The blu-ray version of David Lynch's Blue Velvet was released here last month, and will be released in the US on november 8th. The movie had been released before in several editions, including a very good special edition dvd several years ago. So what about this new blu-ray.. is it worth the upgrade ? Well, yeah ! and one of the main reasons it is, is because of the newly discovered 51 minutes of deleted scenes. This footage does not come from a workprint or doesn't have any timecoding or anything, but is completely finished footage presented here in great quality anamorphic widescreen / 24p ! There is surprisingly little Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper footage), but what we get focuses mainly on Jeffrey Beaumont's character, his home-situation, and his three relationships :
- His far from perfect relationship with his girlfriend. (completely cut from the version as it was originally released). - His friendship and blooming romance with Sandy (Laura Dern). - And finally his fascination with Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) including a truly memorable scene which takes place in her appartement and later on the roof of her appartement-building, and features a variation of that Mysteries of Love theme-song.
Really amazing stuff, and the best bonus feature a David Lynch fan could have dreamed of ! Probably cut from the movie because of pacing reasons or a run-time of close to three hours.
All the extra's from the previous special edition dvd are on the blu-ray as well, including the 70 minutes Mysteries of Love documentary.
I just thought i'd let you all know.

Thanks, JRiR. This is one of my favorite movies ever and certainly my favorite from the 80s. The only thing bad about this news is that I have to buy yet another copy of this!

Crash.. yeah, i know what you mean. I made the upgrade to blu-ray not too long ago, and i promised myself not to buy the same movies i already have on dvd all over again. But over 50% of the blu-rays i bought so far are the same as what i already have on dvd.. Go figure
Still, when it comes to Blue Velvet, it was definitely worth it. Hell, i would have bought the disc if the deleted footage was the only thing on it ! It's great to see so much never before seen scenes from a movie i love so much, and what could easily be considered one of the all-time greats in movie history ! I wonder what the movie would look like if they placed all these scenes back in. On the other hand i think it's good they didn't do that, because the film is perfect the way they released it. Nevertheless, these new scenes deserve to be seen, and it's great to have them all restored in great quality.
If anyone sees it (or already have seen it), please let me know. I'm very curious what you guys (and girls) think of it.
