The results have been tabulated and the Top 20 All-Time Favorite 80's Movies of the Rewind Members are about to be revealed..
Let's start with some quick stats:
Total Participants in poll: 21
Males: 13
Females: 8
Number of films voted for: 211
Since most of us have watched these movies numerous times, I'm just going to post the movie with a link to the Rewind movie page .. so please click the pic if you want to check out the Rewind movie page.
Obviously this is all in fun, so if you happen upon this thread in progress.. please share your thoughts on the results!
We're going to start with #20 and work our way to #1 .. prepare to be shocked.
But before we begin.. we should discuss a few movies that were just outside of the Top 20 and are getting their bubbles burst early:
Big Trouble In Little China Pretty In Pink The Shining Vacation Revenge of the Nerds
All are worthy choices that received multiple votes from Rewinders, but in the end they just fell short of the Top 20.
So who did make the Top 20? Well, you are about to find out!

Let's have it already! Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
Speaking of "The Shining" .. it is thought to be the greatest horror flick ever by many, but it only had five people vote for on this poll. Still an awesomely creepy movie, but just outside the Top 20.

#10 - Valley Girl (1983) Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
My all-time fav movie was only number #10.. there must be some incredible movies coming up next!
Posted by kevdugp73 (Member # 5978) on :
I'd have called for a re-count Valley if this was number one....number 10 is suspicious...but you seem trustworthy enough....although.....Karate Kid # 11......are you Karate Kidding!!!????

By most of the list so far I am weary of these incredibles LOL

Might be neat for everyone to post their top 20 list to do some comparisons. Mine was:
1 Gremlins 2 The Karate Kid 3 Back To The Future 4 The Breakfast Club 5 The Goonies 6 Ghostbusters 7 Sixteen Candles 8 First Blood 9 Pretty In Pink 10 Weird Science 11 The Empire Strikes Back 12 Rocky 3 13 Revenge Of The Nerds 14 Some Kind Of Wonderful 15 Valley Girl 16 Flashdance 17 The Toy 18 Can't Buy Me Love 19 The Lost Boys 20 ET
Most surprised at Gremlins, Pretty In Pink and Weird Science not making the list. My top choice not even in the top 20...wow.....
Thanks again Valley for all your hard work....very fun....
Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :
i waited for the list to be complete before i responded. thanks again valley for getting all the info together.
well, i knew from the get-go that my list was going to be a little out there. i am very surprised that KK isn't top ten.. but i didn't vote for it at all, so it's not a big deal to me haha... but i am very very shocked that lost boys is #1. another movie that didn't make it on my list!!
nice to see what the rewinders picked. we voted, and there it is! Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
Finally.. I want to thank Ronnie aka NowhereGirl for helping me with this next pic. She sent me her Top 20 list this way and I thought it was so cool that I asked her to do something similar to recap the Rewind Top 20. I actually saved her list and the pic below to my photobucket so that I will always have them to reference..

Devolution here,
Kind of shocked at the Lost Boys. I always felt it was a bit overrated, I mean it's a good movie but... hey that's why they are called opinions.
I'll post my 20 tomorrow.

I think 6 of mine got in. My only regret is not placing 16 candles higher on my list. It would have been a deserving #1.

Posted by Muffy Tepperman (Member # 1551) on :
I'm surprised of the order? haha
Wasn't Goonies #1 last time....funny how things change? because my new list was totally different from last time. I made my list, sent it to Valley, then I looked up the old thread and i'd written something to the effect of "no E.T and Say Anything?" and neither made my list this time.
So the one thing i've been thinking about is? how does one figure this out? does each movie when it rates higher on someones list get more points? or just in general how many votes it got? I want to know the technical stuff.
I love Ronnie's list!! I wrote mine on paper and scratched and unscratched and moved....then I typed my list.....we are all so old school. Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
Muffy .. the way the poll worked was:
Your #1 movie was worth 20 points, your #2 movie was worth 19 points... etc.. with your #20 movie worth 1 point.
And I did the entire recap on a giant notepad .. but it was in no way as cool as what Ronnie sent me!
Also, you are correct.. "The Goonies" was the #1 movie last time.

Here´s my list:
1. Big Trouble in Little China 2. The Wraith 3. Ferris Bueller´s Day Off 4. Night of the Creeps 5. The Lost Boys 6. Planes, Trains and Automobiles 7. Gremlins 8. Back to the Future 9. The Thing 10. Sixteen Candles

Ok. This thread wins!
Cheesed about PiP not making it. I think my vote for Empire is what kept it in the top 20! I knew my number 1 wouldn't be anywhere (never is). Problem is, almost every film from about 20-40 should really have deserved a place - but there was no room in the life-raft!
Can someone post the 'old' top 20 for comparison?
My list:
Tootsie The Empire Strikes Back Back to the Future The Goonies Sixteen Candles Just One of the Guys Explorers Can't Buy Me Love Fast Times at Ridgemont High Valley Girl
WarGames Lucas Pretty in Pink Some Kind of Wonderful E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Electric Dreams Arthur Conan the Barbarian Hero at Large Fame

Loved the running commentary from Helen and Kev. I'm going to quote big chunks of it!:

Here is my list that I sent in:
1. Caddyshack 2. The Terminator 3. Teen Wolf 4. The Breakfast Club 5. National Lampoon's Vacation 6. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 7. Three Amigos 8. Trading Places 9. Coming to America 10. Uncle Buck 11. Weekend at Bernies 12. Fast Times at Ridgemont High 13. An American Werewolf in London 14. Caddyshack 2 15. Ferris Bueller's Day Off 16. Thrashin' 17. Can't Buy Me Love 18. Ghostbusters 19. North Shore 20. The Princess Bride
Seven of my picks made it. I am still deeply disturbed that Teen Wolf has not even merrited a mention.
Caddyshack - I am glad Caddyshack made it but at #19. Fellas, come on.
The Terminator - Had to make it obviously
Ferris Bueller's Day Off - John Hughes, nothing further to be said.
Ghostbusters - What can I say
Fast Times at Ridgemont high - Spicoli wouldda cut sick if this didn't make it.
The Breakfast Club - John Hughes, again
Can't Buy Me Love - One of the strongest messages in 80's movies - Tough enough to be yourself.
While there are many that are not on my list, I can't argue with there deservedness of being there, however I feel that there were a few that well don't deserve to be there. Please don't lynch me after this list:
The Lost Boys Better Off Dead Aliens The Empire Strikes Back
I am sure after that little list my top 20 is going to be subject to severe scrutiny.
Interstingly enough, the only movie I have not seen from the top20 list is Night of The Creeps so I can't comment on that one.
I also can't believe I forgot about The Goonies.

My list.....
1. Some Kind Of Wonderful (7th) 2. The Princess Bride 3. Die Hard 4. Gregory's Girl 5. The Breakfast Club (6th) 6. Blade Runner 7. Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan 8. Raiders Of The Lost Ark (18th) 9. Blind Date 10. Ferris Beiller's Day Off (13th) 11. Clue 12. Big Trouble In Little China 13. Real Genius 14. Terminator (15th) 15. Night Shift 16. The Blues Brothers 17. Electric Dreams 18. No Way Out 19. Mannequin 20. A Fish Called Wanda
Well, that was my second list (apparently I wasn't allowed to put the same movie from 1 thru 20......
What surprised me was that so many of the movies we talk about most often, and that were on the list before, were so obviously missing this time. I guess a sample size of just 21 respondents will do that. So anyone who didn't vote in time and disagrees with the results - you know what to do next time!

A few folks mentioned the Rewind Poll from 2005, so I thought it might be interesting to post it. It isn't apples to apples because it was a Top 15 versus a Top 20 this time around.. but I'm actually amazed that 11 of the 15 movies from 2005 are in the Top 20 for 2011. And of those 11 .. it appears 9 of them are in the top 10. So with a very different group.. the list of top movies stayed quite similar.
Top 15 All-Time Favorite 80's Movie Poll Results 2005
1. The Goonies (1985) - #5 in 2011 2. Sixteen Candles (1984) - #2 in 2011 3. The Breakfast Club (1985) - #6 in 2011 4. Valley Girl (1983) - #10 in 2011 5. Back To The Future (1985) - #4 in 2011 6. Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982) - #8 in 2011 7. Pretty In Pink (1986) 8. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) - #13 in 2011 9. The Lost Boys (1987) - #1 in 2011 10. Weird Science (1985) 11. Can't Buy Me Love (1987) - #3 in 2011 12. Some Kind Of Wonderful (1987) - #7 in 2011 13. The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - #17 in 2011 14. St. Elmo's Fire (1985) 15. Return Of The Jedi (1983)
Oh and "Sixteen Candles" appears to always be the bridesmaid.. fitting? ha

1. Better Off Dead 2. Gremlins 3. The Thing 4. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles 5. Porky's 6. A Nightmare on Elm Street 7. Night of the Creeps 8. Summer Rental 9. Creepshow 10. The Breakfast Club 11. Honorable mentions: Spring Break, House, Hardbodies, Sixteen Candles, The Serpent and the Rainbow, The Toxic Avenger, One Crazy Summer, Trading Places, They Live, Screwballs.
It was nice to see a diverse mix of '80s favorites and cult hits make the overall list. I was surprised to see The Lost Boys make it to #1. It was a real dark horse candidate, IMHO.
Everyone's list looks great. Congrats, my fellow Rewinders!

As my list is kinda horror heavy and I knew nobody but me would be voting Parts 2 and 3 of KK I was thinking maybe 3 or 4 of mine would make the list, alas it was only The Karate Kid
1. The Karate Kid 2. The Karate Kid, Part II 3. The Karate Kid, Part III 4. Once Upon A Time In America 5. Rumble Fish 6. Labyrinth 7. The Shining 8. Razorback 9. Phantasm II 10. Hellraiser 11. Robocop 12. The Last Emperor 13. Blue Velvet 14. Crossroads 15. The Outsiders 16. Phenomena 17. Near Dark 18. Fright Night 19. Heathers 20. Diner

Mad Max and probably BMX Bandits too.
See, there are probably many movies that us Aussies have not seen or heard of that the Americans have and vice versa. Cos, as you know while the Aussie film industry is not that big it has produced some fine films over the years. Malcolm comes to mind off the top of my head.

Just realised something, and it'd be cool to see if anyone else thinks the same.....
I just sketched out a top 20 without referring to the list I sent in, and it's very different. Some movies are there that didn't even make the first list (Secret of my Success, The Sure Thing, Streets Of Fire) whilst others I voted pretty highly didn't even figure this time (like Real Genius, No Way Out) and Fish Called Wanda kinda dropped off by default.
Wonder what difference people's moods make to which movies they think are great - or are some movies just great at that point in time....

I didn't have time to get mine in before the cutoff.
** There are several movies that I left off such as Empire and Raiders, because I only wanted to include movies that have that unique "80's" feel. Otherwise Empire Strikes Back would be my #1.

Devolution here,
Yep, we have some real fun things going on here, I loved the "Ralph Macchio heavy" line, oddly I was thinking the same thing. Seriously. Not that I picked the best of the best movies, but Crossroads (both the Macchio and Spears versions) isn't great cinema to me.
We are DEVO

WOW Helen, you really do like the Karate Kid dont you. Your list is really interesting to look at. Im kind of wondering what KK movies are doing for you that they made the top 3 spots.

So looking at your top 10 Muffy, its definately loaded with boy meets girl, boy wants girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back again or something to that effect . . . your a romantic theres no doubt about that. Another great list which seems to show peoples' personality. I like it.

I would never even attempt to put into words why I love The Karate Kid films so much. It would only do them an injustice
Crossroads is one of those films that lingers with me for days afterwards.

Most interesting, non-prosaic choice on any list... I remembering liking this movie the single time that I saw it way back when. As I understand, 20th Century Fox completely retooled the film over the objections of director William Richert. (I think Richert had the misfortune of studio interference on every one of his films.) The studio wanted a teen film, but Richert wanted something more serious. Apparently Richert's original version called "Aren't You Even Going to Kiss Me Goodbye?" had him narrating the film as River Phoenix as an old man, it was longer, and the music was all different. I'm not even sure that it is available in North America.
Darn! I thought I'd closed the book on discovering new-to-me 80s films. Now I'm going to have to track down that elusive alternate version. But that's what makes this place great fun (even with all the discussion--completely mystifying to me--about why Can't Buy Me Love is considered an 80s classic). Sequels have split votes.

Me too. It was one of the last ones I cut.
quote:Did you mean to say "RALPH MACCHIO" heavy um I know you did
I ever tell you how much I look like Ralph Macchio? It's true. But only like... at his physical peak and stuff.

You added a bias to your selection! If you'd gone ahead and chosen the movies from the 80's you truly loved the most, it would have had an impact. 'Empire' was my # 2. If you'd picked it as # 1 it would have been higher than the paltry # 17 it got! You denied it 20 points! I knew nobody else would pick Tootsie when I chose it as my # 1 - but that didn't stop me! Look at Helen's list - it's insane! That didn't stop her!
I DEMAND A RECOUNT!
Ok, that wouldn't help.
I DEMAND A REVOTE!

Seriously. Just like him. Twins practically.

I think Jimmy Reardon is a failed mess. But I'd be very interested in seeing the alternate.

Because most people would like to know what life was like for the 'other side' at school, and it shows it - warts and all. With all the inherent loss of human decency that may occur when status is attained suddenly.

I just ran into Ricky Linderman today and he beat me up karate kid style because I din't vote for My Bodyguard. Man, that dude is so uptight.

I hear he killed his brother.

LOL Logan, I don't like Ralph like that. You're gonna have to say you resemble Mickey Rourke, James Franco instead Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :
Logan: In a press conference Linderman was quoted as saying, "Shut up. Shut up, I didn't find him! I KILLED him! I shot him! Little menace deserved it though. I mean the nerve of him not voting for My Bodyguard. God, I was laughing. I was laughing when it went off."

Yeah... that's what I meant... I look like James Franco and Mickey Rourke. I vaguely recall telling you that me and Mickey (as he was in the 80's) are like twins. Me and Ralph are like... total opposites. I thought I made that clear.

Was this before or after he started dating a guy named 'Peach' in a bizarre closet-gay subtext way?

Logan, I think you're mistaking this thread for the "most attractive actress of the 80s" thread....

Numero uno. It's not that it means more to me than many of the other films on the list, it's just that I always name it as my fave, and unlike some people (JK - I'm looking at you!) I didn't want to tailor it strictly to conventional 80's tastes (though I think there was some of that happening subconsciously. I am a hypocrite, aren't I? Helen - exactly like a young Mickey Rourke - honest).

Ha! I suppose you think I wouldn't have sex with Dustin Hoffman dressed as a woman?! Well you're *wrong*!
Eh... I mean... wasn't Phoebe Cates a babe in Fast Times?! Something like that...
