I think since I was a kid in the 80's Rourke flew under my radar.....his roles are mostly more adult dramatic roles right???

So I just watched The Wrestler.......along with watching movies like Diner and 9 1/2 Weeks in the last year.........so of course watching the Wrestler is a shock.....probaly how the movie is so believable???

Who here knows Rourke's story??? was he a troubled actor? is it just bad plastic surgery?

Do you have any favorite Rourke roles?

Joe Queenan, who is an outstanding and hilarious writer about movies, wrote the quintessential piece on Rourke called "Mickey Rourke for a Day." Here it is on-line:

I've always wanted to do everything that Queenan does in the article. :-)

Enjoy.

Rourke was one of those 'going to be big' actors who never quite broke out. I always liked him in 'Rumble Fish'.

He took some time out in the 80's and 90's to become an amateur boxer. That and the natural aging process are why he had all that surgery.

Popcorn?

I agree with Helen_S! I really believe that there has never been anyone hotter than Mickey was in the 80's.

I first saw Angel Heart when I was a teenager and became obsessed after that, and have kept loving him ever since. Mickey was a very well-respected actor in the 80's, but once the 90's rolled around, he had become somewhat of a joke due to the boxing stint and some poor choices in movie roles. He also had a reputation for being "difficult" to work with. Mickey has said that towards the late 80's he became disillusioned with Hollywood and no longer really cared about acting.

After he did The Wrestler, he finally started getting some respect for the awesome actor he is, and now it seems like he is back in top form where he should be.

I think Barfly and The Wrestler are his two best performances.

[Smile] Barfly is one of the few I haven't seen yet. Gotta get that.

Barfly is kinda depressing, but def worth looking at, for Rourke's performance!

I ever tell you how much I look like Mickey Rourke? No? Seriously - if you squinted and I broke the bridge of your nose causing your eyes to water, then took ten paces back, stood in the shadows and played a recording of Rourke's voice, you'd be semi convinced I was the man himself. Well? How about it?

'Threads', 'Edge of Darkness', 'Aguirre Wrath of God', 'Fitzcarraldo'. Have a movie marathon. I'll send my condolences to your family.

I think Rourke is an amazing actor. Just look at his roles in the eighties.
In 1983 he played a young Dean/Brando type rebel in Rumble Fish. Only 2 years later, he played a grey-haired Vietnam-veteran in Year of the Dragon. And another 2 years after that, he was completely believable as a fat, stooping alcoholic in Barfly.
I hope he keeps his career on trail this time. I would love to see him in some more quality movies.
