This thread is dedicated to those mostly forgotten 80's horror films that probably don't deserve their own thread, but are fun to discuss. A few will truly be hidden gems, however, several will be movies that are just flawed or very bad in my opinion! [Eek!]

Let's start by asking:

1. Have you heard of it?
2. Have you seen it?
3. Are you interested in it now?

[Cool]

Here's our first masterpiece.. appropriately titled:

 -

Gotta love the tagline on the poster!

A series of brutal chainsaw murders plague a Boston college. Detectives are on the case, with the help of a local amateur sleuth. Despite their best efforts, the body count continues to pile up though.

"Pieces" stars Christopher George, Linda Day George, and Frank Brana.

 -

It was accompanied by a grisly ad campaign that promised "It's exactly what you think it is!" Infamous when it played theaters and it later became a cult classic due to video store rentals.

Never saw or heard of this one Valley...sounds kinda cool...Boston College...I'd watch it! Have you seen this?

Absolutely love it ! [Big Grin]

Filled to the max with gore, nudity and some really bad acting.

'You don't have to go to Texas for a chainsaw massacre'

I mean, who could resist that ?

An absolute classic ! (in its own right, that is)

I have indeed heard of "Pieces" because I saw it in a grindhouse back in the day. [Smile] It was the brainchild of the late, great exploitation genius D-i-c-k Randall, who produced such classic trash as "Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks" and "The Wild, Wild World of Jayne Mansfield." I believe that a lot of it was shot in Spain by director Juan Piquer Simon, with some exteriors shot in Boston to make it feel like an American film and not Eurotrash. (Randall was always involved in putting together these multi-national co-productions.)

As sleazy pieces of 80s gutter trash go, this one has it all--gore, nudity, pervasive sleaze (the chainsaw murder in a girls' locker room is particularly obnoxious), Euro-star Edmund Purdum, and Christopher and Lynda Day George, giving one of biggest female hambone performances that you'll ever see, slumming big time. (As I recall, this is the movie where cop Christopher George cooks himself a hot dog by using paperclips and a desk lamp. Don't try this at home, kids.) Compared to other slasher films from the era, I would put this in the same category (though definitely not as well made) as William Lustig's "Maniac"--uber-violent, fairly lacking in any redeeming social value, but pretty darned entertaining with lots of bad dialogue, goofiness, and anachronisms. (There is a flashback set in the 1940s where you see a touchtone telephone. Yeah, right!)

Adding yet another colorful story to this already colorful piece of cinema, the film was released in the U.S. by Edward L. Montoro's Film Ventures International, a notorious distributor of 80s drive-in and grindhouse stuff like "The Fifth Floor," "Grizzly," and "They Call Me Bruce." In the late 80s, Montoro, facing serious personal and financial problems, took $1 million from the FVI coffers and was never seen nor heard from again. Allegedly, he was spotted in Mexico...

"Pieces": a relic of a by-gone era. Am I interested in it now? I guess since I posted this. LOL [Smile]

Great responses to "Pieces" .. which I definitely recommend if you've never seen it. Can't quite say the same for this next forgotten flick:

 -

Three college age girls head off to a rock concert, only to end up knocked unconscious when their car crashes on a desolate country road during a thunderstorm. The girls wake to find themselves recovering in the isolated mansion of a spinster and her rather odd invalid mother. To make matters a tad more inconvenient, the mansion has no phone, and of course the storm has washed out all the roads.

 -

This movie is infamous for being banned in the UK.. no clue why though.  It has some gore, but nothing compared to a lot of slashers from the 80's.

Oh and Cindy .. each film that I post about on this thread will be a movie that I've watched at some point.. most likely in the 80's as a rental. [Cool]

Ok so i'm going to do my part on these two movies.....

1. nope, never heard of either movies
2. nope, never seen them
3. Maybe sorta interested....I'm a visual person I need screenshots....a trailer? how available are these to watch? are we talking only vhs?

Posted by Johnny Roarke is reckless (Member # 9826) on :

Believe it or not, but Pieces has been released on a region-free special edition double-disc in
2008 by US company Grindhouse Releasing, which included the co-operation of directer Juan Piquer Simon
who passed away last year.
Simon would go on to make Slugs a couple of years after Pieces.

Pieces was also released on a UK dvd just a couple of months ago by UK company Arrow Films,
with what looks to be the same restored transfer, but with completely different bonus-material
than its US counterpart.

By the way.. for those who have seen it or who are planning to see it.. does anyone else think
that the actor who plays the role of Willard (Paul Smith) looks almost exactly like Bud Spencer ?
Seriously, they could be twin brothers !

anybody remember the horror movie called the lamp aka the outing, i used to love this movie as a kid.

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Muffy .. I added a screenshot for each movie based on your suggestion. For the movie "Pieces" it was a difficult task because most of the best scenes include gratuitous nudity or a gory crime scene. [Eek!] Interested now? ha

And Johnny is all over the availability issues if you are interested in it. Overall though, several of these will be out-of-print and vhs might be the only option if you get intrigued by the comments enough.

Glad everyone is having fun and offering input!

So let's discuss the_wizard's request next:

 -

An ancient genie is released from a lamp when thieves ransack an old woman's house. They are killed and the lamp is moved to a museum to be studied. The curator's daughter is soon possessed by the genie and invites her friends to spend the night at the museum, along with some uninvited guests. The genie kills them off in an attempt to fulfill her ultimate wish.

 -

So "The Lamp aka The Outing" teaches us that if a genie grants you three wishes .. just be extremely careful with them please. Fun movie in my opinion.

pieces i never liked i'm afraid, found it so slow and boring but im surprised it gets good reveiws everywhere.

the lamp i love, has it all B movie fx, adventure, and good horror, great example of 80's B movie horror prob looks dated now but you have to love it.

great thread valley, pieces is completely bonkers and good fun if not taken seriously, never seen unhinged but read some pretty awful comments about it.
really enjoy the lamp, have a u.k vhs(slightly trimmed of gore) of it,a fun low budget horror.

my suggestions are
final terror aka campsite massace starring a young daryl hannah, rachel ward and adrian zmed

http://youtu.be/arzf21gwOo8 - final terror tv spot

sweet sixteen- decent early 80s slasher starring dana kimmel (friday the 13th part 3) and bo hopkins

last but not least early 80s canadian killer rat flick deadly eyes aka rats http://youtu.be/khywOKn-j6k - rats trailer,

i personally quite enjoyed this movie adaption of the james herbert novel.

Awesome suggestions warrior!

So let's go with this for our next choice:

 -

As warrior mentioned.. this early 80's slasher film actually has a recognizable cast in it with the likes of Rachel Ward (Night School), Darryl Hannah (Splash), Adrian Zmed (Bachelor Party), Mark Metcalf (Animal House), and Joe Pantoliano (The In Crowd).

 -

"The Final Terror" came out in 1983 and is about a group of young forest rangers who go on a weekend camping trip to a nearby forest campsite and end up being stalked by a crazy person in the woods.

Interesting titles here, never seen any of them.
The Final Terror was released in Finland on VHS but i think that the other films were banned.

warrior mentioned Sweet Sixteen which i have.
I´ll try to check it out this weekend.

Big renovation going on in our house and it´s driving me crazy [Smile]

from what i remember the final terror is way above average backwoods slasher movie with a much better cast than most of its like can normally muster.

not seen for a couple of year and the one person i did not recollect being in the cast was lewis smith who played bobby in the awesome 80s comedy heavenly kid.

it was directed by andrew davis who went on to direct code of silence with chuck norris, above the law and under siege with steven seagal as well as the fugitive and the 2002 arnie starrer colateral damage.

i've only watched this on the original thorn emi uk vhs tape release which suffered the same fate as many other slashers released at the time and that it was slightly trimmed by the bbfc of gory images,i think about 15-20 seconds in total.

they have done a uncut us dvd release but i've read the transfer is of appalling quality, worse than vhs, plus it's now hard to get hold of and sells for silly money.

link to the entire movie final terror - http://youtu.be/XMjfM9VBYrM .

Ronnie .. welcome to Fright Night.. ok.. not for real. But let's definitely have some fun! [Cool]

Here's one that fans of the movie "Trick or Treat" might wanna check out:

 - (click to watch movie)

Billy “Eye” Harper, the lead singer of this awesome hair metal band, goes crazy one night in the studio and begins to kill everyone he can find. The only one left standing at the end of the night is his former girlfriend Lynn Starling. She was able to escape his attacks, but just barely. Thanks to Lynn, Billy gets executed for his crimes and she goes on to become a successful lead singer herself. A few years later, while preparing to embark on a massive tour called 'Rocktober Blood', Billy returns for revenge and to finish the business he started. But is he real, or is Lynn slowly going insane?

 -

The best part of this crazy horror film was the band "Headmistress" which was actually the real-life rock band "Sorcery". Excellent tunes such as "Killer on the Loose", "I'm Back", and "Rainbow Eyes" are on display, but the best tune was at the end of the picture, "Watching You". Although I'm not a metal fan, I've gotta admit Sorcery are a blast in this movie.

 -

The final concert performance is legendary in horror circles.. It actually got the movie banned in Australia! Once again, not quite sure why?

It was cool to see a vintage pinball machine in the beginning and I must say Lynn Starling enjoyed her jacuzzis. [Big Grin]

Oh and the MVTV press junket for the tour was so cool.. the fashion at it was 80's awesome.

If you like your music heavy and your hair big .. you totally gotta watch this movie soon! ha [Eek!]

"When you least expect it .. I will attack."

just watched rocktober blood valley, was a very cheesy but entertaining slasher which has the requisite (for this genre anyway) amount of both gore and nudity.

some of the gore effects were bit on the tacky side, case for example the on stage beheading at the finale concert, looked completely fake but i suppose that just added to its cheesy charms.

the soundtrack was pretty good and made me think of another 80s slasher i have in my collection new years evil.

rocktober blood also reminds me of another early 80s slasher called terror on tour- http://youtu.be/PFxcGu7eqCo - link to entire movie, never seen this one but it's on my to watch list.

so overall i'd say rocktober blood is a fun slasher movie,it's far from being a classic but it's also a long way from being the worst of its type.

here's a couple more suggestions

he knows your alone - 1980 slasher starring a young tom hanks, slated by some critics as being a blatant halloween rip off, the atmospheric music does have some familiarities to carpenters halloween score , but i feel it's still a good music score in its own right and i must say i enjoyed this one quite a lot.

http://youtu.be/5KmSOye4pKs - trailer he knows your alone

deadly dreams from 1988, a bit of a nightmare elm street wannabe judging by its trailer - http://youtu.be/TT4TArvpSac . never seen this one.

warrior .. "Rocktober Blood" is definitely very low budget and totally agree about the effects.  No way would I consider it a classic.. just a crazy mess with a fun 80's vibe to it.

We've definitely discussed "He Knows You're Alone" a few times over the years because it is infamous for Tom Hanks first role and it is actually good!

So lets go with..

 -

Alex Torme (Mitchell Anderson) is having bad dreams. They usually start off the same: the memory of his parents being shot by a hunter named Perkins at Christmas time, followed by a new memory/nightmare of the same hunter trying to kill him. When Alex wakes up and it's hunting season with everyone around wearing the same wolf  mask as the killer.  Alex goes to see his brother Jack (Xander Berkeley) to talk it through with him. He obviously wants these nightmare images to just go away. His friend Danny (Thom Babbes) thinks that he just needs to calm down, until Danny ends up seeing the killer outside of Alex’s home too. However, it soon becomes apparent that the distinction between dream world and reality is blurred, and that these night terrors may not all be in Alex’s head. Alex soon befriends a girl by the name of Maggie (Juliette Cummins), and they attempt a relationship, while still trying to figure out Alex’s nightmares.

 -

I've seen "Deadly Dreams" a few times and while it has it's moments.. overall it is very slow paced.  It has elements of "A Nightmare On Elm Street" as warrior mentioned.

actually after posting my comment suggesting he knows your alone i thought to myself about the topic of the thread you had started - (lost) 80s horror and that he knows your alone was may be a bit to well known by most to be included .

where as the lamp, pieces, deadly dreams, rocktober blood, unhinged etc are that touch more obscure, yeh rocktober blood was actually pretty good fun overall, never boring and a million times better than some of the dreck i've seen over the years.

even though i've read quite a few negative reviews about deadly dreams i still want to see it,i think it's the front cover art that has me sold.

Warrior.. all the movies you've suggested are worthy entries and this thread has absolutely no rules.  Obscure for most folks is almost every movie we discuss on the Rewind.

So Ronnie finally watched "Heavenly Bodies" and she mentioned the fantastic performance by Cynthia Dale who is also so memorable from the underrated 80's slasher "My Bloody Valentine".  I even discussed on Muffy's HB thread that I kept waiting for "Heavenly Bodies" to turn into a slasher film.

So how about this forgotten one instead:

 -

"Killer Workout aka Aerobicide" takes place at Rhonda's Health Club where aerobics instructor Rhonda's business is thriving as her clients flock to her establishment to keep themselves in incredible shape. However, Rhonda suddenly finds her business under a huge threat when a brutal killer begins systematically murdering members of her aerobics class in a variety of ways.

 -

I totally remember watching this movie in the 80's.  My thought is "Death Spa" is the film with this combination of aerobics and horror slasher that most people remember, but for the obscure crowd it is this movie instead.

There is no comparing this film to the entertainment of "Heavenly Bodies", but if you are looking for a cheesy horror to add to your aerobics routine.. I recommend it for just the unique 80's tunes alone.

From what I've heard, except for a couple.. the tunes from this soundtrack are rather difficult to obtain:

Didi Nelson - Love Is a Four Letter Word

Jill COlucci - Woman on Fire

Robert Michaels & Lisa Duran - Knockout

Pebbles Phillips - Animal Workout

Sunny Hilden & Joe Steinman - Rock n' Rock

Donna De Lory - Only You Tonight

The Lost Playboy Club (I only read it for the articles) - Something to Feel

Fans?

Here's another obscure one for y'all :

Hide and Go Shriek (either 1987 or 1988)

A group of teens spend the night in a closed furniture store and get stalked by a wanna-be transvestite
with bloody murder on his mind.

With an obvious low budget and a cast of unknowns, this actually is a rather amusing slasher flick.
Quite similar to Chopping Mall, but where as that one was rather tongue-in-cheek, Hide and Go Shriek
is 100% dead serious.

Highlight of the movie : A naked girl gets decapitated by an elevator, and her head slowly
'drips' from her torso into the elevator where her friends are.

Any movie with such a scene can't be all that bad ! [Big Grin]

Get this one, if you can find it !

According to imdb, director Skip Schoolnik went on to be associate-producer of several well-known
tv-series such as Angel, The Walking Dead and Torchwood.

So you've watched "The Slumber Party Massacre Trilogy" and "The House On Sorority Row", but have you seen "Sorority House Massacre"?

Wait a second.. is that the girl with the exploding head from "Chopping Mall" on movie poster? ha. she isn't even in the movie! I actually think it is Nicole Rio who played Tracy in the movie, but i remember reading it was Suzee Slater a long time ago.

Well, something seems hauntingly familiar to Beth when she arrives at the Sorority House for a fun weekend with her girlfriends, to the point that Beth's fun weekend is plagued by a series of horrific nightmares each one more real than the last. When the girls throw an all night party they discover a most unwelcome guest, the nightmare maker, a night of fun has become a night of horror as the blood thirsty killer stalks them one by one.

Warning: "Sorority House Massacre" is a bit too tame for most gore loving 80's horror fans.. it is actually a take on "Slumber Party Massacre" with the added twist of dreams.

 -

Cause Beth spends a lot of time dreaming, talking about them, and trying to figure them out. Some folks call this film a "Halloween" ripoff, but with a couple of glaring differences. The killer wears Nikes and Ocean Pacific t-shirts -- (not Quiksilver.. Whew!).

Bonus points.. there's a lengthy montage in which the girls try on clothes while dancing to an almost Hall & Oates tune. The director wanted "You Make My Dreams" .. Come True, but the budget got this other masterpiece instead. [Wink]

 -

I mean what could possibly go wrong with these studs coming over to protect you?

I'm actually not totally recommending this film, just having fun with the slumber party massacre idea! Dangerous stuff ya know.

There are actually two versions of Sorority House Massacre. The US dvd version is indeed
practically gore-free.

Here's what the DVD Delirium book wrote about it :
,The New Concorde "Massacre Collection" dvd is devoid of at least seven sequences of varying length
that total almost 10 minutes of missing footage.'

The complete version should have a running-time of somewhere close to 86 minutes.
Apparently the old video release from the UK as released by video-company Medusa is the full uncut version.

Maybe Young Warrior has it in his collection somewhere and can help us out here.

The sequel (from '91) is also worth a look. It's rather amusing actually. It was directed by
Jim Wynorski around the same time as he did Hard To Die, using many of the same cast from that one.

never seen the u.k medusa video release, but like most medusa releases (retribution, the video dead, lightblast, etc.) at the time it has some pretty cool artwork .

i quite enjoyed this one, doesn't come close to the first slumber party massacre for me but i still found it enjoyable enough, plus i also liked the music score.

Sadly no, Valley, I have not seen Sorority House Massacre. I have it saved to Netflix, in case it ever comes out.

This afternoon I watched Slaughter High. It wasn't the best slasher film I've ever seen, but it certainly wasn't the worst. I thought the acting was pretty horrible, and the plot was predictable and cliche, but it was a fun movie to watch.

I have Cheerleader Camp coming up in my Netflix que...any thoughts??

first time i watched slaughter high many years back on a cut vestron uk video i came away hating it,i rented it a couple of months back on the excellent new uk arrow dvd release to give it another chance and i ended up really liking it,to the point i went and purchased it.

negatives - most of the acting is very poor and the plot has been recycled more than its fair share of times .

positives- some quite gruesome kill scenes, great music score ,martys cool looking jester mask and the creepy old school setting.

http://youtu.be/Ff2Tj2R471M - slaughter high aka april fools day theme music

yeh overall i really enjoyed slaughter high this time around but i must admit when it comes to 80s slashers in general i'm quite easily pleased,i know a few people out there that think it's a complete stinker.

as for cheerleader camp i have the anchorbay dvd and even though it's as daft as they come it's still quite good fun,has some pretty gruesome death scenes, lots of bad acting and quite a smattering of nudity.

give it a go pettyfan, there's way worst 80s slasher/horror movies out there.

I make no excuses for this flick.. it is definitely campy horror.  The cast with Betsy Russell, Lucinda Dlckey, and Lorie Griffin is 80's awesome and the movie has some of the best b-movie make-up special effects ever.

The guys are the weakness of the film.. Leif Garrett is just going through the motions and Travis McKenna is totally annoying at times. It could have been really good, but they went for cheesy sleazy instead. Still worth checking out though.

If you end up becoming a fan of "Cheerleader Camp" .. then you need to track this one down next:

 -

"Camp Fear" is the infamous sequel to "Cheerleader Camp"! So very bad and the story behind it is crazy. But fun to watch once because of Betsy Russell and Vince Van Patten.

pettyfan .. this will sound crazy, but I actually just talked Ronnie into watching "Nightmare Beach" .. aka "Welcome To Spring Break" last night. So your posting was kinda coincidental to read.

 -

I'm a huge fan of "Nightmare Beach".. from the obscure tunes to the killer twist on Spring Break. It is definitely a B movie, but very high on my list of forgotten horror gems. The theme music of the killer and the kills themselves are rather creative .. I highly recommend this film.

Plus, it is fun to see all the 80's beach fashion which I miss!

 -

If you've never seen it .. here's my Skip Tip on it: Diablo is a biker gang leader executed for the murder of a young woman. At the same time, it's also Spring Break in Florida and the partying has begun. Football players Skip and Ronnie head to the beach, where Skip meets Gail, the sister of the woman who was murdered. All the fun and glory of Spring Break is on display, however, is about to turn into a nightmare when it appears Diablo has come back from the dead to seek his revenge.

 -

Finally, check out the performance by Zeta in the film!

Ah, Umberto Lenzi disguised many of his later movies as American productions, as is the case
with Welcome To Spring Break.
He did Hitcher in the Dark around the same time as this one, and used many of the same locations
(and even some of the same scenes).

Thanks. Reviews on Netflix were mixed. I don't mind B movies, if they're good B movies...does that make sense? [Wink]

http://youtu.be/4H1yC42ImKA - after midnight trailer.

I have that dvd too. It's been a while since i've seen it, but i remember there's a Cujo-esque segment
about a group of girls in a car besieged by some aggressive dogs. It's simple, but very effective.

yeh i could remember parts of that segment johnny and also the other one where they stop at the creepy old house, but i had to just look up again on imdb to remember the other section and that was the one about the night time radio presenter getting creepy phone calls.

yeh it's not overly memorable,it wasn't that long ago i watched it last, but it's a good fun movie never the less.
i'll have to grab it of my shelf again for another viewing.

i've never seen nightmare beach,i'm interested in watching this one,it looks and sounds like quite a fun horror flick, plus it's got the great john saxon and michael parks in it.

few more suggestions
 -
hell high aka raging fury (as it was known here in the u.k) - this was filmed in 1986 but not released till 89 , i've read some awful reviews on this one but i quite enjoyed it.

the mostly unknown cast give decent enough performances plus it gives the audience what it expects from this type of film namely copious amounts of gore and nudity,it has quite a sleazy feel to it this one.

another thing of note is the actor christopher stryker who plays the gang leader ****ens died not long after the completion of the film aged just 27 from aids.

blood relations (1988)-

superstition(1982) aka the witch - saw this years back but remember very little.

nightmare maker(1981) aka butcher, baker, nightmare maker - never seen this one.

I actually really enjoyed Welcome To Spring Break! [Smile] Thanks Valley. You knew I would like it.

Of course, the blonde QB guy was great.. the music was cool and I loved the atmosphere of the movie.
Very B-flick-ish, and still fun.

petty, sorry you didn't enjoy it. I really thought you would..

Cheerleader Camp....oh what to say about it?? The first disc I got from Netflix was cracked (this shoulda been a sign lol). So I had to wait for the other one to come from Raleigh, NC, which took several days. Again, shoulda been a sign.

What to say, what to say? The pluses: at least the chubby guy who was always videotaping stuff (Timmy??)gave some comic relief on occasion. It was cool seeing the Esleep pajama tops...I had one of those back in the day! The camp director was soooooo annoying! I never did quite figure out what was wrong with the Betsy Russell character. Was she just crazy?

Anyhoo, I had the killer figured out pretty quickly. IDK if I can sit thru Camp Fear or not. Anyone wanna give some spoilers??

Compared to Camp Fear, Cheerleader Camp is a bonafide masterpiece of the horror genre..

Rawhead Rex (1986)

Ireland will never be the same after Rawhead Rex, a particularly nasty demon, is released from his underground prison by an unwitting farmer. The film follows Rex's cross country rampage, while a man struggles to stop it. --IMDb

 -

A cheesy monster movie based on a Clive Barker short story. Worth watching at least once -- if only to laugh your head off.

The scene with the priest being "baptised" is particularly funny.

A few random shots:

Rawhead Rex is on youtube, if anybody wants to watch it.

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

J2ME .. those flashing images from "Rawhead Rex" are great! [Smile]

Here's another lost one, and some will say for good reason:

 -

Someone is going around brutally murdering fashion models. The only connection between the victims seems to be that they have all had pictures taken by the same photographer at the same photo studio.

 -

As the dead bodies continue to pile up the police cant help but wonder if someone who works at the studio is responsible for the murders. Is it the guy that owns the studio, his weird business partner, the angry delivery girl who seems to hate every other human being on the planet, or someone entirely different who just has some sort of grudge in general against models?

 -

Actually "Night Ripper" is short on gore and quite the low budget stalker. It is probably best remembered for the creepy mannequins scenes..

but wait ..

 -

Is that Donovan Leitch still hiding behind the water cooler from "Cutting Class"? [Wink] [Big Grin]

Under-the-radar dvd releases from a few months back :

- Dreamaniac (1986) trailer : www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SzFnIVmLaY

- Mutant Hunt (1987) from the director of Breeders !
trailer : www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dASmpkit60

Don't expect much when it comes to picture-quality.. these movies still look about the same
as they always did. (on VHS that is)

Also released in the same collection is Necropolis (1987), but avoid this disc at all costs :
for most part of the movie the audio is out of sync with the picture.

Haha, just watched Dreamaniac and Mutant Hunt trailers.
Fun C-grade stuff [Cool]

I own Breeders on dvd and Necropolis on VHS. Weird and fun flicks.

First slasher film made for the home market back in the day..... and it's about as much of a "b" movie as humanly possible! Worth a watch just to see how far we've come.

Antropophagus (1980)

I really enjoyed this. Mixes slasher, cannibal, and gore elements well. A little slow in the middle, but the creppy feeling holds up.

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Spreadking .. "Antropophagus" should almost come with warning labels for it's shocking gore. But definitely a bit slow and it crosses the line of disturbing with one of the kill scenes too.

Saw the uncut version .. [Eek!]

I truly thought this one was gonna be a cool little find from me .. but totally got mixed reviews on my recommendation.

But here you go..

"Nightwish" is about a group of college students who follow their professor to a secluded old mansion that's supposedly home to some paranormal activity. The students are their to observe and document the events that occur in hopes of proving the existence of ghosts or the supernatural in general. However, they begin to question the intentions of their eccentric professor when he decides to put the students through a series of dangerous tests.

 -

"Nightwish" stars Clayton Rohner, Elizabeth Kaitan (Friday the 13th VII), Brian Thompson (Miracle Mile), Jack Starrett (First Blood), and my fav from this film Alisha Das.

 -

Most people give "Nightwish" credit for originality, but it is a very obscure 80's movie that has recently become available on Netflix Instant watch. The beginning of the film deals with dream research and more specifically researching subjects that envision dying in their dreams. Kinda creepy I know, however that is just the beginning of this wild ride.

Speaking of wild rides .. just the adventure to the spooky Sccoby Doo like mansion with Brian Thompson mugging as he drives the students to their destination was scary enough for me.

 -

But wait, is that girl naked? Maybe, I'll keep watching just to see if it gets any scarier. [Wink]

Despite Ronnie not being a huge fan of "Nightwish" after I talked her into watching it (I thought she'd dig it for Bruno X) .. I still want to mention "Nightwish" for anyone that has 1 hour and 36 minutes they aren't afraid to waste some late night! [Big Grin]

never seen nightwish valley,i wouldn't mind checking it out, seems to have a pretty decent cast what with clayton rohner and cobra's brian thompson.

very hard to come about here in the u.k,it's never had a dvd release as far as i know and the now deleted vhs goes for a hefty price.

Yeah, Nighwish looks pretty cool.
IMDb says it´s a 1990 film and someone put the Finnish band live dvd cover art there [Cool]

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

"Nightwish" was released in a few theaters in Europe back in 1989 .. it didn't do well .. and it only got a video release in in the USA in 1990. I think that is where the IMDb date might have come from.

Hope you guys get a chance to check it out sometime. No masterpiece, but the cast is great.

Once again there is a hard to find 'uncut' version of it as well.

Val, Nightwish was tough to watch.. the quality was so bad..perhaps it would make a difference if the picture and sound had been better? Hmm...

Pyro mentioned a movie in another thread..."Deadly Blessing"... I wonder if it's any good.

Ronnie .. Funny you should mention "Deadly Blessing" .. I watched it last week. I remembered it being creepy.. especially the bath tub scene. However, I really struggled to get into it. Neat to see Sharon Stone in a different kind of movie, but I was disappointed in Lisa Hartman's role.

It was directed by Wes Craven which is a plus.

Honestly, unless you're a real hardcore fan of these kind of cheesy old 80's horror flicks, this one might be kinda hard to get into. True it is interesting to see Sharon Stone in this film as young as she is. But still, from a general standpoint, I don't think it's aged too well. I would still say give it a watch though just to see for yourself..you may end up liking it.

"I Saw What You Did' was actually a 1988 tv movie that was a remake of the Joan Crawford film from the 60's with the same title.

 -

The 1988 version starred Shawnee Smith and Tammy Lauren as two teens, Lisa and Kim, who for kicks begin making prank calls seductively saying "I saw what you did!". But when they randomly call a guy chosen out of the phonebook named Adrian Lancer, the prank goes very bad. You see Adrian has just killed someone and now he thinks they actually saw him do it.

It's all fun and games Lisa and Kim.. until you mistakenly stalk a deranged killer!

 -

This was a very good rather unknown thriller.

Why you should watch it..

Great to see Robert Carradine in a different type of role and kinda cool that David Carradine played his brother in the movie.

The director was Fred Walton who also directed the films "When A Stranger Calls" and "April Fool's Day".

The little sister that starts the idea of prank calls is Candance Cameron who you might remember as Cindy Nelson from "Some Kind of Wonderful".

This movie actually won an Emmy for Cinematography.

Hey.. this is the lost horror thread .. you expected better reasons? [Big Grin]

i know it's a made for tv movie but here in the u.k when it was originally released to vhs by cic/universal it was rated 18.

this is definitely a lost horror valley, never seen it but would like to, trouble is it seems more or less impossible to come about here in the u.k.

that is unless your willing to part with a fair amount of your hard earned, about £30 pounds ($45 - 48 dollars) on amazon uk when i last looked.

great cast with the blob's shawnee smith and the carradine brother's robert & david, plus it's directed by fred walton who made the really fun april fools day make this one i would really like to get my hands on.

Cheerleader Camp, with Betsy Russell... that does look good. Going back to the first post, with the random hotdog cooking scene, isn't that from The Exterminator? Another ultra violent early 80s shocker.

If you want a really creepy and unsettling film from back then, that's fairly off the radar now, check this out:

i watched this 1988 horror - the unholy when it first came out but can remember very little from it,though i do remember laughing at some demon creature that pops up at the end.

anyone else seen it,was it any good?

I have it on a UK dvd from Columbia Pictures.

It's been a while since i've seen it, but i remember i quite liked it.
It tried to move away from the teen-horror so popular in the 80's and do something more serious.

Watching it today it's kinda hampered by its 80's look and fashion, but it's not bad.. not at all.
