This really isn't totally an 80's movie question.. but what movie scared you the most as a kid?
The one 80's movie that comes to mind for me is "The Shining".. the part where little Danny Torrance is riding his Big Wheel like device through the halls of the haunted hotel and runs into those twins and then later the woman in the tub still creeps me out a bit.
Overall.. I'm not a person that gets spooked very easily, but there is one movie that my parents accidently let me watch as a little kid that still haunts me to this day.
Looking it up.. at first it almost made me wonder if I needed to find it to chase my demons away. I mean it is listed as a made for tv movie with the likeable Doug McClure in the lead role. True it also starred Kim Novak who was awesome in the Alfred Hitchc0ck's "Vertigo", but she had done so many other less tormented roles to date. So just how scary could "Satan's Triangle" really be?
But by digging deeper and reading the user reviews .. I suddenly realized I was not alone in my traumatized horror of this movie from my childhood.. Here are a few excerpts from the user comments:
"Positively terrifying supernatural mystery"
"scariest 'derelict ship' movie that Hollywood has ever made."
"An ending that gave me nightmares!"
"Atmospheric, spooky TV chiller with some graphic images"
"I was about 12 years old and it's the only film that has really scared the living daylights out of me!"
Well you know I had to order it after reading all of that!
So what was your Satan's Triangle? Posted by Devolution (Member # 1731) on :

The ending of Sleepaway Camp, not the movie as a whole, but the ending! The whole setup, her being a dude, the *bleep* hanging there, her eating a guy like a praying mantis, her walk towards the camera, her distorted face and the eyes, those eyes was in my nightmares for years. Think I was 11 when I saw it. Bought the dvd a year ago or so, to confront my demons, and all the old chills came back. even tried to watch it with the audio commentary (which I always do) to try and de-mystify it, but it didn't help. I gave it away. Sometimes it's just that ONE thing that gets you. I use to be a big horror freak, and not even the most demented italo cannibal flick could scare me or gross me out. But Angela sure could.

As a very young child I would have nightmares of Frankenstein, then the Bloody Mary myth kept me awake nights-didn't help there was a HUGE mirror in my room!
I couldn't slept after seeing The Beast Within in the theater-but that didn't last long.
I can never watch movies like The Exorcist because I think stuff like that happens-plus I can't handle watching people move in unnatural ways-bent backwards etc. Totally freaks me out!
I get JAY LEE on the eye thing-I can't directly look at Lady Gaga's fish globe eyes in her Bad Romance vid.
I'll have to check out Satan's Triangle-I like atmospheric movies. Carnival of Souls is a good one, but you have to overlook the bloopers.

PS: Dead Birds (2004) is one I haven't watched all the way through. Talk about atmosphere-the creepy dread filled music plays continuously so you always feel tense. Then the ugly jumps out scaring the cr*p out of you! One of the demon images from this movie is in a lot of those "look closer" youtube vids.

Bamersy.. "Kolobos" was gruesome, but actually a great slasher flick.

your showing your true 80s loyalty there valley-cudos to you even though its 78. It still to me feels like an 80s film, maybe coz thats when i watched it. When jamie curtis is running through the streets trying to get away, it reminds me of that dream i sometimes have when your running and not getting anywhere.

I agree, my friend and I had a standing "Friday night date" for years, where we would rent horror movies-sometimes she would fall asleep leaving me to fend for myself Kolobos impressed us by being unique.
Just read up on Sleepaway Camp-may have to see it soon...

I watched way too many horror flicks when i was way too young
The Evil (1978)
I barely could breathe after i watched this one. Still cool haunted house flick and you can see the devil himself in the end.
Nightmare aka Nightmare in a Damaged Brain (1981)
This was actually banned here but somehow one of my friends cousin had uncut VHS copy. This surely damaged my brain. To this day i havenīt watched this one again.
Halloween II (1981)
Watched this one with my friends and everyone felt uneasy. I watched the flick through my fingers Still a classic sequel i enjoy every now and then.
There must be much more...

It depends on your taste and tolerance for horror movies Willy. I've been watching horror & cult movies all my life so I have a pretty high tolerance for them and it takes alot to really freak me out nowadays. So this movie is more funny to me now than scary and it doesn't really freak me out anymore. If you have yet to see it though I highly recommend giving it a try. Preferably late at night with all the lights out. It's a 50/50 toss up really. You'll either be freaked out by it, or you'll laugh at it's gratuitous cheesiness. Or perhaps even a little bit of both. It Just depends on your tolerance for spooky stuff.
..And another thing..I'm gonna go ahead and add "THE EXORCIST" to my list...who can honestly say they were'nt freaked out by that movie as a kid?

Phantasm scared the **** out of me!! I had nightmares for WEEKS the first time I saw it. That creepy azz Tall Man still spooks me lol.
Ghost Story also scared the crap out of me. I know, I know, a bunch of really, really old men sitting around telling ghost stories...woman seeking vengeance haunting them in different forms...probably shouldn't be scary. I was young when I watched it though and it terrified me.
And let's not forget It and that oh-so-scary Pennywise the clown. It was years before I could watch it all the way through. I think I read the book and then decided to brave the movie. I remember watching the first hour when I was a kid and that was all I could handle.

yeah i think you will like it pyro. Its got a decent story as well with twist at the end. Its nothing like saw or halloween or anything like those. Its in french, subtitled english. Its one of those movies that will mess up your brain just for a while until you remind yourself its not real and only a movie...you said your not easily shocked anymore but this movie isnt shocking its just really well done and i think you definately should get it.
Also try a zombie slashing, decapitating, leg flying no hold bar movie called dead snow - its about a group of norweigian medical students who go up the mountains to a cabin for a gettaway and encounter some neo natzi zombies who have one thing in mind - ripping them apart and eating them - its the gorriest, funniest zombie film ive ever seen apart from Brain dead which is another must see for you. im looking forward to hearing how you like them. Just trust my judgement. Ill put up some covers for you pyro. I think you will absolutely love brain dead by peter jackson which is filmed in new zealand - that is absolutely hilarious and i would be really surprised if youve seen anything like it coz i hadnt seen anything close to it at all.

Pryo.. I haven't seen "Dolls" in years, but remember it being a great movie.
pettyfan.. the backstory on "Magic".. my parents were out of town and I talked my older brother into renting it for us to watch that night. I definitely slept with the light on that night. I need to watch it again.. looking back.. wild that Anthony Hopkins starred in it.
Bamersy.. I really want to watch "Kolobos" again now that you mentioned it. This movie would definitely make you think twice before signing up for a reality show. ha

I have seen Brain Dead Willy...and being that I agree with you about that film being very good..I will add the other 2 you mentioned on my "to watch" list. because I haven't seen those other 2 yet. I'm a little put off by the cover art to "Dead Snow". It looks to be one of those trite and overdone Blood & Guts "Hostel" type movies that have been done to death at this point. And quite frankly, they bore me. But I'll probably go ahead and check it out anyway just for curiosity sake.
That Martyrs movie looks to be something a little more up my alley though. I will definetly be giving that one a viewing. And of course I'll report back my reviews on both films after watching them.

Avoid Flashdance then.
I certainly didn't enjoy Mr Barlow or the wandering undead turning up at your window in Salem's Lot.
In the 80s I wanted to join The Ghostbusters (as you do) so was into the occult from an academic viewpoint. Even asked the librarian to order me a copy of Tobin's Spirit Guide.
Rosemary's Baby is quite out there, not just because its directed by that corrupt little deviant Roman Polanski. But primarily because it shatters the myth that old people can't be evil in movies. Poor Mia Farrow, so hard to find an apartment in the first place and when she does its infested by Satanists!

Despite making me s**t scared it got me into scary movies, used to stay up at night watching films on a little 12" black/white tv as a kid, even Amityville was scary on a black/white tv...
As an adult the only films that have given me a taste of what Poltergeist did to me as a kid was Ring and Ring 2. Saw "Ring" (original) on tv late at night and I was so creeped out I had to stay awake all night until it got light outside before I felt safe enough to get some sleep! a week later and "Ring 2" creeped me out almost as much.
Have to say though that the remakes of horror movies, like Amityville and the Japanese ones into Hollywood ones just don't have the impact of the originals, even when they used the same director for the Hollywood version.
Anyone on the hunt for some recent decent horror (ie the past 10 years or so) should check out "[Rec]", the original Spanish 2007 version because the 2008 "Quarrantine" is rubbish in comparison. And on the foreign horror streak; Ring, Ring 2, The Grudge, Dark Water, The Eye, Audition.

It has elements of revenge, elements of hostel but has just that-elements. It wont bore you and is unpredictable to a degree. It frightened the hell out of me and caused me a lot of uneasiness afterwards. I watched it on my own one night not knowing a thing about it other than the title and i think thats often the best way - no expectations, no predictions. I think the fact you need to follow subtitles adds to the overall effect. i saw the decent and didnt really find it that scary, just a little unique and new.

Totally! Didn't help that we have a huge TV in the bedroom-was almost as bad as when I had my Bloody Mary/mirror fears! Ringu was just as good if not better.
The Ring had some scary moments-like getting the fly off the screen, and the warped faces of the scared to death people. The hokey part was who exactly was making those phone calls? Did creepy well girl have a cell and a GPS on the video tape??

"Dolls" was pretty scary to me as a kid also. My good friend's mom used to collect old china dolls and actually had a whole bedroom filled to the brim with them. The first time I saw the movie was at that girl's house and we were too afraid to go upstairs because of her Mom's doll collection. Whenever I went to her house after that, her older brother would tease us by putting the dolls next to us when we were sleeping and leave us scary notes that were supposedly written by the the dolls just to freak us out....The movie doesn't scare me anymore, but the music in it still kinda creeps me out.

Scariest thing that I've ever seen, and it's still spooky even after all these years is the segment entitled "A Drop of Water" in Mario Bava's 1963 omnibus horror film "Black Sabbath" ("I Tre Volti della Paura"). Bava, quite possibly the most underrated genius director in world cinema, takes the simplest of things (a buzzing fly, a dripping faucet, a flickering light, a dead body on a bed) and just scares the bejeezes out of you with the way he puts the elements together. It's all creepy, oppressive, nerve-wracking atmosphere, and then... Well, it's unforgettable. Let's just say so many folks of a certain age love this--and with good reason: It's about the scariest 20 minutes or so on film. Ever. I saw it for the first time when I was about 13, and I've seen it a bunch of times since then (Ignore the folks complaining on amazon.com about the Starz/Anchor Bay DVD's being the Italian version with--shudders--subtitles. This segment has very little dialogue, and great horror films work in any language anyway). To all the kids who adore these idiotic modern gorefest remakes masquerading as fright films, I say, "Check out what real horror filmmaking is all about. (And it's almost 50 years old too!)" :-)

I haven't posted to this thread in a while and may have already mentioned this but.......Dead Birds is a movie I haven't been able to watch all the way through. They play this creeepy music that never lets up so you can't fully relax even if nothing is happening on the screen. It's all about the atmosphere.
I've also thought Nosferatu was scary-it totally made sense when they made the movie about the making of it where he was supposed to be a vamp for real. (Shadow of the Vampire)
Halloween night we always have Night of the Living Dead on the TV. It's tradition and not gory you have to worry the trick or treaters will freak out.

Always unnerving the first time anyone sees it, and was especially so for I: Michael slowly and ominously materializes out of the void behind Laurie after letting her view his "work" for the evening thus far and almost lets her have it. The dark set and frightful music add to the terror of the moment, which then stays at a nightmarish fever pitch from that point on until Loomis blasts him off the balcony a good 5-10 minutes later--seemingly an eternity for viewers. And indeed all through the picture, knowing what Michael could do or is about to do makes it scarier than just showing him do it outright, which the people in charge of continuing the series regretably forget to our detriment.

I love it, Pyromantic--someone else on here who has been emotionally scarred for life by "Black Sabbath"! Thanks for seconding my motion that it is so scary that you will never, ever forget it. That movie has been damaging souls for years--and yet it still exists basically under the radar in like a super-secret club where folks whisper about it and warn others. Your disclaimer ("No one warned me...") is so very dead on! ROFLMAO Folks, take it from us. It is highly recommended, but be careful. You might wind up in therapy or with huge bills for prescription sleeping pills because it will mess you up big time. Magic (1978): I saw this creeper back about 25 years ago when i was 4 as it was one of the first movies we ever watched when me moved from Arizona to San Diego to live, after that nice pleasant stay for a month in one of the howard johnson hotels we moved in the house and my parents with big brother rented the movie, it scared the bejesus out of me and made me afraid of dummies even of my brother's Mortimer dummy whom i ask to put it away sometimes.
Making Contact (a.k.a. Joey): Who remembers this one? it has a scary ventriloquist dummy in it where it's possessed by a demon that terrorizes a psychic kid after his dad dies and it threatens his mother, neighbor and city with demons from another dimension. I Watched it on video when i was 6 years old and it scared the bejesus out of me as well like Magic did and the dummy is scary as Fats.
Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night: Who remembers this dark and warped 1987 animated movie from Filmation that had James Earl Jones? i saw this in theaters after christmas when it came out when i was 6 and it scared the hell out of me with it's darkness and that horrifying scene where the title emperor's minion tortures the human Pinocchio as he's turning back into a puppet, very scary stuff.

I like "Magic" (Anthony Hopkins is an excellent actor; I could watch him in anything.) but I think that two other ventriloquist dummy movies are much, much better and scarier: "The Ventriloquist's Dummy" episode of the classic "Dead of Night" (1945) with Sir Michael Redgrave and especially a little gem called "Devil Doll" (1964). It was ridiculed by the MST3K gang back in the day, but it's really weird and chilling.

I could never do it justice here - and mamamiasweetpeaches will know EXACTLY what I mean....
"Children! Children! I smell children!!"

Paul.. you were spooked by the Child Catcher from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"?

How about those creepy flying monkeys from "The Wizard of Oz".. especially if you are watching it while listening to Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon"?

Yep. Getting the bejeepers scared out of you at the age of seven by him is a rite of passage.

quote:Originally posted by Crash: I love it, Pyromantic--someone else on here who has been emotionally scarred for life by "Black Sabbath"! You might wind up in therapy or with huge bills for presciption sleeping pills because it will mess you up big time. (If that isn't an almost irresponsible invitation to disaster, Pyro, I don't know what is!)
Exactly Crash, this is one I can agree with you till the end on. Black Sabbath is a horror film in a class all it's own. I really do not think I've ever seen it's equal. Indeed it is a highly recommended film to see for any true horror movie fanatic. But a caution for alone viewing in the dark late at night is certainly required here.

In a lot of ways The Secret of NIMH can be a prolonged nightmare for younger viewers. It certainly had me on edge for my first viewing during recess in 2nd grade. From the almost nightmarish tractor bearing down on the mice, to the rather spooky owl, to pretty much the entire last 20 minutes, it still has me a little hesitant to watch it all the way through today (but give credit to Don Bluth where credit is due; the man has never been afraid to be scary for the sake of telling a good story, be it the deaths of loved ones, full-on pogroms, or even complete planetary destruction).

Wasn't everyone who saw it as a kid?

I'd have to agree with Veronica. Steven King's "IT" scared the hell out of me! Another not as scary, but very creepy would have to be the "wheelers" from the movie Return to OZ. Man those things are just wrong!

It is the season. Once again, I highly recommend Black Sabbath with the scariest 20 minutes or so ever put on film.

Crash, correct me if I am wrong but I believe the band took their name from the movie.

Right on BL. That is absolutely correct.

Is that the one with Boris Karloff?

Nightmare on Elm Street was the creepiest I ever saw. I had chills through most of it except for a spot when it got real quiet during the movie and someone ripped a fart loud enough for everybody to hear it. I'll never forget that.

Yes indeed.

my orginal picks I posted on page 1 of this thread still hold up for me. And yes, Black Sabbath just happens to be one of them. So I agree completely.

The only movie that really scared the crap out of me was The Exorcist. I think it is because I was raised Roman Catholic and think that that kind of thing could happen. A few others are kinda scary to me, but not enough to keep me up at night- Poltergeist is one of them. My husband thinks I'm weird, lol.

I have yet to see the unedited, not formatted-for-TV version of the Excorcist. I only watched it on TBS, I think, when I was in college. And that one time was enough lol.

I saw The Hearse as a kid and I thought it was pretty freaky! The woman in the movie kept running into this hearse and the driver would keep creeping around after her. This was a pretty good flick though.
