Does anyone have an explanation or a theory of how Ferris could have changed his sick days on the school computer from home?

Was this possible in the 80's without the internet?

It's simple: with Ferris Bueller, ANYTHING is possible, period.

He connects to the school computer using his dial up modem and goes from there [Smile]

I did not realise that kind of technology existed back then.

Rudimentary message boards existed back then. The ability to game "online" with other people was able to be done. Technology from the mid 80's wasn't as backwards as it is usually assumed to have been.

Here's a great documentary about the BBS days if you're interested

Bear in mind this is very US-centric. There were(are?) lots of BBSes all over the world.

Also, you might enjoy this:

BBC Micro Live (1983)

A series produced to show off all the possible uses for your 8 bit computer.

It also includes one of the first live hacks @ 1hr10mins [Smile]
