Does anybody have old movie ads from the 80s. Rolling Stone magazine used to put upcoming movie ads in there mag. I have some and would like to show them on here but not sure how to get them on. If you have any i would love to see them.

I have plenty. I still have a whole bunch of promotional catalogues from 80's videostores and their suppliers, plus magazines, posters, lobbycards, and cardboard displays. Very happy i never threw them away, because nowadays they provide a wealth of information about which movies were being released on video back in the day, many of them still unavailable on any digital format.
Unfortunately i don't have the ability to make pics and put 'em up on the site.

Vintage Dutch video magazine covers from '87 - '89.
Pics are taken from the internet, but i actually do have these at home, plus several others from 1987 with Flash Gordon, The Jewel Of The Nile, and The Fly on the front-covers. Each issue is about 70 pages, and has tons of reviews of then-new video-releases as well as electronics like TVs, VCRs and cameras.

oh yeah Johnny! love those. The big recorder is something. Thanx for posting. Really enjoyed looking at them.

These mags look very cool johnny and in the exact same style of the ones I used to collect over here in the UK which were named video today and video -the magazine which were monthly editions.
Both magazines followed a similar pattern with new releases at the front, then interviews and random other bits n bobs, then a large detailed review section of the months releases, next would a hardware review with video cams and recorders.
Then at the very back was the adult section which I managed to keep quite a secret from my mother until one month they decided to extend it to include the outer back page.
Always remember the look of shock horror on my parents face, though they did not stop me from collecting them which was cool!

Picked up a Hit Parader magazine from 1983 at a garage sale today that had an ad for Private School for Girls on the back cover. Its pretty good.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
This hit parader magazine looks like a great read terdnthepoolggb,it says on the cover of the ones I have seen online that it was also available in the UK as well but for the life of me I don't think I've ever come across it or either that I have seen it before and it's just not registering.
I know we've always had kerrang - the rock magazine over here where I live in the UK because I've read thru it enough times on my trips to the supermarket, you know the deal the wife does the food shopping while you dissapear down the magazine aisle

hahaha! The best aisle in the store Warrior. its fun to see stuff that was being discussed at that time which was new at that time and knowing more about it now and comparing the opinions after 30 years. also scored a Blondie poster from the early 80s over the weekend for a dollar. I was surprised when i sawit on ebay selling for $30.
Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
It's surprising what people get rid off in these garage sales or boot fairs as we have here in the UK terdnthepoolggb, some people just don't realize the real value of what they are selling.
Saying that at the end of the day what they don't know won't hurt them and what's there loss is our gain
Sales for $30 upwards, sounds like you got a right bargain there and I imagine it will only go up in value.
Posted by TerdNthePoolGGB (Member # 9818) on :
i got lucky on that poster. i bought it for myself since i loved Blondie back then. i had no idea of its value. If i knew its value i would have bought other one they had. Yes, they had another. o well, Im happy. not familiar with the karrang mag. ill check it out

Those video magazines look awesome. I've never seen them before. I used to love Hit Parader and Circus. Kerrang was harder to find here in PA. I worked at the mall over Christmas break when I was around 20-21 selling gift certificates. When I took my lunch break, I'd go eat, then go to Thrift Drug and read HP or Circus. The girls who worked there didn't mind. I picked up a few of those type magazines at an antiques mall about 5 years ago. I need to dig them up and let you all know which months/years they were from.

I own lots of these 80s hard and heavy magazines. Mainly Metal Hammer and Kerrang but also some Faces Rocks, Hard Rock, Hit Parader and Crash (german) magazines.

This is a pic of just a few of my monthly video mag I used collect which was known as - video - the magazine.
These used to be a really great read and was packed with reviews of the months new releases, latest software, news, adverts even an adult section which my mother didn't really approve of.
The great thing was that they were always delivered on a Saturday morning when I was off school so I could just crash out most of the day and read it to my heart's content!

This was the free in store monthly mini video magazine known as - video epics you could pick up in store at my local video rental outlet known as - tower pleasure video.
Really great little video magazine that I looked forward to coming into store each month and the fact it was free made it more the better.
Inside June 1985 edition featuring - the legend of Billie jean and just one of the guys.
And inside September 1984
Featuring Malibu bikini shop or the bikini shop as it was known here in the UK,a question of guilt and a full page ad for - the vindicator.

Atomik am I right in thinking rock/heavy rock is the most popular form of music in Finland,if so it sounds like my type of place!

August 1986 edition with Hugh Hudson's - revolution on the front.
I actually used to collect 2 monthly video magazine's,this was the other one - video today .
This was another really decent read with more or less the same format as the other monthly I got but with enough small differences between the both to make it also a worthy pick up.
Inside September 1985s featuring reviews of - chud,Hawaiian heat, the last run, dutch girls, sky high and Disney's the undergrads starring art carney.

What are the thrift stores like Pittsburghgirl, when I watch a lot of these online video reviews you always get the reviewers saying this is what I picked up at the local thrift store and it will be some rare old vhs,DVDs etc. Is it a store that is made up of a bit of everything?
Posted by Pittsburghgirl (Member # 7514) on :
Young warrior, some thrift stores have a bit of everything, but finding anything good is getting tough. Everyone is trying to sell everything on eBay. We don't have a lot of thrift stores around here other than Salvation Army and Goodwill, which both rely on donated goods. Most of it is clothing, then, a little bit of toys and games, books, housewares, furniture, records, VHS and DVDs, costume jewelry, etc. I have found a few old concert programs at these stores, but that was probably about 10 years ago. I've never seen good old magazines there.

Cool pics, warrior! I´ll try to post few too if i can get good enough photos.
Yeah, we love heavy metal here but pop/rock is also very popular and one thing that i don´t like, finnish rap music is hip right now.
Aah, Malibu Bikini Shop. Now that´s a classic beach flick!

Same as me I've never really taken to rap in general, talking of Malibu bikini shop I always wondered why I couldn't find a UK vhs i never noticed it was under an alternative title (the bikini shop),saying that I bet the old vhs is pretty rare now.
It's one I've been wanting to check out for an absolute age but never managed to get my hands on.
Maybe it will get a blu ray release at some point!
That's one I've just noticed from my magazine pic I'd like to check out which I've never seen - dutch girls.
Have you ever seen it atomik?

Here´s few finnish video magazines i have. The original "newspaper" editon around ´85-´86.
The new look ´87.
One of the biggest finnish video rental chains, R-Kioski, had their own vip video club and magazine. These are from ´84-´89.
And one of the biggest distributors, Showtime, also had their own magazine. These are from ´87-´89.

Wow! Barbara carerra, forgot all about her, lucky old lone wolf mcquade.
I always quite enjoyed target with Hackman and Dillon, not seen it in a while,it's no classic but I still think it's quite underatted.
Anyhow great pics of what look like some really great mags!

I've got a few editions actually,I'll dig them out when I get chance.

Another couple of pics from inside my little video epics magazines featuring full page ads for the kiwi car chase thriller - shaker run and the world war 2 drama - codename emerald which I believe stars ed Harris in an early role.
Shaker run is a pretty fun flick actually not seen it for quite sometime.
And below full page ads for mgm releases - dream lover which I've never seen and hellhole which is a bit of a trash classic which I also own an old vhs of.

I know that some people here have already done this. The finnish vhs collectors "community" is still pretty vital.
Dream Lover was a disappointment, warrior. I know i started a Dream Lover thread but we must have lost it. Hellhole is excellent sleazefest.

This is taken from my year one school project book where for an hour or 2 during the school week you would sit in class and write about a hobby or any interest as such.
Obviously my interest was films so I'd write little mini film reviews,do drawings, get magazine cut outs and stick them in.
I remember my teacher writing this comment "why have you seen it?" In reference to me having watched first blood which was a 15 when at the time I was only 11.
God knows what he thought when he realized I was watching 18s as well.
I've just noticed on my little write up of mad max 2 I wrote - it's about a oil company in the desert being attacked by punks and that there are quite violent scenes but children would like it

It says 30 UK pence on the cover but I always remember picking it up for free.
This is the march 1990 edition featuring a full page ad for k-9 plus a video classics section featuring the likes of - karate kid 2,for queen and country and john carpenter's dark star.
And a double paged ad for the late river phoenix's - a night in the life of jimmy reardon which I've got a feeling was known as just - jimmy reardon here in the UK.
Never seen it before but have heard many mixed reviews from it.

And below from video hits magazine 1987
A full page ad for the Medusa home video releases of the excellent - the gate, the video dead and wheels of terror starring the late great oliver reed and also David carradine.
On the adjoining page there are reviews for rivers edge (great flick),the good wife starring Bryan brown and Rachel ward, poker Alice featuring the ever tanned george hamilton, sweet revenge what looks like a low budget action flick featuring Nancy Allen (wouldn't mind checking this out) and lastly the three amigos which was a lot of fun.
Don't know whether you can see my bad habit of back then of ticking everything I watched (next to three amigos) which nows bugs the hell out of me because now all I think of it is as that I defaced the magazine!

some more 80s video adverts - we have in the first pic from above sylvester stallone in rocky 1,well actually tell a lie it's not quite rocky it's - ricky 1 with Michael Michaud ( i know i've never heard of him either) and it scores what i think is an all time low on imdb for any film i've ever looked up - a miserable 1.3.
gary busey in bulletproof,i've got a new and sealed dvd of this sat on my shelf which i picked up a few months back which i've yet to get around to watching,i will do soon though at some point!
anyone seen busey's bulletproof before and if so what did you think?
from the adjoining page i've seen scared stiff with andrew stevens, gung ho which i quite enjoyed, wild thing i've seen but remember little from but know it's coming to blu ray shortly.
bullies i own on dvd which is a very entertaining hillbilly revenge flick!
the only one i've never seen is american anthem.
lastly we have a medusa home video line up advert for the winter months which features another busey action flick and that is - eye of the tiger which i thought was really enjoyable.
never heard much on the ninja action pic - white phantom before, seems a pretty obsure title that with only 3 external reviews on imdb.

i need to check it out again at some point if i get chance!
pretty cool looking ad for the enjoyable dolph lundgren action flick red scorpion and also reviews for the likes of my stepmother is an alien, beaches, homeboy, the mighty quinn etc.
i watched homeboy again not long back, was a lot better than how i rembered it,infact i thought it was rather decent with a couple of great performances from mickey rourke and christopher walken.
also watched - without a clue starring michael caine and ben kingsley for the first time not long back and that was a blast.
really good fun!

I agree terdnthepoolggb, I must say I did like the magazine a lot overall but i did at times think that the reviewers were a bunch of muppets.
I remember they rated - death wish 3 a 1 out of 5 and also - the delta force a 1 out Of 5 and if that wasn't annoying enough you would then get some artsy fartsy brit period flick (where everyone talks through there noses) come along and it would get high fives across the board!
