"But when I marry, I want the woman to love me for who I am, not because of what I am. "
So I woke up this morning to the Royal Wedding on tv... at the very moment that they said their vows to each other. I didn't have much interest in the whole craziness surrounding the event.. but it is was kinda cool to see the magnitude of it all. But as an 80's fan .. the only thing that kept running through my mind was:
This Royal Wedding looks cool and all, but it just doesn't compare to the extravaganza that I remember from the movie that set the standard "Coming To America". ha.. So I dug out my old VHS tape and watched it until I had to leave for work. And I must say.. that the wedding at the end of "Coming To America" was just 'awesome' as 'awesome' gets ya know.
And what about her wedding dress?
So not much discussion on the Rewind over the years about "Coming To America" and I haven't watched in awhile myself.. but I totally recommend after the snippet of the wedding I watched today. As for the movie itself.. Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall were impressive in multiple roles, but the cameo of "Trading Places" duo of Randolph and Mortimer Duke as street bums was a genius move and has always been a lasting memory. And it is hilarious to see ER's Eriq La Salle as Murphy's rival for Lisa .. Daryl Jenks.
So let's use this thread to discuss Coming To America and The Royal Wedding happening today. Is anyone watching or even interested in either?
Actually.. let's just use this thread to 'discuss' ..

"Get you royal engagement t-shirts!"
Man, I can't begin to tell you how much I love this movie. It is so good and also one of my mum's favourites along with Trading Places.
A very quotable movie. For example James Earl Jone: King Jaffe Joffer says, "I tied my own shoes once, it was an overrated experience." I often say about certain things, that it was an overrated/underrated experience depending on the scenario.
I personally am not into The Royal Wedding but my mum is as she lived in England when Prince Charles and Princess Diana were married back around when I was born in 1981.
"America is great indeed. Imagine a country so free, one can throw glass on the street."
"This is some real fly personal hygiene equipment here and I got this hell of hair dryer here, check it out."
Hey Valley on a side note: I went to buy a video game today for my PS3 (Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters), and I noticed at the entrance to the mall there is a female sporting goods store called Valleygirl (One word). I was actually going to take a photo of the store and post it up here for ya, but there were a lot of kids around and I thought someone might think that I was taking a photo of them, which probably wouldn't have gone down too well.

Devolution here,
Eddie Murphy's last truly great movie. Another 48 hrs might contest also, but everyone I know quote this movie.
"In the Face!!!"
"They got the Big Mac, we got the Big Mic."
Best story ever, I have a kid in my class at the College of Staten Island named Akeem, and when I asked him if he was named after the Basketball Player, Akeem Olajuwon, he said "No, I'm named after the Prince in Coming to America."
I then fell on the floor claiming his parents to be the coolest people ever.
We are DEVO
Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :
Ask the kid if he is a fan of The Giants of New York and The Packers of Green Bay.
Dude, if that kid was in my class he would never hear the end of the Coming to America quotes.
I love how in the movie Darrel appears to be barracking for both teams at the basketball.
DEVO: as a 12 year old kid I had the Houston Rockets, red Olajuwon number 34 basketball singlet.

Now buying your wedding dress at a store called Valleygirl .. that would be cool. I posted this pic somewhere when I was discussing stores for my new vision of The Sherman Oaks Galleria. Unfortunately, the chain that is based out of Australia has no relations to the movie or the Zappa tune. But my store totally would.
Actually, my plan is to rename all the stores in the 'new' Sherman Oaks Galleria with 80's movie names.
Devo.. that is great story about the kid in your class!

Yes that is definitely the store. That last part BTW is a great idea for a thread.
You could have like a Mike Damone store, that sells all kinds of sleazy stuff, like strange outfits and different waxes and lotions.
I would love to go to the states one day and spend heaps of time going to movie locations. It would be so cool. I reckon as a first port of call, I would scout the John Hughes locations.
Anyway back to the topic:
"Now what the f.... do you want?"
"We desire a room."
"You better not be wastin my time, you got money?"
Money clip
"Well come on in gentlemen."
Frankie Faison definitely adds to the movie in a very positive way. He has got some great lines.
"What is this?"
"It's a photograph." - I still pack up when I here this.

I rolled out of bed at 4:00am to watch the Royal Wedding, and I thought it turned out to be beautiful! Kate's dress was amazing, and overall the wedding was perfect besides Princess Di not being there
Oh, and I do love Coming to America too. What was that Jerry curl stuff in it? I can't remember what it was called but remember it being hilarious

Soul Glo. It's a great scene when Darryl's family leave stains on Mr McDowell's couch from the excessive amount of product they use.

Every time I think of this movie, I automatically think of the Soul Glo and the remainders left on Mr. McDowell's couch!

Rev. Brown: [at Black Awareness Rally] But you know, when I look at these contestants! For the Miss Black Awareness Pageant, I feel good! I feel good, because I know there's a God somewhere! There's a God somewhere! Turn around ladies for me please! You know there's a God who sits on high and looks down low! Man cannot make it like this! Larry Flynt! Hugh Hefner! They can take the picture, but you can't make it! Only God above, the Hugh Hefner on high, can make it for ya!
Semmi: [in audience to Akeem] Apparently these are the best women Queens has to offer. Pick one and let's go home.
Prince Akeem: Be patient, my friend.
Rev. Brown: Do you love Him? Do you feel joy? Say "Joy"!
Prince Akeem: Joy!
Rev. Brown: Joy! Can I get an "Ahe-men"? Don't be ashamed to call His name!
Awareness Woman: Yes, Lord!
Rev. Brown: Only God can give that woman the kind of joy she has right there! Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!
Prince Akeem: I am very happy to be here!
CTA is up there with Beverly Hills Cop, one of the best Eddie Murphy movies ever made.

How can you not have seen this movie ever???
What are you doin' outhere in the desert....?? Not watching Coming To America, apparantly
Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :
ok, i have seen snips throughout the years, but nothing more than a couple of minutes worth...just flipping through channels, i think?
i'm excited to watch it now.
Posted by Muffy Tepperman (Member # 1551) on :
It seriously is one of my favorite movies!!
I watched it alot as child....and would quote it alot then and alot now...haha
"give a hand for you Sexual Chocolate you all........clap.....clap............I believe the children are our fuuuuuuuuuture"
I love Arsenio and Eddie in every part they play!
Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :
wow so many people quoting this.. where the heck have i been?
Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :
"I hope you don't mind me coming over here and sitting down. I've been watching you all evening and I wannna tear you apart. And your friend too!"
Yes as JAY LEE says, if you have not seen this you must be living in the desert. It is a must see. However there are always those movies that you see at the video store back in the day that you just don't grab. Usually I have a good instinct for this. 98% of the time I really can judge the book by its cover. It would go down as one of my favourite comedy movies of all time. Watching Trading Places and this back to back is always fun.
You have to get it, if you have not seen and hopefully to whoever it will be another classic to add to you repetoir.
It does not happen very often, but I love it when I find a brilliant 80's movie now, that had somehow evaded my grasp for 30 years. Well almost 30 years.
Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
Ronnie.. I always thought you lived in the Valley?
Totally think you will enjoy "Coming To America".. it is cute and charming. Eddie Murphy is brilliant and quite sincere as a prince in seek of his princess.
I think it is hilarious how everyone use quotes from this film in their everyday lives. It is a movie that I do enjoy.. but I had to search for my old VHS tape to even watch it the other day.. so it is more like a lost 80's classic in a way.
We all have a few movies that slipped by us through the years.. the ones we kept thinking.. 'I need to watch that sometime'.. but never did. Hope you enjoy it when you get the chance to watch it.

what else can be said about this movie that hasn't already been said? I've seen this one quite a few times myself. Used to own it on VHS and i've seen it enough to almost know the whole movie word for word.
And I agree with the lot here...you definitely need to see this if you never have. For if you don't....

I've always loved this one as well.....a great duo. I like when Eddie is still in his kingdom and after he's done using the washroom, a servant claps his hands and yells for the "wipers".....funny. I have the DVD, so may just watch it soon....
