"Roman you @*#$(#^$*&~~!!!!!!" "What did he say?" "Go faster." "OK." (floors it)
"...what old man wouldn't want a little girl kissing his cheek?" "A dead one; Bill died in the car on the way over here." (everyone freaks out)..."How could you do that!?" "I didn't do it, he did!"
"I remember being traumatized about a story my Uncle Roy used to tell about a family that went into the woods and was attacked by a band of escaped army psychiatric patients who'd been subjected to violent, hellish, torturous, behavior-modification experiments..."
Even with occasional adult moments, this is what a good family film's supposed to be, something the current studio brass should consider. I wish more film fathers these days could be in the mold of Chet Ripley, a good man who sincerely loves his family and goes the extra mile to do things with them (critics may come down on Hughes for bashing authority figures sometimes, but really, few Shermerian parents are bad upon closer inspection--blinded sometimes, but not bad, and often when they do realize they've made serious mistakes, they're sincerely eager to make it up as quickly as possible). Candy's in top form as always and is just a force throughout the picture; you have to applaud him for being willing to be dragged all over the lake, whacked in the face with a golf ball, and have a bear jump up and down on top of him all in the same picture. The rest of the cast is more than up to par as well (the raccoons included), so it's really a bit of a tragedy this doesn't get as much mainstream respect, it seems.

Never seen this one. This is one of those dvd's that I plan to buy on several occasions and then put back in the shelf at the very last minute.
Seems like I'm missing out on a good movie.

TKO, get the dvd asap! While not my fave Aykroyd/Candy flick, itīs still good and entertaining comedy.

Glad you mentioned this Muffy. One of the Hughes penned movies I tend to overlook but like a lot: Candy & Ackroyd made for a great double act.
I haven't seen that Wilson Pickett video since...too long to remember, probably the when it was first relelased. Not surprised Dan Ackroyd got in there since he's a big soul and blues fan.
Listen to the Bar-Kay's 'Soulfinger' and tell me what Ackroyd movie related theme it reminds you of.

Good Riddance! that cracks me up!
I overlook that this is Hughes too Kash. I always remember that Lampoons Vacation is but not The Great Outdoors and it's totally Hughes!

Secret Admirer I like the way you lined up the quotes with the pictures....cracked me up! you just need a shot of the bbq on the deck and the hot dog quote and i'm happy!

I just watched this while up north in Wisconsin and it made the movie even that much better! My wife and I were loving it. I forget how many great lines Roman has! I think it's just the way Akroyd is acting but so many of his lines make me laugh out loud.
"watch out for those Wisconsin rattlers!"
"don't get too far behind or the indians will get ya!"
"jesus chet I'm half drunk here!"
It renewed my love for this movie!
Posted by Chris the CandyFanMan (Member # 3197) on :
And of course let's not forget other Roman masterpieces like:
"All kids like bugs...especially fireflies; their butts light up."
"Why would a minister hang up on me? I've been to his church."
"Nice hairdo you've got there Reg; is that supposed to be a neo-skunk thing?"
He may be a weasel, but you can't help love him nonetheless.

"All kids like bugs...especially fireflies; their butts light up"
This is one of the lines from the movie that always made me laugh soooooo hard!!!
a little side story: I grew up in Missouri chasing fireflies to either rub their butt on my face like war paint or trap them in jars. When I moved up here to Washington people here thought they were made up?? So many people had never seen one in their life??? Such fond summer memories I have with "lighting bugs" I can smell what they smell like right now.

That's a pretty gross story, Muffy. Thanks for sharing.

Secret Admirer... I'm thinking the firefly nation is glad Muffy moved to the Northwest! They were called lightning bugs in my area.. they probably changed their name just in case Muffy came looking for them.

They are small. It's like catching a lady bug. You haven't lived until you've done it! Of course that was when I was a kid and not scared of anything. Now days might be a little different!

It's that time again for a handful of viewings of this movie. I think I might have to watch it this weekend sometime. For me, summers = up north vacations. This movie is just perfect when you are longing for nights on the lake.

I went into the 1979 and older board and the spam was at least 6 pages in. I stopped at page 6. Geez, how you get rid of these jerks?
Posted by Muffy Tepperman (Member # 1551) on :
Haha thanks for digging this one gordon!that was a good laugh
I'm going to watch it again soon here too....maybe a double feature with Summer Rental!
This thread makes me miss the Rewind before all the spamming....6 pages....that's ridiculous....has the Rewind been linked on something?
Posted by gordongecko (Member # 4685) on :
No problem Muffy. Good call on double feature and I feel like a good third would be weekend at Bernie's! I didn't get to this movie yet, but this could be the weekend. Really wanting to watch it right now!!
Ya, I think the spam is really hurting the posting here. Things are slow, that's for sure.

With summer almost here, I've started to think about this movie a lot. It's a tradition to watch this movie every year around this time. It's also always with us when we rent a cabin up north in WI, in case we have a rainy day. This movie has become one of my all time favorites and can't wait to watch it again here soon.

Rewatched The Great Outdoors and while itīs not among my favorite Hughes films it has itīs moments.
I especially like the first 30 mins with Candy and Aykroyd firing on all cylinders. After that it īs not that funny and iīve never been a big fan of animal humour so that doesnīt help. I love Aykroydīs laugh which they couldīve used more.
The production had itīs problems right from the get go. Director Deutch said he was a wrong man for the job and Candy was upset because he had to shave his big beard which he thought was fitting for his character.
Hughes wanted to re-cut the film but Universal said thereīs no time because the summer release was just around the corner. The Great Outdoors did pretty well in the box office and has many devoted fans so who am i to blame it.
"You've got an awful lot of nerve, Roman, a lot of nerve."

Good fun but not my first go to John Candy Summer movie (God I wish it was still Summer) as that's still got to be Summer Rental for me!
It is certainly likeable enough and i do have it in my collection but I agree Atomik that the laughs do peter out in the later stages of the movie.

You guys watch your mouth! This movie is perfect in every way. Ok maybe not but I do love it. I think the end of the movie gets a little off course. I don't love the mine scene with the bear. And of course the love story is awkward. I do, however, think there are several great laughs in the second half. I don't actually know where the second half would start, but the scene at the bar with Roman and Chet is so great. "I have to go introduce "Mr Thick $%# to Mr Urinal Cake." "Go find yourself a spin cycle!" The bat scene! The old 96er! Either way, this movie is one that really connects with me. One of my all time favorites.

What about Summer Rental gordongecko are you a big fan of that as I've always found that to be blast to watch and i love the Jimmy Buffett track Turning Around from the soundtrack - https://youtu.be/vV0nwotenXg Posted by gordongecko (Member # 4685) on :
Oh yeah, I like Summer Rental quite a bit too. I think for me, Great Outdoors just really hits home. Because my vacations in the summer are heading up north to a lake usually, Great Outdoors makes me feel nostalgic. Plus it's supposed to take place in my home state of Wisconsin!

I love the trivia you have for all these Hughes movies, Atomik. You're really selling that book!
