This a personal favorite of mine. As most of us here can agree, Chris Columbus was one fabulous writer before he became a fabulous director, and while this may not be as well remembered as his other works from the same time frame, it still holds up pretty well today. The cast might not have done that much before or after, but they fit very nicely, and Nicholas Rowe seems pretty spot on as the soon to be world's greatest detective. The special effects are still pretty strong under today's lenses (I've read the stained glass knight the priest thinks is coming after him was Hollywood's first entirely computer generated character) and unlike today's similar films don't overpower the story, which should also get credit for being brave enough to be dark and bittersweet at times (the other plus of the 80s, when bad guys could willfully endanger or even try and kill minors if they were evil enough). Throw in perhaps the best after-the-end-credits scene of the decade, one that more than sets up the adult Holmes's path in life, depending on how long it ended up taking him to figure it out on his own, and what's there to complain about?

"Young Sherlock Holmes" is a great movie. The scene that always stands out to me is the one where Watson gets attacked by the pastries. My brother looks exactly like that actor btw...
There are a lot of similarities between "YSH" and the Harry Potter series. I wonder if JK Rowling was a fan?

Liked this. It's one of those 'almost great' movies that just misses the mark. I think the Pyramid stuff was too heavily borrowed from 'Temple of Doom'. Music was pretty good, too.

I bought this one about six months ago and watched about a half hour and fell asleep (not an indictment on the movie, but rather life with kids and the blessedness of two hours alone...sleep always comes quick! ). It was a good movie though and fully look forward to going back to it, expecially now that I know to look out for some end of credits moment!
I fell asleep right after the scene where Young Holmes had been challenged to solve some mystery in the school and all the other kids were chasing after him and watching.
I may have to try to find some time today before the Grammy's...

I too also brought this about six months ago. It suddenly popped into my head and I thought "I haven't seen that in years!"
I believe the CGI piece with the stained glass window was done by Pixar. Established in the mid 80's, this was one of their earliest bits of work.
Also The one that played Watson is Brian Cox's Son.
A truly excellent and, IMO, underrated movie.

This was on sky the other week, I had never seen it before and thought I would see what my brother was going on about (YSH is one of his faves) and I can say I will be getting it...can't believe i had never seen it before now. Really enjoyed it.

i loved this, remember catching this one night on a christmas period in 1990... Loved the trippy out scenes.

Watched Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) or Pyramid of Fear as it was called here, yesterday. It was a pretty good film, i must say. I liked how the film looked, it´s set in 1870 London. Nice settings and atmosphere. The whole cast did a wonderful job and i loved the old school special effects. The hallusination sequences were awesome, especially the "Stained Glass Knight".
I have one minor complaint. The plot included lots of coincidences, i know that it´s basically a kids flick but kids are clever, they´ll notice if you take too many shortcuts
I like the way the story continues during the end credits and how they set up the sequel. Too bad that it never came to be.
