Saw this on the Encore channel tonight and had to make a thread about it because I love it!
I could go on and on about how great this movie is. From the opening montage at the school to the last scene where Samantha finally gets to celebrate her birthday, the movie never gets boring and is full of 80's perfection.
Anthony Michael Hall as "Farmer Ted" is the most hilarious portrayal of a teenage geek ever (didn't we all know a guy in high school like him?), Samantha's entire family - especially her little brother Mike and her Grandparents always make me laugh, and you gotta love Joan Cusack with her scoliosis brace. But the most memorable is probably Long Duk Dong and his "American Style Girlfriend."
How can you not love this movie??

Veronica....relax, would you? We have seventy dollars and a pair of girls underpants. We're safe as kittens!
JAAAAKKKKE!!!

Actually, I've always thought of myself as a Jake Ryan in-training..well....except without the Porsche, the sideburns, and of course the sweater vest...

"Unbelievable. You make someone a bridesmaid and they sh*t all over you."
Valley, do you have Jake's awesome cargo pants??
Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
Look..when you think about it....do you really want to date Jake Ryan? I mean after that Long Duk Dong house party .. Jake is probably still grounded!

This is true, Valley....But maybe Farmer Ted had an "ultimate set of tools" and got the house put back together for Jake before the parents got home?

uh..I think you've watched "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" one too many times to think any tools could get that house back in shape before Jake's dad got home. Also, that 'ultimate set of tools' didn't work too well on Jefferson's car come to think of it!

Maybe Jake is in solitary confinement along with Long Duk Dong who was in trouble for driving Grandpa's "automobile" into a lake!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Love this film. I saw it for the first time on TV, late at night, hidden away in the graveyard shift (that's how I saw the breakfast Club too actually). I now own, not one but TWO I love Jake ryan t-shirts haha.
One of the best things about it is that they make Jakes popular cheerleading girlfriend nice. The rival popular girl is always mean which is why we root for the underdog.
Farmer Ted is brilliant....'they say it's your birthday....it's my birthday too'.
I took a copy to work to show the teenagers I worked with and they all loved it (I hope they don't re make it....not the teenagers, Hollywood)
Great thread, you've made me want to go and watch it NOW.

One of my favourite 80's films, never get tired of watching it...Farmer Ted is a legend.
In fact i'll watch it right now.

Veronica and Valley, you guys named two of may favorite scenes: JAAAAKE! (geek screeching under the glass table) & Joan Cusack in the brace when Farmer Ted is on the bus and she kind of tilts herself toward him and says "Ahh...yeah." Cracks me up...every...time.
I love it because of
"You're in the parking lot in front of my church." "You own a church?"
"Geek, can I be honest with you?" "Not if you're gonna insult me."
"It's kinda cool, the way she's always lookin' at me." "Maybe she's retarded."
They are the kind of lines that just never get old. As funny as the first time I saw it.

For some reason I always crack up when Randy's guy friend snaps his fingers at Farmer Ted when he says, "She's totally serious, a**wipe."

I like when Long Duck is talking about Gradpa's "hyena" at the dinner table...

An incredibly bodacious and 80's move if ever there was one!
"No more yanky my wanky! The Donger needs food!"

that guy is cool. Didn't he go on to get killed in Halloween 5 (1989), portraying a Fonzie wannabe?

That is exactly why I love this group right there! I knew I had seen him somewhere else! He was trying to throw down with Michael Myers for scratching his boss car! It has to be him!

that's the thing about 16 Candles everyone quotes it all the time........my friends that aren't even 80's nerds......"Dong..........Dong......(clap clap)where is my automobile?"
My fav when Grandpa Howard is describing Dong to the police on the phone....."no he's not retarded"
16 Candles was so not politically correct!

Valley what is up with you bringing me up with quotes in movies involving underwear! haha

Omg and when her Grandparents answer the phone when Jake calls in her bedroom "filthy language" gets me rolling every time!

Ha.. I guess I was just having a 'theme' night...
Look, this information cannot leave this thread..Ok? It would devastate my reputation as a dude...
....I've never bagged a babe. I'm not a stud.
There are so many great quotes and hilarious moments in "Sixteen Candles"!

Valley, Muffy has two boyfriends and they lust wimp blood, so quit bugging her or she'll sic them all over your weenie a**! ha!!

Posted by Muffy Tepperman (Member # 1551) on :
what about the heartfelt moments too
"that is why they call them crushes if they were easy they would call them something else!"
I got to see this as a midnight movie on the big screen a few years ago...and I remember writing on here how little things stuck out in my mind i never noticed before.
One was noticing the nail polish in the girls lockers and I remember in the theater noticing the cheesy dj at the dance sorta looking like a Culture Club wannabe....no matter how many times I have seen it, it gave it a new light. I was lucky. If only I wasn't drunk when I saw Goonies at midnight and kept nodding off....stupid decision!!!
Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
Muffy...I totally enjoy my movie watching set-up in my basement, but I will agree that seeing some of these 80's classics on the big screen is a completely different experience. I wish there was a theater in my area similar to The New Bev in LA. I even like the midnight showing idea..kind of like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" from the 80's.
Posted by Veronica Sawyer (Member # 2221) on :
There's a movie theatre in Chicago called the Music Box that shows 80's movies every weekend at midnight. Sometimes, they even have stars or directors there at the screening as well. I've seen "Nightmare on Elm Street" while Robert Englund was there and "Friday the 13th" with most of the cast there.

Where is it at Veronica?! I must go! Is there schedule that you know of or do you just have to check on Thrusdays or something? Does it get pretty crowded (hard to get tickets?)?
Posted by Veronica Sawyer (Member # 2221) on :
You can find a schedule of events there for upcoming movies. I think you can join a mailing list too. Tonight they're showing "Neverending Story."
Tickets are actually really easy to come by and the theatre is really cool too. Usually, every year in October they do a 24 hour movie marathon of horror movies and invite a ton of actors and directors. I didn't go last year, but I did go in 2008 and it was a blast! Great mixture of people and everyone gets really into the movies. People always clap during the opening credits when they see an actor they like and that kind of thing. It's definitely my favorite place to see movies!
Posted by Muffy Tepperman (Member # 1551) on :
Veronica! that is very cool........ours is just an independent theater that does those movie nights "on occasion"
I've wanted to make a vacation To New Bev ever since Phil and TNUC started posting the shows!
I'm jealous
Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
The New Bev has "Happy Birthday To Me" playing Saturday night 1/30!

Sixteen Candles was just on Starz so I had to watch it. Still an excellent movie all these years later. Does anyone remember a 2 record or 2 tape set of the soundtrack what was out years ago. I remember seeing it in Sam Goody's when I was in high school but then I could only find the cassette with 4 or 5 songs on it.

One of my favorite quotes, "She's totally serious, assswipe!". I try to work it into conversations all the time, but usually it never applies and then people look at me funny.
