Ok, I've waited long enough, I've got to find out how much love is out there for my favourite ever 80's flick, the brilliant BTILC...
Jack Burton is still the best and funniest hero in movie history. I grew up with this movie and still can't get enough. It is so awesome. I'd love to hear wht you guys think of it!!!

"You know what ole Jack Burton always says at a time like this?"

Who?

"Big Trouble in Little China" is a quirky 80's classic. My fav 80's Kurt Russell character will always be Snake Plissken, but ole Jack Burton might just be able to give him a lightening bolt or two on occasion.

Yeah he does!!! 'What do ya say when someone's got your favourite head pressed up against the wall, and asks have ya paid your dues? Well yes sir, the check's in the mail'!!!

Just remember what ole Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ole storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

I hate to say this..Jack, since it's your fav, I have never seen it. I must have missed out.

One of these days...I am going on a Rewind Tour around the World.

Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :

I think I am going to start in Cincinnati and head west.

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

Well when you hit Ireland you come down to Chinatown and you give ol' Jack Burton a call. We'll shake the pillars of heaven baby!!

Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :

Whoa! I think I better go rent that movie, to see what kind of "Trouble" I am in for.

Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :

From the sounds of it...it is Big Big Big trouble in Ireland.

Was there a sequel?

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

Alas no, but I still hold out hope for one. Never happen, although they may do a remake which would be awful. There is no improving on this movie. And yeah, have a look at it, if you like what you see, you gimme a holler honey!! [Wink]

Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :

All right...I just started a new list of "must see" movies, and it is at the top. I am interested in it, because of all the Love being displayed here for it. Plus...it's not like I find it hard to look at Kurt Russell for any length of time.

Jack...welcome to the Rewind....I am not 100% sure, but you might be the first lad from Ireland that posted much on here. [Wink]

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

Awwww, that's sweet. Thank you so much. I'll try to represent Ireland with honor, dignity and... ah feck it, people expect us Irish to be a bit mad so why not!!!!!

And enjoy the movie ya lucky gal!!!

Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :

Hmmm...I never thought that about the Irish, I always think happy thoughts...like 4 leaf clovers, Shamrock Shakes, and Irish Spring soap.
All good stuff.

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

Ha ha ha.... Oh dear. The real Ireland is a long long long way from Lucky Charms my dear!!!

Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :

Well...I just bought your movie off Ebay...I'll report back soon what my findings are.

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

You little darlin you..... My tip, cosy up with Popcorn, turn the lights down low, and let Jack Burton take you to heaven and back.... Oh and watch out for a young Kim Catrell!!!!

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

It's good, mindless fun. The ending was kind of lame though. The whole Jack/Kim Catrall thing turned into a joke.

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

Ya, I see what you mean alright, but let's not spoil it for ISIS!!! Sssshhhhhhhhhh...... [Wink]

Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :

I will do that. I am excited to have a new movie to look forward to watching.

I have been making a new list tonight....I also just bought Fandango-I had never heard of it either.

It is really cool when you find movies that you didn't know were out there.

I love that I haven't seen every movie of the 80's, and that there are so many still left out there to discover. That is what is amazing to me about the 80's, is how much stuff happened in 10 years.

I didn't even know Kim Catrall was in it.

It's like the other night when I saw Christine on TV , Kelly Preston was in that movie...she looked like she had just walked off the set of Mischief and walked in to Christine by accident, it was so weird to see her.

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

I know exactly what you mean!! I too have dozens of 80's movies I've yet to see, and working my way through them is so much fun!! Although this movie is my favourite, I'm so nervous now, what if you don't like it??

Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :

Then your in Big Trouble! [Wink] [Razz]

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Isis, this an easily available movie, you can get it in the supermarket. But I think there is a special edition. Mr. Burton, I assume you own this? What is the breakdown of the special features available? Is it two discs.

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

Yep.. It's packed with deleted scenes, and the options menu is the coolest thing I've ever seen!!

Check out Play.com for the version I have!!

A real 80s gem -- one of John Carpenters best. It also had a great soundtrack, composed by John Carpenter & Alan Howarth.

Jack Burton: Okay. You people sit tight, hold the fort and keep the home fires burning. And if we're not back by dawn... call the president.

[Big Grin]

What is it rated?

My favourite 80's movie, neck to neck with THE BURBS! And most def Carpenters best movie in my opinion.

I watch it like every 3 months or so.... INDEEEEEED!!

I think it's a PG - certainly there's nothing particularly bad there that kids shouldn't watch. There's no real language in the movie, and I can't recall any explicit violence - the fight scenes are all pretty tame when compared to how they could have been.

Mr. Burton, you've proclaimed mad love for this film since the start but IYO is this your favorite Kurt Russell movie? Or do you like him in Escape from NY/LA or other ones better? I like him maybe in Miracle the best, but maybe that's the hockey fanatic in me.

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

I am a huge fan of Mr Kurt Russell. Last count I had 12 of his movies on DVD.
No doubt this is my favourite of his,as Jack Burton is just the most original and brilliant character of all time, but if I listed my favourites it would go like this:

1: BTILC
2: Escape From New York
3: The Thing
4: Tango and Cash
5: Backdraft
6: Used Cars
7: Death Proof
8: 3000 Miles To Graceland

Hmmmmm I gotta try that!!

INDEED!!

Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :

That was one weird movie. I have no clue what that was all about. I think whoever was working on it was on some of their own magic mushrooms.

There were places that my son and I thought did we miss something....but we hadn't...but I couldn't begin to explain that movie if I had to.

My son was calling it "Teenage Mutant Asians". I thought it was like a cross between Shogun and Ghostbusters. I thought ...what is up with the chinese dudes with the lamp shades on their heads, was there a clearance sale at Pier 1 Imports? The Chinese guy with the major Lee Press On nails...he has been in other 80s movies.

It had some funny moments...followed by complete and totally confusion.

I thought the special effects were great...I wanted that big Hairy Monster thing for my Halloween party...there was some great costume ideas in that movie for Halloween. I kept thinking I wonder what John Carpenter's house is really like at "Halloween".

Kurt Russell is never hard to look at in a movie.

I didn't know having green eyes was such a hot commodity. Someone told me in the 80s that I looked like Kim Cattrall...it must have been the green eyes and her hairdo.

My son said his friend told him that he loved that movie...my son said...he's got alot of explaining to do.

All I can say is...."the check's in the mail"- [Wink] and I'm going to ride the Pork Chop Express.

That was total Randomness.

Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :

Oh...but if I had to say if I actually liked it or not....I did....it was just so weird....it was non stop....and so much happening....and alot to look at...but hard to get it....but my son did say...he thought that is the whole point of the movie. He liked it too.

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

Intresting, very intresting.. I think you need to watch it a dozen or so times to fully appreciate it, but hey!! You got time!! [Wink]

The three storms were so cool. Rayden is cool too but I love the originals. Especially Thunder. See him blow up at the end?? Classic!!

They looked like they had hampers made of shredded wheat on their heads.

I have never done drugs in my life...so I don't know what getting high is like, and don't care...but if I had to guess...after hearing about the mushroom thing...I would think that the way they acted on the one elevator scene was them being high...and it just had some kind of weird feel to it...that was so "out there"...like on another dimension or something...

My son thinks he'll need to watch it again, just to try and figure it out completely.

I thought some of the effects were so amazing...that's the kind of stuff about the 80s movies that made them so great. You don't see that in today's stuff.

I can really see where guys would like it alot.

The fight scenes were kind of gross at times, when they broke the one guys arm in half.

That monster that was a big floating head, with an eyeball in it's mouth...it reminded me of Slimer from Ghostbusters.

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

But what did you think of Kurt Russell?? He made the movie with his clueless but brave Jack Burton. My favourite ever character..

When he's busting the women out of the prison and Margo says to him 'What are you gonna do Jack'?

His heroic response?? : 'I have no idea'!! [Big Grin] [Big Grin]
BRILLIANT!!

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail."

Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

I definately like Kurt Russell...he was definately living in his own world as Jack Burton. He was a "fly by the seat of his pants" kind of guy.

My son watched it again today. He said they should make a video game out of it. He thought it could be really fun to play with. We were pretty much in awe of the effects.

The underwater scenes when they were swimming through the tunnels...I was thinking that when Kurt Russell did Poseidon, that he already had previous experience doing some of that stuff, and he probably thought that was all a little deja vu-ish.

Posted by Mr. Jack Burton (Member # 4673) on :

I liked Poseidon.. Did anyone else like it?? I dunno..

Anyways, your son is going to grow up lovin that movie and be just like me!! You just wait and see!!

That's always how it starts, very small...

'Okay. You people sit tight, hold the fort and keep the home fires burning. And if we're not back by dawn... call the president.'

I hope you guys don't mind, but every now and then I'm gonna post lines from Jack Burton on here. I just feel the guy said so much in one movie, I've go to share it with the World!! [Wink]

Oh my...... [Eek!] [Eek!] [Eek!]

I was busy this afternoon trying to put my house back together after my contractors got done redoing my livingroom, but I saw pieces of it, and at the end...I walked in the room, and said

"aren't you going to kiss her good-bye?"

and then said "NOPE".

So...I already know some of the words....and I only saw it once....

I think this movie could be hypnotic....if you stare in to the bright lights to much...you might find yourself at Pier 1 Imports with a hamper on your head.

How about this:

Big Trouble In Little China 2
Jack Takes New York !!!!

So here's the story, Jack Burton's been down on his luck of late. He's been drifting in and out of the trucking game for the last 25 years and has seen every corner of America, some corners more than others..
Now, in his fifties, still alone with just his CB for company he's looking for one last adventure. One big score, one more big job.

He agress to take a rig filled with something he must get to New York in 1 week or face non payment and death!! What's in the rig?? He's not told, but he will be payed the sum of $1million for successful delivery in Manhatten.
So he sets out with old pal Wang from the Waterfront in San Francisco, with instructions from his employer.... A reincarnation of David Lo Pan!! In the truck is an ancient Chinese evil that will be unleashed in New Yorks Chinatown if released within the next full moon!!!

So you've got the two old friends, a cross country road movie for the first half, with all sorts of Chinese bad guys trying to catch up and stop them, then second half based in New York Chinatown... It could be great!!

So Mr John Carpenter, Mr Kurt Russell, if you guys read this, DO IT!!!!! [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

Good sequel premise, almost on a par with my 'Top Gun 2' idea. JC expressed in an interest in making it, I think he couldn't get stuido backing for some reason; you'd think that after 'Death Proof' Kurt could get 'Dimension' to put in some cash.

Anyone here ever watch the show "Chuck"? It's on every Monday night here in the US on NBC. The reason I ask is because they just did an episode last night where Sarah's father shows up. His name is.... You guessed it, Mr Jack Burton! It was played by Gary Cole, who was also "Bill Lumbergh" (the office manager) in Office Space (1999). Coincidence? I think not! John Larroquette was on the show about 3 weeks ago.

Office Space: Bill Lumbergh

I really enjoy the show "Chuck", it is kind if like "Get Smart" updated for the current world. They are always doing flashbacks and the 80's references are constant. Not only was a character Mr. Jack Burton, but the episode also intertwined the "Back To the Future" DeLorean as well. Or 'DEMORGAN' for anyone that watches the show.

Posted by jdocster (Member # 5752) on :

Yeah,

I forgot to mention the DeLorean. Then, he got a 68 Charger (Dukes of Hazzard edition)... They seem to have 80s people on this show periodically. Then, you did know Adam Baldwin is on the show...

Adam Baldwin 80s movies:

Cohen and Tate (1989)
The Chocolate War (1988)
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
3:15 (1986)
Bad Guys (1986)
Reckless (1984)
Hadley's Rebellion (1984)
D.C. Cab (1983)
Ordinary People (1980)
My Bodyguard (1980)

Riptide, and anyone else...

Did you know most of your favorite shows can be seen on this website "hulu.com"?

Here is the last episode of Chuck in it's entirety:

My favourite of the three storms is no doubt, Thunder! Been a fan of Carter Wong before I saw this movie. Always been a kung fu/Hong Kong movie nut, since I was a little kid.

Here's Carter sparring with Chuck Norris in 1972. Carter was doing Hapkido, with Angela Mao and Sammo Hung. And Chuck was shooting Way of the dragon with Bruce Lee, of course.

 -

Here is Carter practicing with Bruce Lee, and Bob Wall looking in.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Carter Wong goes way back, going to have to look for more of his films.

Posted by JAY LEE (Member # 6345) on :

Here are my favourites of his...

HAPKIDO 1972
WHEN TAEKWONDO STRIKES 1973
BORN INVINCIBLE 1978

But nothing compares to the awesome craziness of the 18 BRONZEMEN and RETURN OF THE 18 BRONZEMEN!

These are Carter's signature films. And damn they are hilarious and enjoyable.

Carter has to train and fight his way through the underground tunnels of the Shaolin temple, which is filled with death traps and of course, the titular Shaolin bronzemen. (which is sometimes guys in golden robot suits, of various quality,
and sometimes just guys painted gold, I guess they ran out of money for costumes:)

Excellent scene amigo.
Great to hear love for this movie. Anyone else got a favourite scene??

I love it all, but my top 3 scenes are,
3: The cutting of the bottle..(double or nothin Jack.. Your out of your mind Wang but God bless ya)
2: Jack rippin the crap out of Lopan after he reveals who he really is..(you can rule the universe from beyond the grave, INDEED!, or check into a psycho ward, whatever comes first uh)
1: From the porkchop express(When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail." )

Posted by JAY LEE (Member # 6345) on :

The way James Hong says "INDEEEEED" is about the funniest thing I have ever seen, in any movie ever made!!

Or Russel's dry delivery when he says "Are you crazy, is that your problem?" awesome!! he says it with compassion, even though he obviously doesn't care for Lo Pan, so it comes off as slightly condesending. Russel is the man in this movie.

But pretty much the whole damn film. It is so brilliant, I can never get tired of it!
