I was reading Jay Lee's thread about the top 5 movies from every year, and realised that sometimes, one good movie year can define the era for decades to come. For me, its 1984.

1984

The Terminator
Ghostbusters
The Karate Kid
Beverly Hills Cop
Footloose
Gremlins
Dune
Greystoke: The Legend Of Tarzan
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
A Nightmare on Elm Street
The Last Starfighter
Sixteen Candles

New takes on old generes, films which not only stand up today, but are still considered favourites of new and old fans alike: 1984, the year that made the decade IMO.

Hey now, you can't be leaving out the greatest ever gangster film from the greatest 80's year, Once Upon A Time In America [Smile]

Brilliant thread Kash and I almost couldn't agree more. I always thought 1980-85 was the TRUE "Golden Age" of movies. I know you could only name a few, but you can't leave out Police Academy (much funnier than the sequels allow you to remember). The fun ride of Romancing The Stone, the "hey at least it's better than one I & V Star Trek III: The Search For Spock, Red Dawn "Wolverines!", and the classics Splash (Levy, Howard and Candy never better), The Natural, 2010, Bachelor Party and the year the world finally changed for Nerds! We will save 82 & 83 for later...Great topic Kash!

Thanks Earl Keese, some great movies there, always liked the Star Trek saga, even The Motion Picture: "V-ger" and Red Dawn. You're right about Police Academy, they made so many lame sequels that I barely remember the original, must watch it again someday.

TBNMFU, well remembered, though I'm a Sergio Leone fan, Once Upon A Time In America isn't one of my favourite gangster movies, its a great film but you can only watch it very rarely, as you need about half a day to see it all.

Thanks Spreadking, what's Lovelines about? I must admit, its one that I've not seen.

Yeah, well when I first watched it many moons ago it was a two parter on channel 4. So that's the way I've always continued to watch it, over 2 nights [Smile] It's my fave film after The Karate Kid films [Big Grin]

Kash,

Very nice. It's going to take some time to do this one...

It's hard to argue with 1984... Good points.

1984 is exactly the year I would have picked too. I can remember every movie I saw that year. I think '85 was actually the pinnacle year for music in the '80s, but '84 is still the year that typifies the '80s for me best.

Agreed KASH...actually, when I think 80's, regarding both movies and music, I generally only consider 1980 to 85 to be the years I truly loved...with some obvious exceptions of course.

You are absolutely right Kevdugp...it really is all about 80-85.

Do you go with the absolute CLASSICS of 1980?
Empire Strikes Back
Airplane!
The Blues Brothers
Urban Cowboy
The Shining
Caddyshack
Friday The 13th
Xanadu ...wait what?

The Originals of 1981?
Raiders of the lost Ark
Arthur
Stripes
Chariots of Fire
Clash of the Titans
Neighbors (you just knew that was coming)
Escape from New York

The Blockbusters of 1982?
E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial
Tootsie
Rocky III
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
48 Hrs.
Poltergeist
First Blood
Conan The Barbarian
Tron
Blade Runner (not a blockbuster originally, but what? Like It's not going to get an honorable mention?)
Fast Times at Ridgemont High &
The Road Warrior

The Fun year of 1983?
Return of the Jedi
Trading Places
Wargames
Octopussy
Risky Business
National Lampoon's Vacation
Superman III
Jaws 3-D
Blue Thunder
Porky's II: The Next Day
Twilight Zone - The Movie
The Outsiders
The Right Stuff
A Christmas Story
Valley Girl

I think what happened for me was that all of those years leading right up to 1984 just rode a wave of good feelings and loving what I was seeing and 84 just poured out some of the best of all thos years.

1985 was just as much fun with
Back to the Future
Rambo
Rocky IV (2 Stallones...1 year...equals awsomeness)
The Goonies
Spies Like Us
Breakfast Club
Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Commando
Weird Science
Sliverado
Ladyhawk
The Sure Thing

I think about these years and I just think "Wow...They just do not put together "years" like that anymore. I mean not even close ya' know?"

I pretty much lay the blame right at the doorstep of 1989 and the "What was that and what just happened?" feeling with
Indiana Jones and the last Crusade
Back to the Future II
Ghostbusters II
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Karate Kid III
Fletch Lives

Almost like it was the year of the worst sequels we could possibly make.

Yeah...80-85...that was it. Such a good time to run down to the theatre to find one of these waiting for you!

I like Back To The Future II and Ghostbusters II better than the first films -

All of them definitely watchable and in some ways enjoyable for me too (okay well maybe not Karate Kid III, I will stick on that one). Maybe there was just something about the other movies at the time wrapped around the originals that made them a little more memorable for me. [Smile]

Don't forget, 1989 was also the year Milli Vanilli hit the scene in America. [Wink]
