i think i've only seen thorn birds, which i love. but people on here have talked about "V"..which i have never seen. my aunt recommended lonesome dove and it's pretty cheap on amazon. i've been shopping for movies on amazon a lot.

Shogun... no doubt! And it's not hard to follow.... if you're paying attention! And It doesn't need subtitles since almost everything that Blackthorne is told in japanese is translated for him. So you learn some japanese alongside the main character! That's the brilliance of the show!

My vote goes for a couple of period series' based on books: 'Brideshead Revisited' and 'Anne of Green Gables'.

I remember that Das Boot was aired first time here as a three-part mini-series.
Finnish TV2 broadcasted it here in 1985 and i watched it and loved it.

Don't worry about it. It's just hard to quote someone who already used the quote feature. It tends to get messy that way.
Yep, Shogun was probably my favourite mini series at the time. But I doubt that people who aren't the least interested in (old) Japanese culture/customs can really appreciate it. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, you should at least be marginally interested in other cultures to appreciate it.
It's not as action packed as some might think. But the tension in the drama is palpable. And all the stuff you learn, you would have to read like five books to get the same info!
I always sort of liked his 'house girl' Fujiko
It is a great show, with many layers. I have watched the dvd box, all eps. three times since I bought it. And I discover new things every time.

I saw a teaser today for LMN channel- they are having mini-series mania starting next week, Nov. 23. http://www.lmn.tv/ It is the 25th anniversary of the Thorn Birds. I don't get this channel though, cuz I only have basic cable, not the expanded version.

I have owned V the mini series and the Final Battle for a few years now and still think they are great to watch,but you do have to except it can look dated against newer series. Have just purchased V the series on dvd and am upto episode 4,i loved watching it as a youngster and it's still great if a little cheesey in places.My only complaint is the sound can be a bit poor in places but the picture quality has transfered well. Shame it got cancelled after one series and ended on a cliff hanger that was never resolved(unless you read the books).Also it was rumored to be the most expensive series made at the time costing 1 million dollars per episode.

First it was a 3-part mini-series (1983) then a 22 episode weekly series (1986).
I watched it in the 80s when the finnish MTV (not THAT MTV) showed it here.
I remember that it was a great show with nice twists. Made in Australia so itīs kind of exotic.
Was The Gambler considered a Mini-series? If so that was a good one.

Just took a quick look at this thread's pages, and i was surprised nobody mentioned Salem's Lot. Technically it came out late in '79, but i think most of us saw it either on tv or on video somewhere in the '80s. Originally a two-part miniseries with a running-time of over three hours, but later re-edited to a less than 2 hour version for its release on videocassette. I believe both versions are available on dvd nowadays. The original series still holds up very well today. Good, scary stuff !

Watched Master of the Game (1984) while the site was down. Itīs a three-part miniseries based on Sidney Sheldon novel.
"Elderly Kate Blackwell looks back at her family's life beginning with her Scottish father Jamie McGregor's journey to South Africa to make his fortune in diamonds. The family history is littered with revenge, lust, betrayal, manipulation, and murder." (IMDb)
The first part is set in 1883. Jamie McGregor (Ian Charleson) travels to South-Africa and meets the devilish Salomon Van Der Merwe (Donald Pleasence). I like this part the most. Good adventure feel and itīs always nice to see Pleasence.
McGregorīs daughter Katherine (Dyan Cannon) and her son Anthony (Harry Hamlin) are the main characters in the second part. Times moves fast and it feels like every other minute someone dies. Anthony goes to Paris to study art and meets Dominique played by lovely Maryam dīAbo. In the beginning of this ep Cannon plays a teen at 46 which was pretty hard to swallow
The third part is pure soap opera. Anthony has two daughters (Liane Langland in dual role), one wild and one decent. The wild one makes bad things and Katherine takes her out of her will and the rest of the ep she tries to scheme back in.
I would recommed this miniseries only for true 80īs fanatics.

Watched The Gambler (1980) and sequel Kenny Rogers as The Gambler: The Adventure continues (1983) earlier this week.
"Brady Hawkes, The Gambler, receives a letter from his son indicating he needs help. This sends Brady to the rescue. Along the way Brady meets up with Billy Montana, a young man who thinks he knows everything about playing cards. Brady teaches Billy a few lessons along the way and they end up forming a strong friendship and team up together." (IMDb)
The original 90 mins tv-movie was pretty decent stuff. Rogers is cool and always has the last word and it was nice to see beautiful Lee Purcell. Few poker games, gunfights and easygoing feel.
The sequel was a three hour miniseries originally aired in two parts. It starts basically right where the original ended. Hawkes and his son are going to San Francisco with Billy Montana (Bruce Boxleitner again). Evil McCourt (Mitchell Ryan) and his merry men try to rob the train but fail so they take Hawkesī son instead and the chase begins.
This was pretty entertaining tv-stuff with co-stars like Linda Evans and Brion James. Nice adventure feel and lots of wheelin and dealin but somehow Rogers forgot that he limped in the first film. Now heīs running like a young stallion Three more tv-films were made but i donīt have those.

Watched Brideshead Revisited (1981).
11 hours of rather dry british drama but i loved it. It was like a drug and i needed my daily dose. Wonderful cast playing wonderful characters on wonderful locations. Just finished the last episode and i already miss it.

Anne Of Green Gables is one of my wife's favorites...I've seen bits of each show, but not the entire series (she has them on DVD, so may watch with her someday). We are only a 1.5 hour ferry ride to Prince Edward Island where the series is based...we visit at least 2-3 times a year (my brother lives there).
