Im sort of on the fence with this one. I didnt love it but I didnt hate it either.

This is a classic, you either love it or hate it, its one of those mel brooks greats (the guys a genius) i loved the part when lonestar and dark helmet (cool name) are fighting and accidently kill one of the sound/camera men, i loved the improvisation around that scene, my advice is if you like humour to get this as its a great movie (note the take on the classic charlton heston movie planet of the apes at the end) "spaceballs, oh **** there goes the planet" classic!!! may the schwartz be with you

Quite seriously, this film helped shape who I am. That may sound a bit bizarre, but it's true; through here I saw for the first time in my life how powerful great comedy can be, and that there are no rules to doing so whatsoever. Add in a fantastic cast and an actually quite solid for a parody story (that's why Mel was the best parodier in the business; he made sure there was a strong foundation to hang the lunacy on), and you've got easily the makings of a cult classic that it's become. How many other films have had just about every line become a classic (sure, a lot on this site, but that this can be included therein speaks a lot).

Funny in parts. Not as uniformly strong as 'Blazing Saddles' and 'Young Frankenstein' but fairly entertaining. Made as a loose Star Wars parody far too late. I remember when it came out wondering why they hadn't made it 5 years earlier. Rick Moranis steals the show.

Ill agree with that. "Close But No Cigar". I enjoyed it and laughed some, but I guess after stuff like YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and BLAZING SADDLES Ive set my expectations pretty high.
The funny thing is I watched the movie a half hour by myself and then my brother in law visited and watched the last hour with me and he could quote just about the whole movie! Watching it with him made the movie more enjoyable cuz hes a huge fan and I was sort of feeding off his energy.
My favorite part was Rick Moranis playing with the dolls and according to IMDB Trivia that part was improvised by Moranis.

It's worth pointing out that one thing this movie didn't have that Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein did have, is Gene Wilder in his prime. He was cinematic gold all by himself!
Comedies are always better when you watch them with other people.
The Spaceballs quote that gets me every time...
Dark Helmet: What's the matter with this thing, what's all that churning and bubbling, you call that radar screen? Colonel Sandurz: No, sir. We call it Mr Coffee. Care for some? Dark Helmet: Yes. I try to stay away from comparing this one to Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety, Young Frankenstein & History of the World Part I because most of the comedies ever made suffer at the feet of these classics, especially Saddles and Frankenstein. When I drift from the comparison, take my brain out and just watch, I truly enjoy it for its own merits.

It's still ok..though it has lost some of it's flair over the years..But still easily ranks as one of Mel Brook's best works. I remember seeing this in the theatre way back when came out..I had never heard louder laughter before in any movie I've seen before of since.

And so, so many more. I must admit that it was another few years after my first viewing of this that I saw A New Hope for the first time, so I initially as a 7 year old thought this was entirely an original--albeit heavily skewered--piece.

I loved Spaceballs as a kid and I still love it today. When I first watched it, I didn't understand that it was a parody of Star Wars. I just thought there were a lot of odd coincidences. Once I understood it was a parody, it became even funnier to me. I'll find myself using quotes from the movie in everyday life from time-to-time and everytime I watch Star Wars I keep waiting for Obi Wan to squeeze in a "use the Schwartz" line.
