Yeah i'd seen bits and pieces on tv as a kid. But never have I sat down and watched it in it's fullness and greatness.
How can you not help but sing and move watching this movie I had a hard time sitting still........John Lee Hooker and Boom Boom Aretha and Think Ray Charles is so freaking great even when he hangs the poster upside down....totally made me chuckle.(my mom played so much Ray Charles when I was a kid)
I do have to admit the car chase at the end got a little long for me......but all in all....
Jake and Elwood Blues get my vote for a pretty little great movie I really had never seen.

It rarely gets any better than this. Mix two sympathetic if rough heroes, a great story, terrific songs, and total motor madness, including the single greatest car chase in film history (best part: Elwood slams on the brakes just in time to avoid going off the Bridge to Nowhere, reverses too quickly, and backflips absurdly through the air, distracting the Nazis long enough to ensure they go off the edge themselves; the sheer absurdity of their fall combined with their horrified expression is priceless), and you've got the making of an all-time classic. It's a good plus that all the cameos serve a purpose and aren't just thrown in for the heck of it ("Pardon me, but we do have a strict policy concerning the handling of instruments; an employee of Ray's Music Exchange must be present.") Every single line's a classic, and Belushi's at his absolute pinnacle, even though he was stoned at some points during filming (the sunglasses thus came in handy at points and effectively masked the times he was out of it). I remember being utterly hooked the first time I saw it on TV in the late 80s, and it still holds up beautifully today. Comedy filmmakers, use this as your template.

To go further, does it ever get better than the likes of:
"I offered to help you. You refused to take our money. So I said, 'I guess you're really up #$#@*)(&*$ Creek.' YEEEEEEEOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!!" (etc., etc., etc.)
"You got us into this parking lot, pal; now you get us out!" "You want out of this parking lot? OK." (drives straight into the mall)
"Almost nine o'clock; we'd better get to work." (completely oblivious that the whole block blew up around them)
"If you say no, Elwood and I will come here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day of the week."
"Our Lady of Blessed Exceleration, don't fail me now!"
"Hey Jake, I gotta pull over." (veers off the interstate, three dozen cop cars crash, Mercer slams into the truck).
"Use of unnecessary violence in the apprehension of the Blues Brothers has been approved."
And so, so many more. It rarely gets better than this.

Great movie choice, Muffy. This might be my favorite movie of all time. Certainly in the Top 3. The comedy is hilarious and the music performances are amazing. CTCFM got the quotes started, so here's some more:
"Bring me four fried chickens and a Coke."
"The new Oldsmobiles are in early this year."
"It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?"

I see that we´ve been talking about John Landis flicks lately (this and Coming to America) and rightfully so. Amazing director!
