Ever since Muffy posted her Your Own Oscar Ballot - 1986 thread, my interest has been peaked on some of the movies that were nominated that year. I'm considering watching a few of these movies to try to catch up on them, but it's tough because most of them don't seem to fit my usual taste. I'm more of a comedy or silly b-movie watcher. Maybe you guys could make some recommendations?
Platoon I could watch again if I had to. The Mission...eh, what do you guys think? Hannah and Her Sisters sounds ok enough. Room With A View has always seemed like it could be quite boring, again I'd ask you guys if it's worth a watch. Crimes of the Heart, Round Midnight and The Morning After I don't think I've ever heard of.
I'm somewhat turned of to Children of a Lesser God, because I heard that Hurt used to physically abuse Matlin back when they were in a relationship during filming. I just doubt I could watch it now and not be thinking about those real life stories.
Any thoughts?

Haven't seen 'Round Midnight' and can't remember 'Crimes of the Heart', so...
'Children of a Lesser God' is a drama, and if that story is true, then it would be even more depressing. But I liked it.
'The Mission' is depressing.
'Hannah and Her Sisters' I always liked quite a bit.
'Morning After' I quite liked. It's a fairly good b-movie thriller with an 80's vibe. Good cast too: Jane Fonda, Jeff Bridges, Raul Julia.
I would say start with 'Hannah' and then 'Morning After'.

I think I have only seen The Mission because most of these movies are not up my alley either.
I found The Mission Extremely boring. I would not even consider watching it again.

b-movie thriller with an 80's vibe i'm all over it!! It's on Netflix instant watch.
There was also a movie in the Original Screenplay category called My Beautiful Laundrette that looks interesting...comedy/drama with Daniel Day Lewis.
I saw Children of a Lessor God a looooong time ago. I'm with you SA I hate when you hear real life things like that and it can't help but make you see the character as the actor.I really love him in The Accidental Tourist....but since I learned that about William Hurt it makes me not appreciate him so much.

I forget now where I read it, but somebody wrote way back in the day that William Hurt threw himself down on the floor during an interview and started yelling, "You are trying to control my Id!" Lunatic... Matlin, in her own written life story, admitted that she was seriously chemically addicted and checked herself into rehab right around the time she was nominated for Best Actress.

They both sound screwed up.
What's wrong with shouting "You're trying to control my Id!"? I do that all the time!

so I started Crimes of the Heart and it's pretty slow and I was having a hard time getting into it.....I will try to get back to it.
Also started The Morning After this morning. It's also more of a drama.......Fonda and Bridges are keeping me watching it, but it's a little slow for even a thriller..........so we will see, i'll keep you guys posted......maybe i'm in the mood for a comedy right now haha
