To kickoff 'The Halloween Scary Movie Thread 2010'.. I thought it would be fun to plan a 'Rewind Movie Night' ahead of time. I realize a few Rewinders have already started their Halloween countdown, but I usually wait until October 1st each year to begin my 31 days of horror.
So with all the love I've been noticing recently.. I think the Friday night October 1st Rewind Movie Night should be:
For those that have never seen "Chopping Mall".. it is the documentary behind why 'The Galleria' that stood in all its 80's glory had to be demolished. I don't know who came up with the horrible idea that they should unleash security 'killbots' on nightly intruders, but since The Galleria was the overnight haunting ground for such 80's movies as "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", "Breakin' All the Rules", and finally the retitled after what happened "Chopping Mall"..... this new security system might not have been such a good idea after all.
Okay.. not everyone accepts that "Chopping Mall" is a true documentary, so for those non-believers here's the premise:
A group of four couples plan a party at the local furniture store where three of the guys work. They just happen to plan it on the first night a new security system is activated. The security system includes three protector robots and large steel doors that lock at midnight and don't open again until sunrise. Unfortunately, the rooftop computer that controls the robots is struck by lightning and they turn into vicious killbots attacking everyone in sight with their wicked armament. The trapped teens soon realize that the only way to survive is to try to figure out a way to destroy these out of control robots.
For fans of the 80's and The Sherman Oaks Galleria, "Chopping Mall" is a Halloween season must!
So is anyone else up for a "Chopping Mall" movie night?
The overall purpose of this thread is actually to discuss and share the horror flicks we each decide to watch this year that will eventually culminate with a movie marathon on Halloween night.
So let's unleash the Rewind horror!

I'm going for more of a laugh this year. So I'm gonna watch all the best Comedy\Horror I can think of.
Examples:
Killer Klowns from outer space Return of the Living Dead Redneck Zombies Night of the Creeps Ghoulies 2 Garbage Pail Kids (wait, that's not horror is it?...oh well, it still scares me.) The Gate
...so, anymore suggestions related to funny cheesy scary movies like these would be cool.

Pyro mentioned it, so I might just watch "Killer Klowns From Outer Space" (1988) today. I must admit this movie makes me laugh out loud with its crazy concept and antics. But don't forget that those Killer Klowns are scary cool with wicked intentions.
Secret Admirer and I were discussing great comedy horror flicks for non-horror fans, but I'm not sure this flick qualifies because there are parts of the movie that actually creep me out a bit. For instance when the clown is motioning to the little girl to come out and play with him and when that other clown uses Moody as a puppet. Both great scenes, but not for everyone especially if clowns make you uncomfortable.
This movie has to be considered a cult classic by now. It is up there in my opinion for quirky comedy horror. The tone of the movie was excellent and never took itself too serious to keep you from laughing at times.
It was so neat to see actors like Grant Cramer (Hardbodies), Suzanne Synder (Weird Science), John Allen Nelson (Hunk), & John Vernon (Animal House) in different roles.

I just watched this today on MGM-HD for the first time all the way through! This is one of those movies that works best when you have a group of people watching it together and just laughing through it. I am one of those people that is creeped out by clowns, so some parts do freak me out (the example with the little girl that Valley pointed out), but it's all so campy that you can't really be scared. My favorite part was probably the one with the shadow puppets....

and valley, i know you recently rounded everyone up for friday the 13th a few weeks back, but netflix has parts 1 through 6 of the jason movies available for instant watch. since i was planning on watching those anyway, i thought i'd share for anyone else who has netflix. i love parts 1 through 7. carrie and the exorcist are also available for instant watch.

Ronnie.. I've never actually watched Friday The 13th part 1-7 in order. I only have Directv OnDemand, so I can't keep up.. but I do own part 1 and 2. When are you planning to start your marathon? Isn't one of the rules of horror movies to never watch them alone?

Oh and Mamamia wants you to save "Curtains" for when she can watch it too. She loves the ice skating scene!

"Fade To Black" is good, I just wish it had been made in 1989.. so that we might have seen some of the 80's horror characters we all enjoy.
"Hell Night" .. Linda Blair and a horror movie.. you know it's got be good.
"The Initiation" .. is a hidden gem and my fave from your list, but I'm a Daphne Zuniga fan so that plays into it.
"Killer Party".. maybe go read our thread with the real story behind this movie.. it could have been so much better.
"Curtains".. definitely worth seeking out!

that's actually exactly what I'm going for this year. I want movies that a roomful of friends can just kick back and laugh at while getting drunk. Killer Klowns is already kind of an iffy choice though considering I already know a few of my friends are freaked by clowns. I'll keep it there though just cuz i'm a mean ******* like that...hehe I've also already added "Chopping Mall" to the list, cuz I think that movie can get a few good chuckles. And i've never seen "Curtains", so I'm adding that one too. And since this will be my first viewing of it...I'll certainly tell you all what I thought of it after I watch it.

i was hoping to get started next week, val... after my vacation! starting with part 1 of course. you know, when it comes to the friday the 13th series, with the exception of parts 1 & 2, they always came across somewhat comedic to me. the first two were more serious and scary IMO.

watched Dolls quite a bit this year. i even watched the dvd commentary hehe. i was in Arkansas without cable during forth of july so Dolls kept me entertained for the rest of night.

After two more shifts at work, I begin an eleven days off stretch, so I'm hoping to begin my horror marathon as well. I'll do my best to watch Chopping Mall. Also hoping to see Fright Night 2 (which I've never seen), but want to watch part 1 first. Soon to pull out all my horror/Halloween movies and try to decide which ones to watch. Trying to be more realistic this year as I always pick out way too many movies and never have time to watch them all...I'll start with my favs and try to catch a few I've never seen....

Along with "Chopping Mall", I'm totally watching "Cheerleader Camp". I make no excuses for this flick.. it is goofy horror at its best. The cast with Betsy Russell, Lucinda Dlckey, and Lorie Griffin is 80's awesome and the movie has some of the best b-movie make-up special effects ever.
"Cheerleader Camp" has recently become an October 1st tradition for me to kickoff the haunting season.

Last night I took TNUC suggestion as well as remenbered Veronica mentioning it.. so I watched "The Burning"..
I highly recommend "The Burning" for horror flick fans and especially those that enjoy the Friday The 13th franchise. Actually, if "The Burning" had been release first to a mainstream audience it might be better known today.
The cast makes this movie worth finding in my opinion. Though annoying it was great to see Brian Backer (Fast Times) and Jason Alexander (Seinfield) in early roles. Oh and don't blink, but that was Holly Hunter in a small role. I was never a huge Fisher Stevens fan, but you will find him here too.
But let's get down to what makes this movie infamous.. there is plenty of gore and one scene (don't want to give it away) that is legendary for horror fans.

Day 4.. From Beyond
"From Beyond" centers around a pair of scientists attempting to stimulate the pineal gland with a device called The Resonator. An unforeseen result of their experiments is the ability to perceive creatures from another dimension that proceed to drag the lead scientist into their world, who later returns as a grotesque shape-changing monster and preys upon the others at the laboratory.
I finally got my paws on the uncut version of Stuart Gordon's "From Beyond".. I had heard about it years ago, but it wasn't until I saw "The Re-Animator" on late night cable recently that it reminded of this flick. I've seen the 'R' rated version a couple of times and I can't imagine the gore getting much worse.. but bring it!
Scream queen Barbara Crampton is terrific in this movie.. and Jeffrey Combs has had quite the career, but I actually remember him best from from the Heather Thomas flick "Cyclone".
But the acting isn't the main reason to watch "From Beyond".. it is the special effects and make-up that are horror awesome. Sitting somewhere right in between hideously grotesque and artistically gorgeous, the special effects in "From Beyond" are some of the most well conceived and constructed for a b-movie.

Day 5 .. Dark Mansions
The 1986 made for tv movie "Dark Mansions" is a contemporary gothic drama about Shellane Victor (Linda Purl) a young woman hired to write the family history of a shipbuilding dynasty. It isn't long before she finds supernatural forces at work upon moving into the clan's compound on a lonely, windswept bluff near Seattle.
Ms. Victor soon meets the scheming Jessica Drake (Lois Chiles) and the ambitious Phillip Drake (Paul Shenar). Noelle Drake (Melissa Sue Anderson) and other young Drakes wander in and out. Noelle is the most interesting of the Drakes. Noelle is blind, apparently from psychosomatic causes. She is also something of a seer, visited by strange powers.
Overall, this is quite an entertaining movie for being made almost like a late night soap. Worth watching if you get the opportunity.

Day 6 .. Cat People (1982)
Irena (Nastassja Kinski) and Paul (Malcolm McDowell) star as siblings with a secret in this remake of the 1942 film. The secret is explained during the movie through a dream sequence that's almost like an 80's music video. It takes place out in the red desert, where Irena meets Paul, who tells her the story. Their ancestors sacrificed children to leopards. He says, "The souls of the children grew inside the leopards until the leopards became human." They can only make love to their own, or else they transform to leopards and then must kill before they can become human again...
"Cat People" is just bizarrely cool in my opinion.

Just finished watching Chopping Mall for the first time. Wow! That mall sure had a lot of combustibles. LOL! It was formulaic and followed the "horror movie rules" but I liked it. My favorite line from the film: Rick: "Let's send these ****ers a Rambo-gram." Haha!!
Up next...I'm not sure. I'd like to see some different ones this season that I haven't previously seen. Perhaps Slaughther High, Night of the Creeps, The Gate--or some of the ones I haven't seen in a while like Fright Night, Motel Hell, or Mother's Day.
Of course everything will culminate on Oct 31st with the original Halloween. I used to like to watch a horror film every night during the month of October but I rarely have time for that any longer. So I'll probably only see around 10 horror flicks this month.

Chopping Mall was quite entertaining. I love 80s Horror. Too bad they didn't follow it up with a sequel.
In my opinion, the best horror and comedy films came out of the 80s. Of course most people here probably feel the same way too...that's why we are all here, right? LOL!

Night Of The Creeps is on my must see list as I have yet to watch it but I'm having some trouble finding a copy. I was hoping to locate one before Halloween but the stores where I live are pretty limited in their 80's DVD department. Since I love Chopping Mall so much I know this one is going to be great as well.

I love camp! LOL. I have to say I was not familiar with Jim Wynorski until now. It appears that he is a Roger Corman protege which is pretty cool. Day 7 - Strange Invaders (1983)
"Strange Invaders" is beloved among sci-fi enthusiasts as an early-'80s tribute to its 1950s counterparts.
The plot is simple--Paul LeMat investigates the disappearance of his ex-wife (Diana Scarwid) in a small Illinois town that's been occupied by aliens for 25 years-- the movie's creepy atmosphere and cast seem to make it a good companion to the 50's films that inspired it. There are even two stars from the cult classic sci-fi series "Lost in Space", Mark Goddard and June Lockhart, who appear in this film.
If you like old 50's sci-fi.. then this movie might appeal to you. Otherwise, I don't recommend it. There are a few creepy scenes, but overall it was a miss for me.

Tiffany.. funny you should say that about the ending of "Night of the Creeps" because there are more than one ending depending on if you watched in the theaters, on cable, or on the dvd.
My fav part of the movie is when Chris listens to the haunting recorder from J.C.
If you have never seen "The Return of the Living Dead" .. you're in for a treat.

Valley, I had no idea there were different endings. I'm not sure which version I watched so now I have to go research. I also loved the part where he listens to the recording, very eerie. I happened to find Return Of The Living Dead Collectors Edition in a cheap movie bin today for $7.50. I'll be watching that over the next few days and am totally psyched!

Watched Fright Night 2 for the first time last night....liked it alot. Although....plop Traci Lind and Julie Carmen in Fright Night Part 1....even better!
* I think someone else mentioned this recently, but, wondering why Traci Lind wasn't in more movies....she's super cute and not a bad actress...what up wit dat.
* Julie Carmen...same thing...why not in more movies? She looks like the off-spring from a one night stand between Aylissa Milano and Lisa Bonet'...I'd have watched he rin anything!

Watched Blue Monkey (1987) aka Insect yesterday. It was a decent low-budget horror flick starring Steve Railsback, Gwynyth Walsh and Don Lake.
While working in a greenhouse, a man receives an insect bite after touching an exotic plant. Immediately, he falls ill and is taken to an emergency room where the doctors diagnose him as suffering from an unknown bacteria, and a strange parasite which emerges from his mouth as a large slimy wormlike creature. Soon, there are more cases of bacterial infection, but the more immediate problem for the hospital is the wormlike creature which after accidental exposure to a genetic growth stimulant grows to monstrous proportions and starts a reign of terror and bloodshed in the hospitals abandoned wing. Cool atmosphere, some pretty nurses and one big bug.

My Rocktober has started out with a few spooky flicks as well...this week I watched When a Stranger Calls, Fright Night and Creepshow 2.
Annnd I just returned from a Pet Cemetary/Pet Cemetary 2 double-feature at a theater down the street!....the director was there for a Q+A as well.
Did you know the character "Zelda" in the first movie (the wife's dead sister) is actually played by a male? The director was explained to us that they couldn't find a young girl ugly enough for the role of the sister....so they hired a boy !

Amityville II: The Possession (1982)
I think that this is even better than the original Amityville Horror (1979). But this movie is actually a prequel.
Cool old school effects and some great make-up. Jack Magner looked really evil
It was also nice to see Diane Franklin in her second feature film, right after The Last American Virgin.
"Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter" was the fourth and initially intended be last installment of the Friday the 13th movie franchise. The film proved so popular that seven additional sequels and a reboot have been made since this movie was released in 1984.
Picking up directly after the end of "Friday the 13th: Part III", the film follows the infamous Jason Voorhees as he stalks teens at Crystal Lake. The film features truly unforgettable performances by both Corey Feldman and Crispin Glover.
I really like the mixture of 80's favs in this flick.. you also get to see Kimberly Beck, Judie Aronson, and Lawrence Monoson in different types of roles than the movies that they are best known for by most of us.
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is not just a must see for horror fans, but for anyone who considers themselves a fan of 80's horror.
The teaser for this movie is Crispin Glover's incredible dancing skills:

aTomiK....Amittyville 2 scared the crap out of me as a kid. My parents were pretty flexible with what they allowed me to watch, but this typically wouldn't have been allowed. Anyway....they let me watch it, and it scarred me for life!
Valley....Jason X is actually my favorite......NOT! I own all the Friday the 13ths (except Jason X), but it's been a while since I've seen them all....I'll try to watch a few before Halloween and get back to you on this one...

Oh i grew up with these as a kid in the 80's and early 90's and teen in the mid to late 90's.

Day 14 - Gothic (1986)
Director Ken Russell applies his trademark excess to this surreal, experimental examination of the creative dementia which shaped Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's Frankenstein. The story is embellished from events which allegedly took place at the Swiss villa of Lord Byron (Gabriel Byrne) on the night of June 16, 1816. Byron's guests include poet Percy Shelley (Julian Sands) and his future wife Mary (Natasha Richardson); Mary's half-sister Claire (Myriam Cyr) and Byron's leech-happy personal physician Dr. John Polidori (Timothy Spall). Byron promises them a night of horror like only a mad poet can deliver -- after partaking of laudanum and other hallucinogens, the guests tell ghost stories while exploring the dark corridors of his home. From here, Russell dives headlong into madness, discarding plot structure in favor of fever-dream setpieces in which the guests confront living manifestations of their own fears and insecurities -- creative, mortal and sexual, among others.
I must have passed the VHS tape 25 times before I finally rented this bizarre movie. The movie was a crazy ride that had a haunting feel to it throughout. The premise was intriguing, but the VHS cover might still be the scariest part!

Day 15 - Silent Scream (1980)
When Scotty Parker and three other students move into Mrs Engels' boarding house on the coast, they soon begin to suspect that something strange is happening. Mrs Engels hides away in her attic room and her son Mason is a creepy character who likes to watch violent TV shows. Then one of the students is brutally killed leaving Scotty and the rest questioning why..
"Silent Scream" is a rather creepy slasher that kind of got lost between "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th".. Rebecca Balding is awesome as Scotty. And most people will recognize Barbara Steele who played the daughter Victoria Engels who was quite the scream queen back then. Great scene where they enter a room and she appears to be looking into a mirror.
Oh and great to see Lily Munster in this film as well. You might know the two detectives that seemed a bit slow to react even though they had all the clues early on.
I think what made this movie so interesting was the seaside mansion setting. Some people say that it has several parallels to the movie "Psycho".. creepy mansion, weird son and mother.. and very large knife!
If you think you've had a strange life.. just wait until you meet Mason..

Ditto on Trick r Treat...watched it last year and loved it...I'll try to squeeze it in again this year. I find it hard to decide whether to watch my old favorites that I know and love, while still trying to fit in a few new ones that I haven't seen...

Just finished watching Fright Night. Some horror movies just don't hold up over the years but this one sure does. The vampires look very menacing. Kinda reminds me of what they did with the werewolf in An American Werewolf in London. Now I've gotta track down the sequel. The dvd price is through the roof! Guess I'll have to track down a cheap VHS copy or laserdisc.

Yeah Valley...tonight may finally be the night. My wife will be out helping a friend decorate for a wedding tommorow, so, once my little guy is in bed...hoping to watch a couple of Halloween flicks, starting with "Night of the Comet".
A bit confused though, so maybe someone can clarify....I know "Night of the Comet" is a cult classic and talked about on here quite frequently, but I may have mixed it up with Night of the Creeps...is this the same style of movie, a sequel, or nothing like "Comet". I know I could invest the time and find out for myself by searching through older threads, but this way is quicker and more fun....can someone enlighten me?

Both movies are 80's awesome zombie flicks that fall squarely in Tiffany's description of why she enjoys movies like "Chopping Mall". Horror with a touch of comedy that flows perfectly. The movies have actually nothing to do with each other, except maybe both were overlooked in the 80's.
Night of the Comet - Tempest, DMK, Comet Zombies, Cheerleader, Neon Lighting, Valley Girl Album, Imitation Uzis, REG, the attack of Eddie Munster, Santa Hector..
Night of the Creeps - Sorority Babes, College Geeks, Comet Zombies, Screamin' Banshees, Go Monster Squad, Axe Murder, Dead Formal Dates, Blowtorch, Thrill Me..
I love both movies, but if I had to choose .. it would be NofC

I love love love............Creeps and Comet! I think Kev should get on watching both of them.....I can see why you'd put Chopping Mall in the same catagory but something just went flat on Chopping Mall for me....the humor wasn't AS great? It was all killbots at the end...both NoTC's I can watch over and over and would recommend to everyone!

i recently watched a movie Muffy suggested called House of the Devil and i recognized a lady in that movie, she was the government lady in Night of the Comet and she was also in Chopping Mall. but i mainly remember her as principle Togar in Rock and Roll Highschool.
i have the soundtrack for Comet.. love the song, Hard Act To Followby Diana Dewitt

I seem to be in the minority here. I didn't like Chopping Mall at all. I don't think it's "so bad it's good", it's just "bad". I really like Killer Klowns From Outer Space, though. Such a cheesefest.
Personally, I might watch Neon Maniacs for Halloween. Chances are I'll watch The Monster Squad. And/or maybe Gremlins 2. I might give Return Of The Living Dead a shot, as a first (if I can keep myself from watching it before); I watched Part II the other day and absolutely loved it. If part 1 is in the same vein of the second, I know I'll love it.

Wait Muffy.. I was just referencing Tiffany's comment about "Chopping Mall" and why she considers it classic 80's horror. My own thoughts are that "Chopping Mall" is great late night fun, but if you want me to compare it directly to "Creeps" or "Comet" .. it just can't compare. Both of those are B-movie horror magic!

Thanks guys....my little man is now asleep, so I'm of to watch NotC...I own both NotC and NotC, so I'll let you know later which one I've watched...also have Chopping Mall, but there is no such thing as double features for me anymore, let alone triple features....though....if NotC and NotC have a combined playing time of 3 hours or so...I may just see them both tonight!

Sorry Val-man I'm with ya it was good but can't compare........I do wonder why both flicks weren't as known then? Comet was one I know i'd seen forever ago on USA Up All Night.......Creeps i'd never seen until a few years back and I LOVED it! I love that now they have a cult like status and both got DVD releases

Well...last night I watched "Night of the................................................COMET!!!!" Started a potential double feature with Night of the Creeps, but alas, it was too late = too tired.
I really really loved Comet. The music was great (though I'm not sure why they would have a different girl sing "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"....shameful, as noted by a big Cyndi fan), lots of fun, the ghetto blaster was featured prominantely (which I love....darn shame they shot one with a gun though). And Catherine Mary Stewart!!! WOWZERS! She's like the perfect 80's girl next door....super cute, great 80's hair, great 80's fashion. I really hadn't remembered her in much, though see in her IMBD that she's been in a few classics, but somehow escaped my radar. I kinda wonder why she didn't become more of a star and wasn't cast in more blockbusters. I also did not know she was a fellow Canadian. Anyway, if ya can't tell, I really liked her and loved every minute of Comet.
Tonight is a bust for any follow up features...me and my wife are off to a friend's wedding...my parents are taking our little guy for the night, so looking forward to some drinks and time with my sweetie. Sunday evening looks promising, though with friends coming over to watch a horror flick, I don't think I can sell everyone on an 80's classic....I'll get to see a horror flick regardless, though I always try to convince them to watch Fat Albert's Halloween Special before our feature flick....hey hey hey....it's my house!

kev.. I'm stoked that you are a Comet fan now! I used to think the same thing about the Lauper tune. Never heard the real story, but I do know that Cyndi Lauper was not the original artist for the tune "Girls Just Want To Have Fun". It was actually written and performer by Robert Hazard. Lauper covered the tune and the rest is history..

pettyfan.. I'm interested in a true horror fan's perspective of "Silent Scream". It was an entertaining flick, but felt way more 70's in style, which makes sense with it being released in 1980.
It is actually amazing how much the hair and clothing styles changed from 1979 to say 1983.

I've seen the first Hellraiser, Hellraiser III and the one with Dean Winters. I have part 2 but I've never watched it. The first one was good. I enjoyed the one with Dean Winters because, well, Dean Winters was in it. LOL
Valley, I def. plan on seeing Silent Scream. I may bump it to the top of my list so I won't have to fool with instant watch.
Mother's Day is available on Netflix as instant watch, so I added it to my que. I'm not sure if I can watch it or not...the trailer looked pretty graphic. So we'll have to see.

Day 18 - Monkey Shines (1988)
"Money Shines" was written and directed by horror master George Romero.. here's the premise:
When Allan Mann (Jason Beghe) loses the use of his legs and arms in an accident, he becomes bitter -- no surprise given that his girlfriend dumps him for his surgeon, his new nurse (Christine Forrest) is a shrew, and his smothering mother (Joyce Van Patten) keeps threatening to move in and take care of him.
Enter Kate McNeil (Melanie Parker), a scientist who is working to provide handicapped people with highly trained animal helpers. Soon Allan is bonding with Ella, an adorable Capuchin monkey, who, unbeknownst to him, has been injected with human brain tissue by drug-addicted scientist Geoffrey Fisher (John Pankow). At first Allan loves little Ella, but the monkey seems to grow jealous as Allan slowly develops a romance with the beautiful Kate. Meanwhile, Allan begins having strange dreams in which he experiences the world from a monkey's point of view. These visions culminate in a fiery nightmare the same night Allan's ex-girlfriend and her new lover die in a house fire. Realizing the growing link between his own inner demons and the violence occurring around him, Allan tries to sever the connection with Ella.
I've always thought Jason Beghe was an underrated actor.. I remember him best from movies like "Maid To Order", "Alien Nation", and HBO tv series "1st & Ten". He still pops up from time to time, but has never truly made it big like I expected.
Worth watching to see Stanley Tucci and Janine Turner in early roles..

Piranha Part Two: The Spawning (1981)

Damn this was a funny movie! Lots of WTF moments and it was never dull.

I watched House and Trick r Treat 2009.....you guys said TrT was good and it is! starts out really awesome.....very atmoshperey loved the scenes in the bottom of the cliff. The ending didn't finish with all it could have for me? But I liked it.
Hadn't seen House since I was a kid and remembered liking it......I'd recommend it to Rewinders.....totally cheesy but high tech special effects....Fred Dekker wrote it..(The Monster Squad, Night of the Creeps)it's not as awesome as those movies though....but William Katt pulls it along.....What do you guys think?

With Halloween starting to close in.. it is time to get serious about watching horror flicks..
"The Thing" (1982) is horror master John Carpenter’s remake of the 1951 classic "The Thing from Another World". I remember watching the original with my dad as a little kid and it scaried me bad. So I just had to see this remake when I found out about it. It definitely scaried me again, but what a great movie.
Carpenter chose early on that he did not want to merely repeat the shocks from the orginal film. So he decided to go back to the original short story by John W. Campbell Jr. entitled “Who Goes There?” Consequently, "The Thing" follows this source material much more closely than the 1951 film.
No longer a tale of a monster attacking from the outside, it is now a story of a threat coming from within. Instead of “Keep watching the skies” (the last line from The Thing from Another World)... the tagline for this remake should be “Keep watching the guy next to you.”
I've been a huge fan of Kurt Russell and enjoy most of his films from the 80's. With some of my Russell favs being "Escape From New York", "The Mean Season", and "the Best of Times" along with this flick.
"The Thing" (1982) is definitely one of the most intense and horrific films from the 80's. Outstanding special effects, superb casting, and brilliant direction all combine to create an awesome tale of paranoia and terror!

How about The Dead Zone (1983)
Christopher Walken stars as high school teacher Johnny Smith who crashes his VW bug into a overturned tanker tuck and spends five years in a coma.. only to discover he now has the gift of second sight. What an incredible gift.. right? But then he learns that the love of his life did not wait for him and has married someone else. Enter bitter and disgruntled Johnny.
Johnny basically has the gift of seeing your future through only a touch of the hand.. and this gift seem great until eventually he becomes entangled with a politician Greg Stillson (Martin Sheen). Johnny unfortunately foresees that if Stillson wins, this guy will lead the us into World War III. He must be stopped.
The book was by Stephen King .. the director of the movie was David Cronenberg who had has his own gift of creating unsettling and quite creepy flicks..

The Thing is the greatest remake ever! Carpenter grew up with the original movie that was flawed to began with and remade it for a new generation. It's just an awesome movie i adored since i was 15 years old.

Linda (Tawny Kitaen) who for some reason always reminds of girl rolling around on a hood of a car... becomes obsessed with the ouija board. Her obession began during an apparently harmless game party where the spirit of a young boy named David is contacted. After the party, Linda keeps on using the Ouija to talk to David, despite warnings from a friend that the young boy is actually an evil spirit in disguise. Soon it becomes obvious that a malevolent force has taken hold of Linda and soon people start to die....
'Witchboard' is both written and directed by Kevin Tenney who was also responsible for the horror flick 'Night of the Demons' (1987). I remember the first time I watched "Witchboard" that I spent most of it amazed that Stephen Nichols had two eyes.. since then I've continued to watch it every Halloween season.
and if you are an Ami Dolenz fan like me.. you have to watch "Witchboard 2" as a double feature!

Still haven´t seen Witchboard.
I watched Amityville 3-D (1983) What a disappointing flick! Even the early roles from Lori Loughlin and Meg Ryan couldn´t save this one. Couple of good scenes and that was it.

Witchboard is a good movie. I haven't seen parts 2 or 3. Netflix has part 3 available as instant watch. I watched part of Mother's Day last night. It hasn't been too bad so far, so I guess I'll finish it.

this thread has inspired me, though a little late. i've watched fright night and killer klowns from outer space so far. next up is night of the creeps on friday, wrapping up with night of the demons saturday night.
