Ok, maybe this has been discussed here but I bet many of you will agree the movie covers/posters for 80's movies were so awesome! They just have this fun playful feeling to them. Many are pretty quirky too. You don't see too many movie covers like the ones that were made in the 80's. What are some of your favorites? Also, does anyone know the cheapest, best site for ordering old movie posters?

I know there's a lot of different artwork for the original A Nightmare On Elm Street, but the pic above is similar to what was used for the original rental tape released by 20th Century Fox in 1986 here in Holland. It always made me feel a little uneasy.. and it's not because of the Freddie Krueger silhouette. I guess it's the feeling that anything could happen in that normal house in a normal neighborhood to anyone who happens to fall asleep. (and we all do that on a regular basis)
Scary stuff indeed.. especially when you're still a kid.

i've got that omega dvd release of zero boys johnny,i purchased a few from the nico mastorakis collection - blind date,sky high,grandmother's house & in the cold of the night. great quality releases but you're right the new artwork for zero boys can't even compete with the original.

i have some dvds in that Nico Mastorakis collection too. Not all though. I don't have Sky High, Glitch and Bloodstone unfortunately. Grandmother's House and In The Cold Of The Night are fun little thrillers. I wasn't too crazy about Blind Date though.

Runaway is a classic sci-fi thriller. I own the R2 finnish dvd.
I love Nico Mastorakis movies and own Hired to Kill and Island of Death on R2 dvd (gonna check them out soon) and The Time Traveler, Sky High, The Zero Boys, Terminal Exposure, The Wind, Bloodstone, Grandmotherīs House and In the Cold of the Night on vhs.

I've never seen Terminal Exposure and Hired to Kill either, but just took a quick look at the trailers on Youtube. Looks like fun b-movie mayhem indeed.
I also have Nightmare at Noon in that Mastorakis collection. Another good little b-movie with some great action scenes and a truly magnificent cast which includes George Kennedy, Bo Hopkins, Wings Hauser, Brion James and Kimberly Beck (from Friday the 13th part 4).

Young Warrior, great pull on Gouhlies! I have never seen this but as a kid in the video rental store, that cover always grabbed my eye.

i like david keith,i've heard of tennessee buck before but never seen it,also never realised he directed it,looks like fun.
freddys revenge had some terrific artwork,i know a lot of folk didn't particulary like the second installment but i've always been rather fond of it,i thought the first 4 were all great.
dream child was where it all went slightly wrong for me.
i agree great artwork for my science project and the running man,i miss the old 80s arnie flicks,the last stand his latest looks ok but in comparison to the running man,predator,etc it does look pretty tame.

That Tennessee Buck could easily be added to the 'VHS yet to be released on DVD' thread too.
I still have it on video somewhere. It's pretty funny actually. It's more some sort of odd parody on adventure flicks spiced up with some violence and nudity (provided by the lovely Kathy Shower).

I own Sorority House Massacre UK dvd, Savage Streets & The Gate scandi dvdīs, 976-Evil US VHS tape and Busted Up, Light Blast, Graveyard Shift and Stitches Finnish VHS tapes.
Rolling Vengeance and Certain Fury were released here back in the day but those tapes are pretty rare.

i purchased a couple of uk quad posters this year,i got bachelor party uk quad poster of ebay for 13 uk pounds,the exact same as the one below but i would say in much better condition
and making the grade uk quad poster the same as the one below for just 10 uk pounds of ebay in near mint condition
i also purchased a quad movie frame and i'm hoping to get either one or both put up on my bedroom wall that's if i can talk my wife around.
the other poster i got was a really cool jack's back uk video poster featuring james spader and cynthia gibb and featuring some really wicked artwork for only 6 pound of ebay also in near mint condition.

I know they said roger Moore seemed to be a bit past it at that time to be playing bond.

I just checked out your review for the wizard sean,great review,I've never actually seen the movie but I kept thinking i remember Christian Slater being in it then I thought no I must be imagining it,but I see he does appear,never realised beau bridges was in it as well.
Never seen this or his other popular hit movie little monsters,I think the only thing I've seen Fred savage in is the movie vice versa and the series the wonder years.

The posters and video-sleeves for a whole bunch of 80's teen sex comedies certainly knew how to draw the attention of its target-audience. For example :

i've got running hot on dvd as well,it was a blind buy,the out of print vhs was selling at ridiculous prices and when i saw code red were issuing it on dvd i snapped it up straight away,really great little known 80s flick.
i think it's been re issued since by scorpion dvd paired up with the thriller hot target(one i've never seen).
on the old code red dvd they say there is a spelling error on the front cover with eric stoltz's name,i've not ever checked my copy but i'll have to have a look at some time.

just waiting for it to arrive from the us,keeping my fingers crossed it's in as good a condition as it looked on ebay.
i don't own many posters,about 5 or 6 in total,making the grade is the one in the best condition,it looks top notch where as the us one sheet of mutant 1984 i purchased turned up disappointingly a lot more creased than the pics and seller had detailed it on ebay.
all the original 80s uk quad posters and i believe us one sheet posters as well were nearly always supplied to the theatres in a folded condition, hence the crease lines where as later posters (90s onwards) tended to be rolled.

Back in the 80s the rating system was like this: S = General Audiences, after that basically every even number up to 18 and then KK = banned.
They have changed the system twice since. The first time was in 2001 which was the year of relief to finnish movie lovers, the old stupid video law was finally over and they didnīt cut movies anymore. The ratings were 3,7,11,13,15 and 18.
In 2012 they changed the system again and now itīs like this:
S = General Audiance and after that comes 7,12,16,18. You can see movies with 7,12,16 marking with an adult even if youīre three years younger.

i can see your point thenodfather but i think it might of been the case of denis leary perhaps being a higher profile name back in 93 in the us than what stephen dorff was!

DO, I really recommend it. Rick Moranis and Dave Tomas are brilliant in it and make a great duo. Like the titles suggests it is a strange brew. I like to watch it with a few beers
I think that they never released Making Contact here. Itīs interesting stuff though, Roland Emmerichīs first international movie.
Strange Brew is another tricky one iīve never seen. Maybe iīll order the R1 dvd someday.

Drew Struzan did a lot of thpse really nice Star Wars, Indiana Jones, New Blade Runner and The Back to the Future Series. One of the most prolific movie poster artist. He continued on to do many 90's and late on. One of the last ones I remember was Hellboy.

One of the weirdest 80's movies I have seen. I saw it recently mostly because the cover looked so damn good. I usually don't do that since a cover is not always the best judge of a good movie. Some of the worst movies sport the best covers. The cinematography was good, but the story was a complete mess. Hardly anything memorable except for the switchblade plastic bird scene near the end. Also the bonus interviews were pretty good. All, but the last one.

Picked this up the other day pretty cheap of ebay a 1983 UK quad poster for - street fleet which is known originally as DC cab in the us.
Also about 3 or 4 weeks back from the same seller picked up really good condition original UK cinema quads for - the young warriors and - the party animal also rather cheap - under 5 UK pounds each which I think for the age and condition of the posters for a fan of the movies in question is a bit of a bargain.

I picked up another really cheap quad poster the other day of ebay,no mercy from 1986 starring Richard gere and Kim basinger,always liked this movie.
Really pleased with the quality of the poster as well,it's sometimes pot luck with the condition considering how old they are but so far I've been really lucky and all but one (10 to midnight) poster has been in more or less near perfect condition.

did bid on a original uk quad for the christain slater film - kuffs but got outbid on it and also - poltergeist 2 and the horror comedy house but lost out on them also.

Aaah, 52 Pick-Up, such a classic Cannon feature. I like the way warrior collects. Those quad poster are smaller but the same informationīs there. Weīve never had any quad posters here but there seems to be lots of 80s movie posters available at the moment. Too bad i donīt have a mancave.

Basically Logan if it's a poster to a movie I like I'll go for it,main factor being always the price,it's got to be at the right price,the cheaper the better!
I love 52 pick up,a definite cannon 80s sleazefest with the great roy scheider,this - blue thunder,Cohen and Tate,jaws etc. - awesome actor!
Another thing is the posters store easy,normally always posted folded between two sheets of card so I keep them on top off one of my deep bookcases,the only poster I've got that is in a postage tube is unlawful entry which came rolled as it's a newer poster - 1992.
All quad posters from the 80s were normally sent out to the cinemas folded where as come the 90s this pratice was changed to them being rolled.

Love the original but I do actually watch parts 2 and 3 the most,there such great fun.
Never seen the 1987 TV movie - bates motel before or the 2012 TV series that seems to be doing quite well for itself and I believe is now in its 4 or 5 season.
I think the Vince Vaughn remake was a bad idea as it was never really likely to work,for me there's only one Norman bates and that's Anthony Perkins!

This is the artwork for there (waner's) new 25th anniversary edition steelbook which compared to the original Christmas vacation art is also pretty lame!
Has a remastered transfer this time around with a new HD audio track and a supposed much improved picture.
Here in the UK it was released at the theatres with the alternate title of national lampoon's winter holiday but was then released to home video thankfully under the preferable Christmas vacation title!

Until a while back I never knew that - airplane went under the title of - flying high in Australia,I can remember both those titles - the pink Chiquita's and sno-line but have not see either of them though!

Night Warriors (1983) directed by Paul Donovan
A year before i started renting movies myself i watched a bunch at my cousin's house who was two years older than i am. Night Warriors is one of the earliest memories i have of watching rental tapes. This must have been around 1985 i think. (keep in mind i was still only 8 or 9 years old, and we only had two public network TV channels in those days.. cable TV was still a couple of years away, so there was no way you could ever see something like Night Warriors on TV) For years i didn't know which movie this was, but later i found out this was actually released under several alternate titles, such as Self-Defense and Siege. But i will always remember it as Night Warriors ! I have not been able to watch Night Warriors ever since, so this must be at least thirty years ago, but i remember it as an ultra gritty urban action thriller, not unlike Death Wish 2 or Vigilante, both of which were released roughly around the same time.

I've got the - siege on vhs and its an absolutely awesome action thriller,quite gritty and violent,this is one that certainly needs a DVD or blu ray release.
Not watched it for a year or 2 but I do remember the big guy from stegman's gang in - class of 1984 is in it!
Have you guys ever seen the 1983 Canadian thriller - cross country as that's another pretty cool flick!

It is getting confusing though, all those alternate titles..
Airplane was released here as Flying High.. Vigilante was called Streetfighters.. Sno-Line has been released on UK home video as Deathline while the Imdb has it listed as Texas Godfather.. and Night Warriors is apparently better known as Siege or Self-Defense..

It's almost like that particular design was created by someone who didn't see the actual movie.. but did it solely based on reading a synopsis or something.
I'm not familiar with Cross Country, no.. but there sure are some names on that poster that do ring a bell. Richard Beymer played Benjamin Horne (the hotel owner) in Twin Peaks, and Nina Axelrod was the girl from Motel Hell.

Yes the first time I heard about this film was on Premiere where it was called Best Shot years later I spent time trying to find it to buy but could not find it under that name only the name of Hoosiers I found the film very good indeed one of my all time favourite s. It's nice to see the poster for the movie though.

I'm a James Belushi fan. I actually love and have recorded (on VHS tape*) "The Principal".
Formulaic, but who cares!?!

Yeah mine are straight Into plasterboard using self drill plasterboard fixings,the snap frames I use Logan are lighter than you expect!

So you didn't have to find the wooden joist or anything - you just put a fixing for plasterboard? (are those the ones that you use like a 'gun' thing for attaching?)
I had some snap frames a couple of years ago, but I found the stuff that went in front of the poster kind of opaque and dullish. I ended up getting some frames from the US (cost a fair bit, and then about two months later I got the FedEx import duty charge - ouch!)

It feels really sturdy and I believe it won't go anywhere.
My snap frames I got from Sign Holders Uk I think look great where as the snap frame I have for my Jack's Back movie poster came with a really dull and rather crappy looking protective sheeting!

I looked at those when I was getting snap-frames years ago, but I think I went somewhere else for them. The ones I got had a dull almost cloudy sheet of plastic that went over the pictures and I was never happy with them.
I was thinking of hanging mine via a wire they have on the back - like a normal picture. But if I remember correctly those snap frames come with screw holes in the corners that you use to attach them to the wall. Am I right? That would make them more stable and distribute the weight a little more than with something like a hook. Hmm... still not sure if the plasterboard could take the weight if it was just hanging on a hook...

Yeah Logan a snap frame would certainly distribute the weight better than a single hook as they have 6 or more screw holes with the screw holes being in either corner and in the centre's plus they come with the proper screws and fixings.
Some people just pin them to the wall but then you've got to take into account that your putting pinholes in your cherished poster it all depends on what your happy with.

No pins for mine! Not on a vintage poster! I have frames with a wire at the back. Really not sure about the weight distribution. I think the snap frame with fixtures along each edge is a good idea. Hmm... I still need to do some thinking!

Love The Principal Rock Vixen as do most People I know that have checked it out,Belushi and Gossett Jr are both great and it's one of those films that I think takes many people by surprise as to how entertaining it actually is!
Love the Police Academy 4 artwork,i think part 2 and 4 were my equal favourite's from the sequels and we're the only two that I watched in the theatres.
Part 3 was OK but I was not over keen on 5 and Part 6 I don't think I remember being that great either,never seen Mission To Moscow but by all accounts I'm probably doing myself a big favour!
