Its really hard to put into a list of top ten, the next time I watch somthing like a Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Bloodsport, Willow, Three O' Clock High, or a Quiggly Down Under I could change my mind about one of the ones on the list. But I will say that the my number one will always be the burbs, for whatever reason the movie really does it for me

I can't do it. I simply can't boil it down to ten. There are about 50 films I would want to list, and any omission would be a sin.

Helen, I know you think you can get away with that but I think some people might notice that you have listed 15 films. Nice try though. Ultra shifty IMO

If you can count a series of films as one, I would say the Indiana Jones Trilogy.
You know of all the ones you guys mentioned I've yet to see
Casablanca Citizen Kane Blue Velvet 2001: A Space Odyssey The Third Man Sunrise The Wages of Fear Dracula: Prince Of Darkness Brief Encounter Pan's Labyrinth Double Indemnity The Conversation The Wicker Man (1973) though saw Nic Cage one and wish i hadn't Rumble Fish Funny Girl Dead Of Night (1945) Saw the first Phantasm but none of the others
Pretty sure I saw all of yours The Pyromantic 7 Faces of Dr. Lao is that the one where the guy plays Dr. Lau and all the attractions in his carnival?

I am much more comfortable criticising other people's lists
Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :
Citizen Kane is getting alot of mentions and I know it is highly regarded, but IMO it's absolute vomit.
Jack, BTW, I love The Wicker Man '73. Fantastic movie. I have not seen the remake, but I read somewhere that it is now considered an unintentional comedy.
Posted by Helen_S (Member # 5804) on :
That's what I love about you, always holding back
Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :
I cannot put it down to ten movies but if I did it would look like nobody elses. That's for sure. Caddyshack would be number one for starters. Weekend at Bernies might make the list too. Season of the Witch might make it if I was to do a top 5,000 list though
Posted by Helen_S (Member # 5804) on :
Just do it and quit your whining
Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :
Caddyshack The Terminator Stand By Me Teen Wolf Trading Places The Breakfast Club - yeah I know Dirty Harry Jaws Fletch Thrashin'
Dishonorable mentions: Season of the Witch
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
The Wicker Man '73 is a justly recognized masterpiece. The remake is probably one of the worst remakes of any film ever. And another bad Nic Cage film...
By the way, my Top 10 list is serious and not just put together to be a contrarian. I want to beat the drum to folks on here to move a little out of their comfort zone of yet another viewing of "Can't Buy Me Love" and just check out some of these amazing films, even if they aren't from the 80s. It may look like an off-putting high-brow list, but I think that many of you will find these to be great, enthralling, and entertaining films, even if "Sunrise" is a silent film (but it looks like it could've been filmed this past year) and "The Wages of Fear" has subtitles.

What a horrible smiley Bernie lol
See, wasn't so hard was it Nice to see you stepped out of the 80's 3 times
Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :
I know my list sounds prototypical of this site but these kind of movies are the movies that I really do get the most out of. Or at least have got the most out of over the years.

Yay for more Returns love
Posted by Jack Gannon (Member # 9144) on :
Helen S if you want more love for Returns, here it is. I think that Batman Returns was one of the best written and best directed Batman movies ever. Sure I like Batman 89 better, but how can you miss with Nicholson playing the Joker, Keaton as Batman?
However when you take a look at Returns you see that it takes in my opinion two of the weaker characters of the Batman franchise, The Penquin, and Catwoman and casts two excelent actors who play them so well they make them interesting. Also they took simple plot and created a cool, unique, interesting movie. And made in my opinion a masterpeice of film. And to top it all off, here is the cudegraw, Christopher Walken is an added bonus.

Cool stuff You know, I always loved Returns but I wasn't that into the 89 Batman when I was a kid. It was only when I gotten old that I fell in love with it.
Woo @ Donnie Brasco

I personally think my list might get the award for most eclectic taste in movies. In no order of preference,
Duck Soup (1933) Better Off Dead (1985) Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) King Kong (1933) Gremlins (1984) A Day at the Races (1937) Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987) Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) The Thing (1982) Gojira/Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1954/1956)
Honorable Mentions:
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
The Buddy Holly Story (1978)
North by Northwest (1959)
Halloween (1978)
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)
Creepshow (1982)
How's that for diversity?
As you can see, I prefer movies made from 1990 and before. Although there have been some good and even a few great movies made since then (i.e. Napoleon Dynamite, Where the Wild Things Are, the British version of Death at a Funeral, etc.), they are few and far between.

Oliver Cromwell issued a proclamation in 1651 which is still legally binding:
"Anee manne womanne or childe who is founde to have boild' their fave all-time movee liste downe to tenne, shalle hereby be guiltee of heresy and be denogginizede and impaled on a rustee spyke"
That law applied to all the English speaking world. Watch your backs people.
