It seemed like the 80's had a way to turn every holiday into a horror flick! I know the tradition actually started with the movie appropriately titled "Halloween", but soon no holiday was safe including Valentine's Day..
There's a big valentine-party planned in the little coal mining town of Valentine Bluffs, Nova Scotia. It is the first Valentine's Day party in 20 years, because there was an unfortunate accident in the mine 20 years ago and it happened because the men responsible for the mine's security were at the party. Soon after this horrific mining accident, the little town of Valentine Bluffs was under siege by a wicked killer who wields a gas mask, a miner's outfit, and one mean pick-axe. After the rampage, the killer warned the town to never hold a Valentine's party ever again. Spring forward 20 years and the young adults of the town simply want to enjoy a nice Valentine's party believing that the horror story was similar to an urban legend .. but they soon learn that the killer has possibly returned -- however, there might actually a method to our maniac's madness that we don't quite understand just yet.
"My Bloody Valentine" really works from a visual prospective for me. The town itself is perfectly quaint and boring, its citizens are believably normal, and the underground mines are definitely creepy.
Fans of the original "My Bloody Valentine" consider it an 80's horror gem with an above average story and some the most creative kill scenes around.
And some of you might remember me joking about how I kept expecting the movie "Heavenly Bodies" to turn into a horror flick. Well, that is because Cynthia Dale's performance in "My Bloody Valentine" was so haunting.
I just checked and it is available on Netflix Instant Watch.. so tonight when you are planning to watch a sweet Valentine's movie with a loved one .. think of this thread and take a ride down the mine shaft and truly celebrate Valentine's Day 80's style..

I will be watching this one tonight! I've only seen it a couple of times but I remember it having a really creepy atmospere and some inventive death scenes. The laundromat scene is classic 80's horror!

Just watched the flick and it was a good one! Very much in the vein of The Prowler (also 1981)
I liked the settings, the town, the bar and the spooky mines. I also liked the characters.
This was director George Mihalkas second movie, he directed this right after very good teen flick Pinball Summer (aka Pick-Up Summer)
Cynthia Dale did not disappoint, she was very cute once again and it was great that Keith Knight (Meatballs, Hog Wild , Class of 1984 etc.) was her boyfriend. Not your typical 80s slasher couple.
Some really brutal kills in this one, you have to get the special edition to see them in all gory glory.
The ending was great, i loved it. And the end credits "hymn" was spot on!

I like this one! I'd originally planned on watching it tonight. Epix HD has been showing the remake, but I wasn't real impressed with it.

The exact opposite of a true 80's fan...I've seen the remake, but not the original. I think I'll have to save this one for Halloween. My wife is working tonight, so once my little guys' in bed, I have a 3 hour window to watch a movie...but not really in the mood for horror. Hmmmmm...as I write this...may have changed my mind. Electric Dreams...or...My Bloody Valentine....???

Muffy.. I'm pretty disappointed that your girlfriends weren't interested in watching a horror movie on Valentine's Day.
What? .. do they still believe in true love with flowers with boxes of chocolates instead of a gas masked killer swinging a pick-axe with boxes of real hearts?
Muffy, I have to be in the right mood for "My Bloody Valentine" .. it isn't a fav of mine.. but still decent.
