The first half is pretty enjoyable! When they get to space, the movie dies a horrible death! Joe Dante must have had a brain meltdown or something!

First half is great, middle quarter is OK, last quarter is pretty bad.

Stop stop stop! You're killing me! I used to salute your name when it appeared in a thread... now I know that you need to be chained to a chair for a week and made to catch up on missed movies - FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!

Wasn't entirely Dante's fault.
I agree with what's been said: first third great; second third good; final third weak.

Okay. I watched it. And I must agree- starts out well enough but has a terrrrrrrrible ending.
Would love to hear the story on how everything went so terribly wrong. I guess they wanted to put them in space but werent quite sure what to have happen to them when they GOT there?

Ahhhhh...I see....they were gonna release that sucker wether it was finished or not. And it was not. OUCH!
Not terribly impressed but it was fun to see River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke (as well as that "Cindy Mancini" chick!) as little kids!

They started shooting without a finished script. They were shooting more than they needed as they went. The studio moved up the release date and just said to Dante "finish it" even though it wasn't done. Dante then cut the film with what he had (leaving out TONS of good stuff that has now vanished into the ether). The studio then released the movie the weekend of 'Live Aid' and it died.
The music is great; the opening scenes are great, but the film just falls apart in act 3.
Incidentally, the US release doesn't feature the kids walking to school the day after the first dream, which is crazy because it was such a good scene (and my personal favorite). The scene is now an extra in the DVD's (even the UK version), but I hated it's absence so much that I just burned myself a new copy and inserted the scene back in.
