Devolution here,

My brother in Law has been dating someone from England and a few weeks ago they got into a fight over the name of the movie with Sean Astin and Pauly Shore, which I said was Encino Man but I told him that in England, it might be called something different.

It is it's called California Man...

My question is, what are names of movies in Europe that have different names other than "Flying High" for Airplane!

Thanks

We are DEVO

I once saw a movie called Big Man on Campus, that I watched while in a hotel room in the early nineties. But when I tried to find a copy of it, it turned out the UK name was The Hunchback Hairball of LA.

Very annoying, but I managed to get my ex-rental VHS copy. (Sadly, long since gone).

In the 80s I watched a fab film here in England called 'Maybe Baby', found out it was called 'For keeps' in the States.

oh and when on holiday in the States watched 'The Mighty Ducks', was called 'Champions' in England (boring title).

Most obvious one I can think of was Taking Care Of Business (1990) was known on first release here as Filofax.

Which, as a title, makes waaaaaaay more sense.

Teen Wolf was called 'The boy from the future' in some countries to try to capitalise on the success of BTTF.

I think that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I mean would we hold Teen Wolf in the same regard now if we never knew it by Teen Wolf and only knew it by The boy from the future. It just doesn't make sense.

Fantastic topic, great lists all. Two more that come to my cloudy mind: "Tenebrae" a/k/a "Tenebre" was released theatrically in the U.S. as "Unsane." And "Manhunter" (from the book "Red Dragon") was released to network TV in the U.S. as "Red Dragon: The Curse of Hannibal Lecter."

Noms, I have posted this somewhere before but I am from Australia and have always known it as Wrong Bet. I tried to track it downa couple of years ago and bought it off Amazon as Lionheart. As soon as I received the DVD, I chucked it in the DVD player and during the opening credits where the movie title is displayed it says Full Contact. Very weird hey.

So now, AWOL = Lionheart = Wrong Bet = Full Contact.

I wonder if there are any more names for this movie.

AWOL aka LIONHEART aka WRONG BET aka FULL CONTACT is alson known in some territories as LION THE STREET FIGHTER!

Posted by Bernie_Lomax (Member # 8571) on :

WOW, another one. That's 5 names for the same movie. That has got to be a record.

All those damn names, and not ONE decent dvd release [Embarrassed]

Posted by oneyedwilly (Member # 8730) on :

did you guys know that you can get cheaper movies online depending on what title you put in - thats just insane...maybe its more dependent on where its comiing from inc postage etc but ive done a search on amazon and zoo and some movies are loads cheaper if you use an alternative title - ridiculous and zeron logic huh? [Confused]

Posted by oneyedwilly (Member # 8730) on :

an example is this - i looked for happy gilmore which in french was called termina golf and it was loads cheaper using the french title but in the description it said it had option of watching in english so i bought it and when i got it it said happy gilmore on the cover anyway (although it was in french) but then i just changed the lang to eng - this is nuts!
