaaaa! SHOOT ME!
I really like Lonely Guy which is loosely based on a guide for life book. It has some slapsticky stuff in it that doesn't entirely work, and the third act doesn't really match the opening in terms of laughs. However it does have some genuinely good scenes like Steve trying to find the girls number in the phone directory, and the cop asking Grodin whether the store that he got his celebrity party friend standees had Gene Hackman.
However, this:
quote:The only thing that I remember about The Lonely Guy is that Charles Grodin was funnier than Steve Martin. I think that Charles Grodin is brilliant. He's so low-keyed and deadpan that it looks like he's not even trying to get laughs. Yet that hang-dog expression and delivery make me laugh every time.
Is totally true. He steals the show by doing almost nothing. The bit where he's sitting on the sofa staring in front of himself and the phone rings, then before he answers it he has to practise speaking before picking up kills me every time.
'Unfaithfully Yours' is a remake, but as others have said it's a little slow with a fun third act. 'Lovesick' doesn't work entirely, but Elizabeth McGovern is lovely. I really have a soft spot for Dudley Moore. However, I haven't seen Best Defence since it came out, and I remember it being awful. Apparently they just shoved the Murphy stuff in when they knew it was a turkey to try and cash in on his growing popularity.
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
Yeah, Grodin has some really memorable scenes in The Lonely Guy. He can be funny just sitting around.
I agree with you on Unfaithfully Yours. It kind of picks up a bit in the third act. Elizabeth McGovern was always welcome in an 80s movie for me too, even if it wasn't so hot like Lovesick, Ragtime, or From the Hip. She always had an approachable, pleasant, girl-next-door look.
I always liked Dudley Moore even back to his days with Peter Cook. They were a hilarious duo, but then they had a falling out.
As Moore's Hollywood bankability increased after Arthur, unfortunately, the good roles didn't, which was a real shame. He was such a gifted comedian and jazz pianist, who died too young.
Best Defense is terrible as is Chevy Chase's Deal of the Century on kind of the same subject matter.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Looking at Dudley's IMDB page there's quite a few of his I've yet to watch
Here's a few I've never seen -
The Hound Of The Baskervilles (1978) Foul Play Six Weeks Wholly Moses - which I do actually own. Lovesick Romantic Comedy Best Defense Santa Claus Blame it on the Bellboy
From the ones I have seen here's a few that I liked
10 Arthur and to a lesser degree its sequel Micki + Maude Unfaithfully Yours i thought was not too bad Crazy People I liked quite a bit Like Father Like Son I thought Dudley was pretty great in that!
I'm probably one of the very few that didn't dislike the mentioned Chevy Chase comedy Deal Of The Century though will admit that it's pretty short on laughs, performances were all pretty decent though especially Gregory Hines who much like Charles Grodin by the sounds of it steals the show!
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Bit late in the day really to ask should I watch this or not as I saw it going dirt cheap and thought what the hell and went and ordered it but what should I expect from this 1979 Comedy Western starring Kirk Douglas and Arnold Schwarzenegger?
Also another blind buy I saw this also going really cheap on Amazon despite the fact It's only been out a couple of weeks on Blu Ray over here in the UK so I ordered it and that is the sci - fi adventure Solarbabies aka Solar Warriors,i like the cast what with Jami Gertz and Jason Patric and I know chances are it's going to be a bit silly but i am sort of hoping for something along the lines of the awesome Prayer Of The Rollerboys!
So what should I expect from these are they both big Turkey's that I should save for Xmas or are they actually good fun flicks that I need to check out A.S.A.P?

Of the ones that you haven't seen, the only one that I'd really recommend is Foul Play, which is a sharply paced and funny Hitchcock take-off, the first pairing of Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn. (They have excellent chemistry.) Dudley has a small part as a symphony conductor. The rest of them are pretty lackluster. Lovesick or Romantic Comedy would be next best, but they are pretty weak. Wholly Moses has maybe two laughs, and as noted before, The Best Defense is terrible. The Peter Cook/Dudley Moore version of The Hound of the Baskervilles is really bad, almost unwatchable, which is a real shame coming from one of the funniest Brit comedy duos of all time. Santa Claus: The Movie is a truly boring kids' movie. I can't remember much about Blame it on the Bellboy, which should tell you how good it is. And finally, Six Weeks has Dudley, Mary Tyler Moore, and a little girl who has six weeks to live. It's a dreadful tearjerker.
Now that you've listed the Dudley Moore filmography, I am astounded remembering how many crummy films he did in his career. It's a shame. He was a funny, talented guy. Apart from Arthur, a terrific film, and to a lesser extent 10, his film career never lived up to its promise.

Here's a few of of Martin's films I've yet to see -
Novocaine Grand Canyon The Spanish Prisoner A Simple Twist Of Fate Leap Of Faith Pennies From Heaven Movers & Shakers Mixed Nuts Pink Panther 1 & 2 The Big Year It's Complicated

Mixed Nuts--bad, misfire from Nora Ephron
Novocaine--weird, funny black comedy. I liked it.
Grand Canyon--serious Lawrence "The Big Chill" Kasdan film. Very good.
The Spanish Prison--brilliant David Mamet mindbender. Steve Martin in a completely straight part--Ed O'Neil in one too--is exceptionally good. I love this film.
A Simple Twist of Fate--one of Martin's serious forays, based on Silas Marner. It's okay for what it is, and it does tug the heartstrings.
Leap of Faith--Martin as a phony faith healer. He's good, as you'd expect, but the film is kind of a fizzle.
Pennies from Heaven--You'll either love it or hate it. There's no in-between. Based on an acclaimed BBC TV series by Dennis Potter, it's a truly depressing musical. It looks great, cast is great--brilliant Christopher Walken song-and-dance number--and I can admire the craftsmanship. But it's really depressing. Really. The way Martin degrades Jessica Harper as his wife will have you just cringe.
Movers & Shakers--not bad film about the industry with a lot of inside jokes. Decent.
Pink Panther films--a lot of folks slag on Martin and these films, but he was the perfect choice to redo Clouseau. And while they aren't close to the Peter Sellers films, they do generate some good laughs. Kevin Kline is good as Martin's boss.
I have not seen The Big Year and It's Complicated.

I saw Krull for the first time when i was still a kid. It's a likable fantasy adventure, for sure. I don't have the blu-ray, but do own the older dvd version.
Warrior, make it a double-feature with The Neverending Story for maximum impact !
I wish i could experience these movies just as intense as i did when i was young.. Good memories !

I've not seen The Never Ending Story either but I know my son's got it on DVD so I will check it out.
Has anyone watched the sci-fi flick The Ice Pirates before and if so is that pretty good fun?

The Ice Pirates is an okay time killer. It has a few funny bits, and Robert Urich, always a likeable lead, is good. The cast seemed like they were having a good time. It's a shame that Urich never had a movie career. He was a solid actor with good screen presence.

It also stars Mary Crosby, the chick who shot J.R. Ewing. As it happens, i just started watching Dallas season 4 where the shooter is revealed
Anyway, Crash is right. I recall that itīs a decent time waster and another one i should rewatch.

I'll check it out though I'll probably rent it first, sort of reminds me a bit of Space Hunter Adventures In The Forbidden Zone which I found to be quite imaginative and a blast to watch when I watched it for the first time the other year!
I reckon J.R had it coming to him he always was a nasty bit of work!
Can you remember Dynasty Atomik and the spin off called the Colby's where there was a crazy Alien abduction scene involving the beautiful Emma Samms - https://youtu.be/ju8YH6ewoqQ

I know Dynasty very well and also own few season sets but iīve never seen The Colbys. Now that was pretty OTT stuff there, thanks for sharing

One could argue with the line "he career takes off like a speeding bullet"...

"Takes off like a slow moving horse and cart?"
Krull has a good cast, and all the ingredients to be a great action movie, but the plot flaws just weaken the film too much. Think of it as a series of good set pieces but not a great movie. Lysette Anthony looked great but for some reason they chose to dub her voice with an American actress.
Ice Pirates is a low-budget blast. Everyone is having fun and clearly not taking the film too seriously. I agree with Crash; Robert Urich was always likeable and seemed permanently on the cusp of being a bigger star. He'll always be 'Spenser for Hire' to me.
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
I, too, loved Robert Urich as Spenser. Having read almost all of the Robert B. Parker Spenser books, I have to say that he was perfectly cast, as was Avery Brooks as Hawk and the female leads. I thought that the show really captured the feel of the books, the later made-in-Canada TV movies perhaps not as much, but Urich as Spenser has always been a favorite with me.
One more thing about The Ice Pirates. It was directed by Stewart Raffill, who also did cool films like High Risk and The Philadelphia Experiment, along with junk like Tammy and the T-Rex and Mac and Me. He was a very underrated director with a good eye for action and shot composition. It's a pity that while he flirted with becoming a big-budget, studio-film guy, he just didn't quite make it.

"I'm going to sue Spielberg! When I saw ET I could tell that he'd ripped off a story I wrote about a young boy who befriends a lost alien and they both build a special bond before the alien has to go home!" "Wow. That does sound the same. What was it called?" "Mac and Me."
He does seem to have had a patchy career. I really like Ice Pirates and the Philidelphia Experiment. Never seen High Risk but it sounds good to me.
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
The Philadelphia Experiment is clearly Raffill's best film. I believe that for a while John Carpenter was going to direct it. He's listed as an Executive Producer in the credits. The Ice Pirates is indeed very entertaining. High Risk is ridiculous--four ordinary guys, all good actors like Ernest Borgnine, decide to rip off a Colombian drug lord--but it's a lot of B-movie fun. When I lived in Philadelphia in the early 80s, local newspaper critic Joe Baltake was a huge Raffill fan (probably the only one), going so far as to praising his earlier family films like The Sea Gypsies. I think Baltake still works for some syndication service. I used to love reading his stuff. He was the rare critic who wasn't a snob and really appreciated films on their merits, despite the budget or genre. For example, he also liked Albert Pyun's The Sword and the Sorcerer and raved about Abel Ferrara's Ms. 45 My kind of critic!

High risk is a blast and certainly worth hunting down Logan and it's a pity that it has been so neglected over the years despite it having a very solid cast.
I have a budget Dvd of it but the picture quality is attrocious and more like a VHS rip and a bad one at that!
The Philadelphia Experiment is also a really fun movie, never seen Mac and Me but from the trailer alone and the gif image above it looks hilariously bad!
Joe Baltake sounds like my kind of film critic Crash!

One of the coolest gif images ever!
Too bad my Mac and Me tape was damaged but i believe thereīs another one lying around somewhere. I need to investigate.

Found High Risk on Youtube... that poster makes it look like a comedy, but it's playing more like a thriller!

Your right Logan from what I remember it's more of an action/thriller with the odd comedic moment,i looked at the picture quality on YouTube and like my DVD it leaves a lot to be desired and I think the only time I have watched this with a half decent picture clarity is when it aired on the box from time to time late at night on BBC 1 here back in the day.
Certainly needs a re-release on either Dvd or Blu-ray and I'd imagine someone sooner or later will pick it up!

Leo Logan has just posted on 80s Blu Ray's coming soon thread that the 1985 action adventure King Solomon's Mines is coming to Blu Ray from Olive Films in February 2017 and I was wondering is it worth checking out?
I've seen the sequel Allan Quartermain And The Lost City Of Gold which I thought was pretty bad but I have read that the original is easily the better out of the two and unlike the sequel I can actually remember this doing the rounds at the theatres and was an altogether bigger budgeted affair plus it was also directed by the talented J Lee Thompson!
Anyone seen it?

Haha, well itīs better than Firewalker which isnīt much really. I suggest you grab a sixpack before watching it
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
I'll second the vote about getting a six-pack. The Allan Quartermain films are the Cannon/Grade D versions of the Indiana Jones films. The first one is marginally--and I do mean marginally--better than the second one. And Firewalker.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
I've seen the second one and that was tough going and you say this one is only marginally better. Oh Dear!
I think I'll give this one a wide birth and Firewalker which I watched again recently on Blu-ray rental I found that one a bit of a slog considering it was supposed to be a Action Comedy it actually had very little of either on display!
Posted by Johnny Roarke is reckless (Member # 9826) on :
Come on, these movies are great fun.. i love all three of them, and i am not ashamed to admit it !
Although i do think there's some nostalgia involved here, as i've seen all three when they first came out on video. If i hadn't seen them before, and would watch them for the first time nowadays, my opinion could be completely different.
I also think it would have been wiser to release King Solomon's Mines and Allan Quatermain And The Lost City Of Gold as a double-feature on blu-ray rather than two seperate releases, especially since there are no special features.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Don't get me wrong Johnny I didn't think that Firewalker was terrible and the both times that I have watched it I have made it through to the very end and also I did like the pairing of Norris and Lou Gossett it's just that I thought the film really lacked in the action department especially for a mid 80s Cannon films Norris Action Adventure!
If they'd picked up the pace a bit more and made things that more explosive I think it would have made it so much more fun!
I also think it would have made more sense for them to release them both (King Solomon's/Quartermain) together as a double feature but I suppose this is Olive Films we are talking about that can barely even scrape a trailer together for there releases!
Posted by TerdNthePoolGGB (Member # 9818) on :
The name Quartermain alone makes me want to watch it. So cool
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Going through my VHS and I spotted these two that have been sitting around for years and I have never got around to watching them - The Playboy's from 1992 and Soapdish from 1991.
Well I've finally got around to watching The Playboy's and must say I really enjoyed it but have still yet to check out Soapdish, anyone watched it before and if so what should I expect is it a worthy watch?
It's definitely got a good cast whatever!
Posted by TerdNthePoolGGB (Member # 9818) on :
I would burn soapdish.
Saw Three for the Road at the DAV. I almost bought it but thought I would consult the experts first. I'm pretty sure I saw this back in the day since I liked Sheen at the time, not so much now. Chan't remember anything about it
Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :
Three for the Road is a harmless road movie with a cool cast. A chance to see Alan Ruck right after Ferris, lovely Kerri Green and yes, i still like Charlie So, what are you wating for I need to revisit this one myself one of these days.
Haha. Thanx aTomik. Ill go back and get it
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
I'd like to check out Three For The Road but the UK VHS is really scarce, I'd say go for it Terd as the cast what with Sheen,Alan Ruck etc it sounds a good one!
I have seen this early 90s Michael J Fox comedy before on VHS upon its original release under the alternative title of The Concierge but remember very little about it,anyhow they have a lot of Universal movie Blu Ray titles for 2 for 10 UK pounds here in the UK at the moment and not sure whether it's worth grabbing or not?
Also what was Clint Eastwood's The Eiger Sanction like and also The Beguiled (which again I haven't seen for many years) and also the film Breezy which he directed like?
Looked back at previous posts and Breezy seems quite highly regarded!

Anybody seen this 1988 comedy The Invisible Kid starring Jay Underwood and Karen Black (Invaders From Mars) and if so is it worth checking out for a few laughs?
There's a budget dvd I've seen doing the rounds on different sites which I might just grab anyway!

I probably haven't seen this since 88 so my memory may be cloudy, from what I remember it was below average, obviously has a few scenes a teenage boy in the 80's was looking for but I don't remember it even being that funny. It's no Weird Science.
I have to admit I own this but it is still in it's cellophane wrapper, I may crack it open.
Posted by TheHoff (Member # 37515) on :
So I watched The Invisible Kid, it's very clearly as low budget as I remember, don't get me wrong there are some amusing bits in it. Some of the acting is way over the top.
I tried watching it when I posted my original comment but I had to turn it off because I wasn't in the right mood, I think you have to be to watch this. I did get through it yesterday and found myself smiling at a few bits but not much.
I would rate it 3.762 out of 10.
I think I'm glad I watched it again but do feel my time could have been better spent.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Cheers for checking it out Hoff I might give it a rental instead of going for the blind buy as it sounds a little bit underwhelming and not quite the hidden gem that I thought I'd perhaps missed out on!
