here is a review of sixteen candles blu ray that comes out in 2 weeks - http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Sixteen-Candles-Blu-ray/41390/#Review .

From that review:
Suffering from a noticeably filtered look, grain has largely been lifted out of the picture leaving a smoother viewing experience with moments of slight ringing and aliasing."

This is the problem with so many blu-ray releases of older movies that drives me crazy. When they do all this excessive dnr smearing to remove all of the grain, they are just removing detail from the image, resulting in a very fake, waxy looking picture that is far different from the film's theatrical appearance.

I never liked this movie. Not even the first time back then.

Entire thing quoted for truth [Big Grin]

It has been shipping from amazon for about a week.. very tempted to get it but I know the picture quality is going to suck. I recorded it in HD off one of the movie channels (cinemax I believe) and I have an idea the Blu-ray is going to look WORSE [Frown]

Is like an unforgiven sin I guess. Well then I'll be crucified upside down spinning my head and vomiting for not liking crappy Sixteen Candles.

Devolution here,

At least explain yourself. What exactly don't you like about it?

I mean there are movies that I don't like that everyone likes, but I give a reason.

"Crappy Sixteen Candles" makes me think you haven't even seen the whole movie.

I'm not going to bash you (yet) everyone deserves an opinion, and I myself have ripped Manhunter, To Live and Die in LA and Pretty In Pink to say a few. I'm just curious to hear your reasons.

We are DEVO

devo, you rip manhunter and LA, they are great. come on, the will graham speech where he figures everything out, is great in itself.

i like the movie sixteen candles, but i wonder why it is so well liked by most.

i also like the breakfast club, i cant figure out why though, its a bunch of kids in detention, and its more dramatic than it is comedic, yet there is alot of good laughs
plus that scene where emilo shatters the door is one of the stupidist things i have seen in a movie

i think fast times at ridgemont high is the movie Equivalent of chinese food, you watch and then not to long later your in the mood to watch it again at least i am

I want to start by saying that movie watching is so subjective and I have been baffled more than once when someone totally doesn't appreciate a movie the way that I do. But I know that so much including our own personalities and taste can influence it, so I try not to overly bash a movie even though I will definitely tell you if it is not a fav of mine. The old theory of one person's junk is another person's treasure definitely applies in the world of movies. [Smile]

With that said .. "Sixteen Candles" is one of my all-time fav movies! My top 20 is always changing it seems, but "Sixteen Candles" has remained in my top 5 for awhile now.

Devo .. below are a few of my reasons:

Forgotten birthday, The Rave-ups, Confidential note, Jake Ryan, 80's bedroom posters, Long Duk Dong, Graded School dance, Filene!, Water fountain girl, girl's underpants, house party, drive-in food tray, safe as kittens, 80's cordless phone, JAAKKKEE!, geeks in a trunk, Rolls Royce, prom queen photos, Dad explaining crushes, birth control pills, married..sheesh!, headgear, red Porsche, and make a wish!

[Cool]

I might watch it today now! thanks

A girl who gets all emo because her family can't remember her 16th birthday. Do I need to say more?..

Posted by The Good Package (Member # 9492) on :

what is emo? i have seen that mentioned a few times.

Posted by Earth Angel (Member # 3301) on :

I would get all emo if my family forgot my birthday NOW....let alone when I was an angsty teen. Not that they could...not that I don't start telling then how many sleeps there are leading up to it. [Razz]

It is a great film though.

ah, the funny looking moody people. couldnt they have come up with a better name for their group, like "the positivly challenged"

Back in the day, we just called it New Age.

I think these emo-kids are pretty much the same as the new-agers from the 80's.

Well i guess that explains why my Blu-Ray 80s movies dont look like its full HD(1080p) [Confused] The background of the movies all look the same..Grainy. I thought maybe i had a bad HDMI cable? bc my tv and blu ray player are top notch. I spoke to a sellsman at best buys and he say most of the 80s movies on blu ray are NOT remasted in full HD. So i think im going to cease with 80s blu ray movies and stick to DVD format only.

The Best Buy guy was wrong - Most of the Studio released 80's movies are in fact full HD. And any movie shot on film is going to have grain in it, no matter what resolution it's displayed in. Now, some will have more than others depending on the quality of the transfer, type of film stock the movie was shot in, source materials used, etc. But I would much rather have a "grainy" looking image than one where all the grain and detail is digitally scrubbed out, which tends to be the norm nowadays.

I haven't seen that many Blurays but at least most old movies (70's/80's) are not worth the change. I really don't see why people get a hard on with this.

Posted by John Kreese (Member # 9369) on :

It all depends on the quality of the transfer and the source. Some of the best looking blu-rays are old movies. The Searchers, Casablanca, 2001, and Jaws, for example, looks absolutely fantastic. But these transfers were all recently done with latest technology and transferred from the original negatives, which were painstakingly restored. Most Blu-Ray releases are simply copies of the HD video master that would have been done for their first vhs/dvd releases, and the technology has progressed quite a bit in the last few years.

They make a huge difference.

Even simple flicks like Adventures in Babysitting and particularly Trading Places look great in HD, especially on bigger screens. Try watching the same movie from DVD and then BluRay on a 65"+ screen.

Grain is normal on older movies, it doesn't mean they're not full HD. Using NR to rid the grain is seen as sacrilegious.

Posted by Zigyma7ik (Member # 12351) on :

No it doesn't make a HUGE difference. I did watch some dvd's before the Bluray and it shows improvement but not as expected. Sorry man, but i leave Bluirays for new movies. Give me good ol' grainy flicks all day long.

As I said, you see more of the original film grain with HD. Standard def makes the image softer so in fact you see less of your favoured "good ol'" grain and more importantly picture detail.

BTTF comparison (look at the detail in the newspaper as an example and even the plates on the DeLorean).

Yah I know... but still I'm not convince. I rather stay without changes for the old ones. Blurays for new flicks.

That would defeat the point of the comparison, the BD shots were slightly reduced by the host already.

Some newer movies will eventually look even worse than their older counterparts. Once Upon a Time in Mexico and The Phantom Menace were both shot digitally at a native resolution of 1080P so will never look any better than they do currently (which is fine for now). The remastering of The Wizard of Oz was scanned in at 8K (7680x4320) due to film having (technically) no maximum resolution.

Well for the thread's sake, can you take them off... Who cares about the comparison really.

It's 2012, not 1998. I doubt anyone is using dial-up.

A picture is worth a thousand words, which is handy to counter such misinformation as "there's no difference between DVD and BluRay".

I haven't picked it up yet. I would almost rather watch a friend's copy of the blu-ray before upgrading. The Breakfast Club actually did look substantially better on blu-ray than the dvd (which was a shock, considering the the nature of the movie). On my tv it looked much better than the DVD, but others that I have upgraded didn't improve much at all, and from what I've read and heard about the Sixteen Candles upgrade, I'm uncertain.
