On Twitter, I follow a guy that writes mostly about sports but is a pop culture GURU as well named Bill Simmons. He is the creator of Grantland.com as well as the producer of ESPN's 30 for 30 series of documentaries.
Well, reading this as well as hoping that Eddie does well in Tower Heist, I was wondering what are the best Eddie Murphy Movies in the opinion of the Board? What movies might be over/underrated? No one here forgets how funny he is, but I think we just want to remember him as amazing, and not the same anymore (AKA Chevy Chase - National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation --> Community)
Any thoughts?

Good article. Eddie Murphy, like a lot of great 80's actors, struggled through the 90's and his career priorities seemed to change sometime after Beverly Hills Cop 3. We can't really blame him for wanting to make more family orientated films and do some animation voice overs. But it'd be fair to say that 80's Eddie Murphy fans will have little in common with the audience that discovered him in the mid 90's and beyond.
There were occasionally nods to old school Murphy performances with 'Bowfinger' the underrated 'Life' and the not so bad 'I Spy' but all too brief reminders of the great comedian of yesteryear.

That was a good article. It's no doubt Eddie did make a huge impact on the whole realm of comedy in general during his breakthrough days on SNL...and it is true few, or next to none, have had that kind of success.
Anyway...
My personal picks for best Eddie Murphy films goes something like this:

The first time i saw Eddie on screen was in 1984 when i watched Beverly Hills Cop in a theater. That was just fantastic!
Never seen his SNL stuff.
I have all his 80s movies except Delirious and Best Defense. Never seen them but iīm gonna get the dvdīs soon. I donīt care if Best Defense sucks, i just have to see it.
I also own all his 90s flicks up to Vampire in Brooklyn. After that i lost interest. I remember liking Bowfinger though.
Eddie is a true 80s legend and i will always cherish his 80s stuff.

Strangely, looking at his list of credits on IMDB, he was certainly someone who peaked very early on.
My top 5 (no particular order):

1. 48 hours 2. trading places 3. beverley hills cop 4. coming to america 5. another 48 hours - i know it gets slated and it's basically a rehash of the more superior original but there's still a lot here to enjoy,plus i had the added bonus of watching it in the theatre.
don't dislike some of his other stuff -golden child,beverley hills cop 2, life,metro,bowfinger ,but can not bring myself to watch daddy day care or any of his other family friendly comedies.
i much prefer the funny foul mouthed eddie of old compared to the kid friendly version we have now !

I do like Eddie Murphy but mainly only like Trading Places and Coming to America. I absolutely love these films. Delirious was hilarious at the time and did not think RAW was up to par.
The 48 hours movies and Beverly Hills cop movies are average and the rest of his movies suck.
BTW, I love ESPN's 30 for 30. Have seen a fair few of them so far. I think my favourite one was on Marcus Dupree - The Best That Never Was.

My favorite Eddie Murphy isn't his movies, it's his Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood skits on SNL. Those things are hilarious, especially the Christmas episode. The "Cabbage" Patch dolls are hilarious!

Eddie Murphy jumped the shark many years ago. He totally lost his edge and now makes movies for kids. Whatever. I still have my fave dvds from the glory years.....

I think for him to get his edge back he needs to get back on a stage in a small comedy club and rediscover his roots. (Kind of like the plot of Rocky III!)

Watched RAW (1987) again and itīs still very funny. Love the theme tune and the various relationship jokes.
Now i need to watch few Richard Pryor stand-up films.
