you could make arguments for alot of actors work in this time period but i would have to say the powerhouses of this decade were

Tom Hanks
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Eddie Murphy

i think the majority of these guys best work come out of this decade

please share your opinions of who you thought dominated this decade with great movies.

I think Sly did better than Arnie...

Rambo 1,2,3, Rocky 3,4, Cobra, Over The Top, Tango And Cash etc.

VS

Conan, Terminator, Commando, Predator, Red Heat etc.

In terms of sheer output and box office revenue, I think Sly was one of the biggest stars of the 80's!

Kurt Russell: Big Trouble, The Thing, Tango & Cash, Overboard, Used Cars, Escape From New York... Tequila Sunrise and Mean Season weren't bad either.

Harrison Ford : Star Wars Empire my personel fav., and IV, Indy trilogy, Bladerunner, Witness, Frantic, Presumed Innocent.

All nice suggestions but it´s pretty obvious that Eddie Deezen ruled the 80s.

Midnight Madness, Grease 2, Zapped!, WarGames, Surf 2, The Whoopee Boys, Beverly Hills Vamp etc.

Who, me?

Joking? Please, no jokes when we are talking about Eddie Deezen.

Ok, time to get serious.
Schwarzenegger was the king in the 80s.

Arnold Schwarzenegger did well in the 80's and held on through the 90's and was the most bankable actor during those decades.

Stallone did well in the 80's but dwindled as time passed. Just recently trying to jump start his career.

Tom Hanks broke into stardom in the 80's but did exceptionally well in the 90's and continues to make theatrically released films

Harrison Ford was a versatile actor and did well through 3 decades 70's/80's/90's. Very much like Michael Douglas.

Eddie Murphy was another 80's hit but dwindled as time passed and made more family friendly films. By far the most profitable SNL alumni to make films.

You know James Woods did pretty well too.

i wasnt thinking in terms of box office hits, more like the amount of really likeable movies that each actor has. in my opinion tom hanks 80's stuff was boss.

you could make a case for michael j fox, popular tv show, the back to the future movies, teen wolf

now garcia you know 10% of that goes to the house... ah youth

Posted by Jack Gannon (Member # 9144) on :

I Think that 1990 should be counted as the 80's so Total Recall can go toward Arnold's list.

And The Bonfire of the Vanities, and Joe Versus the Volcano can go toward Tom Hanks.

So in my book Hanks would have.

1. Splash
2. Bachelor Party
3. Big
4. Man with one Red Shoe
5. Volunteers
6. Money Pit
7. Dragnet
8. Turner & Hooch
9. Joe Versus the Volcano
10 Bonfires
11. and finally one of my two fav flims of all time the Burbs.

Where as Schwarzengger

1. Conan the Barbarian the other fav of all time
2. Conan the Destroyer not bad
3. Red Sonja though it's been awhile
4. Commando
5. Raw Deal
6. Predator
7. Running Man
8. Red Heat
9. The Terminator
10. Twins
11. Total Recall

Unless I missed one it seems they are tied for me.

Bamersy that's funny I was thinking of putting Quaid down myself Innerspace and Enemy Mine are two of my favorites.

I used to really like Enemy Mine. Quaid was big in the 80's. I love Randy a lot too.

Lomax why do you say used to like, you don't like Enemey Mine anymore?

Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :

Jack, I just meant that I have not seen it in a long time but liked it a lot when I have watched it. I guess I didn't word my post very well.

I will have to track it down again. Usually once I like a movie it stays with me.

This is a movie I saw on TV in the late 80's and then I completely forgot the name of it, and it eluded me up until the late 90's and caught it playing on cable. I vowed never to forget the title again. It's very difficult to track a movie down when you don't know the title and don't have the internet.

Blasphemy!

Ok, are we talking box-office or just good movies? Because box-office can be measured, but lists of good movies become subjective and this could go on for a while. Besides, almost every 'good' 80's actor has at least 2 movies people love.

I think Harrison Ford was the biggest box-office actor in the 80's. Arnie was bigger on the crossover from the late 80's - early 90's, but I think Ford still wins for the 80's.

Posted by Jack Gannon (Member # 9144) on :

Lomax I agree with you, I always hate it when I see a fragment of a movie which catches my attention and then the movie is gone, no title to go on, no characters just an image. Years later you watch it and say that looks familiar, but is that what I saw or not? It disapears into your hazy memories, the more you try to recall it your brain begins making stuff up to compensate for the lack of details and then you end up not being able to recall it when you see it, because you've made it into somthing else.

It's like this nintendo game I played when I was younger, no matter how many games I see the cover of or watch a playthrough on youtube I can't find out what it was.

Posted by The Good Package (Member # 9492) on :

logan, its not based off of box office success, its the amount of likeable movies

big trouble in little china was not a box office hit but i would count that in favor of kurt russell. as well as overboard i like that one alot too.

Try me out, Jack, im a retro gamer [Smile]

Are we talking nes or snes?

Posted by Jack Gannon (Member # 9144) on :

Thank you Jay Lee, I think it was Nes though I might be mistake. It seems like the game closest to my memory is Astyanax. But when I watch the gameplay it doesn't quite seem right.

I remember a knight armed with a sword, trying to rescue his woman from an evil monster. And there being alot of cutscenes similar to Astyanax. It seems like I remember one of the monsters being a large green beast who broke through a wall. In my memory the graphics seemed more like SNES. I think I remember that when I rented it, Bram Stoker's Dracula had just come out to video, and the video store clerck was playing it on the television. So it could have been 1993, not sure when SNES came out.

Posted by Jack Gannon (Member # 9144) on :

I also think that I might be mixing Astyanax, Stryder and others together in my memory.

Posted by Jack Gannon (Member # 9144) on :

Also on Astyanax, there is a boss who seems familiar. A large grey beast with a pink head.

Posted by JAY LEE (Member # 6345) on :

Ok, im mostly versed in snes. And it came out in '91, but they continued to crank out nes games for about two years or so after. Man there were alot of those fantasy/knight/medieval games out for both??? [Confused]

Posted by Jack Gannon (Member # 9144) on :

Yeah, I know. And it seems no matter how many playthroughs I watch on Youtube I can't find anything that quite looks like what I remember.

2 pages and no mention of Tom Cruise yet? I'll admit he's lost his rocker in the past decade and hasn't made any good movies recently, but in the '80s and '90s he did some great work. Here's a quick sampling of his '80s output to give an idea of how much range he had as an actor:

Taps (1981)
The Outsiders (1983)
Risky Business (1983)
All the Right Moves (1983)
Top Gun (1986)
The Color of Money (1986)
Cocktail (1988)
Rain Man (1988)
Born on the Fourth of July (1989)
Days of Thunder (1990 - counts as an '80s movie in my book since it was filmed in 1989).

If you like Into The Night that's great.

Films are art and are definitely either more or less aesthetically pleasing from person to person, so it's all cool, but I just can't get into the movie. I couldn't even sit all the way through it.

I will say that Michelle Pfeiffer is one of the most gorgeous ladies I have ever seen. Her eyes are magnificent. She was kinda anorexic in Scarface though.

Danny Devito

1981: Going Ape!
1983: Terms of Endearment
1984: Romancing the Stone
1984: The Ratings Game
1984: Johnny Dangerously
1985: The Jewel of the Nile
1985: Head Office
1986: Wise Guys
1986: Ruthless People
1986: My Little Pony: The Movie (Voice)
1987: Tin Men
1987: Throw Momma From the Train
1988: Twins
1989: The War of the Roses

Danny Devito might not be on the same level of greatness as the Big Guns of the 80's like Bill Murray, Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox...ect. But he was still one of my favorites in the 80's regardless.

I started that thread quite awhile ago. I'm glad to see fellow Rewinders showing interest in the idea of an '80s video game forum. Besides discussing '80s arcade and home console video games, we could also talk about the arcades, home consoles, people, and other topics related to video games in the '80s.

Sorry for not posting more lately. Been overwhelmed with finals for college but will be finished after this week. It'll be nice to get back to chatting with fellow Rewinders on a regular basis.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. There are tons of great picks already named by posters here. But what about the character actors of the '80s? You know, the actors and actresses who you always recognized and said "Hey, I've seen him/her before, but can't put my finger on his/her name." IMDb has made it a lot easier for us to ID character actors, but in the pre-Internet days it was more fun hunting down information on the familiar faces of movies whose names we didn't know right away.

I'd like to nominate John Vernon (Dean Wormer from Animal House) as a quintessential '80s character actor who did well in terms of screen exposure. You could always count on him to play some kind of crooked authority, academic, or law enforcement figure. Some of his more memorable work from the '80s includes:

Airplane II: The Sequel (1982)
Curtains (1983)
Chained Heat (1983)
Savage Streets (1984)
Fraternity Vacation (1985)
Doin' Time (1985)
Ernest Goes to Camp (1987)
Blue Monkey (1987)
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988)

Add to this Vernon's countless appearances on TV shows like The Greatest American Hero, CHiPs, The A-Team, T.J. Hooker, and Airwolf, and you can see why he carved out a niche as one of the '80s' most recognizable faces. Sure, John Vernon may not have ever been a star on the level of Sylvester Stallone or Eddie Murphy, but his prolificity makes him worthy of mentioning in this thread.

Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :

His daughter is very nice too in movies like Pretty in Pink. She is smokin' hot.

I'd say Ed Lauter probably matches him for playing the crooked character in 80's movies.

Opinions on the films themselves may differ, but both Charles Bronson and Chuck Norris starred in
some very profitable movies during the 80's..
their 80's output was very succesful on video for
years to come, and on the long term were some of
the biggest money-makers for (mostly) The Cannon
Group.

So many to choose from. I think I would pick Arnold Schwartzeneger in a close race with

Tom Cruise (add to the movie list earlier LOSIN IT & Endless Love which I think was his 1st movie. IMO Arnold had more movies I liked but Cruise was absolutely HUGE I think most would agree.

Eddie Murphy
SNL
Delirious
Raw
Coming to America
Trading Places
Beverly hills cop
Bev hils cop 2
48 HRS
Another 48 hours
Golden Child

I must CHEVY CHASE, maybe not the best but definitely worth mentioning.
Modern Problems
Under the Rainbow
Seems Like Old Times
Caddyshack
Vaction
Euro Vacation
Xmas Vacation
Funny Farm
Deal of the Century
Fletch
Fletch Lives
Thats all I could think of off the top of my head I am sure I left some good flicks out.
