This is the documentary behind why 'The Galleria' that stood in all its 80's glory had to be demolished. I don't know who came up with the horrible idea that they should unleash security 'killbots' on nightly intruders, but since The Galleria was the overnight haunting ground for such 80's movies as "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", "Breakin' All the Rules", and finally the retitled after what happened "Chopping Mall".....that might not have been such a good idea.

I know this is a Cindy Mancini fav.....so maybe she has the answer.

So the Saturday night movie is:

Chopping Mall (1986)

 -

A group of four couples plan a party at the local furniture store where three of the guys work. They just happen to plan it on the first night the new security system comes into play. The security system includes three protector robots and large steel doors that lock at midnight and don't open again until sunrise. Unfortunately, the rooftop computer that controls the robots is struck by lightning and they turn into out of control killbots attacking everyone in sight with their armament. The teens soon realize that the only way to survive is to try to figure out a way to destroy these robots.

 -

Hey.. when did Samantha Belmont show up?

 -

For fan of the 80's and The Galleria, this is a Halloween must!

This is a real 80s classic. You just don't see movies like this anymore... Another good Kellie Maroney flick! She has a new flick coming out called Nightmare Carnival. It's in pre-production:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910569/

Apparently she was just in an episode of True Blood on HBO!

"Buy or Die!" You don't get better than THAT! LOL!!!!

Yes!! Valley you totally rock! You are right, I love love love this movie!!!! It really is because of that whole Galleria thing. Being able to shop and walk around there in the early 80's would have been heaven on a stick for me!!

This movie is chock full of 80's actor/actresses we enjoy like Kelli, Barbara Crampton (Frat Vac) and the guy who played CJ in The Allnighter!

I am going to watch this tonight, in the dark, on my couch with my Halloween lights and decorations all around me and it will be PURE BLISS!!!!

P.S. Love the newspaper ad you found!! Where the heck did you score that?!?!?!?!

NowhereGirl - did you get any feedback from your friend?

CT - I must admit that the infamous exploding head is an 80's cult classic moment.

Helen - I would say thanks for posting it, but watching it over and over is starting to freak me out. Ha

Cindy - I meant to get back to you before you watched it last night. Since we both appreciate The Galleria, I thought it might be fun to see how many Galleria store names we could come up with by watching the movie closely.

Chopping Mall is glorious fun. I only wish they would get a decent DVD of it out - the current transfer is terrible.

Watched Chopping Mall last night.
I loved it! Awesome entertainment.

Great 80s feel throughout the movie.
Nice Wynorski and Corman movie posters on the pizzeria walls.

The lovely Barbara Crampton (From Beyond, Re-Animator, Fraternity Vacation)
The cute Kelli Maroney (Night of the Comet, The Zero Boys)

The vicious Killbots with too much firepower.

And you gotta love the good old Mr D. Miller (Gremlins, The Terminator, Night of the Creeps etc.)
Once again in a fine supporting role, although a very short one this time.

I also loved the cheap synth score by Chuck Cirino. It was magical!

You canīt get much better late nite summer movie than this!

Another film that I have watched on YouTube. I remember the infamous exploding head scene very well. "Thank you. Have a nice day."

Vicious Killbots can never have too much firepower... [Smile]

I wonder why we never saw them at the mall?

Tony O'Dell and Karrie Emerson were in one other 80s horror film together before Chopping Mall: Evils of the Night (1985).

Director Jim Wynorski has co-starred in a few films with two of the actors whom he directed in "Chopping Mall," Kelli Maroney as well as John Terlesky. I thought that I would post these here:

Kelli Maroney:

Hard To Die (1990)
Kelli Maroney -- Porno Wife (as D. Mason Keener)
Jim Wynorski -- Porno Director (uncredited)

Scream Queen Hot Tub Party (1991)
Kelli Maroney -- Herself
Jim Wynorski -- Monster in Basement (uncredited)

John Terlesky:

Deathstalker (1987)
John Terlesky -- Deathstalker
Jim Wynorski -- Dying Soldier (as Arch Stanton)

Little Miss Millions (1993)
John Terlesky -- Randolph Palmer (uncredited)
Jim Wynorski -- Man at Denver Bus Ticket Counter and Radio Voice (uncredited)

Vampirella (1996)
John Terlesky -- Astronaunt #2 (Stubble)
Jim Wynorski -- TV News Anchor (uncredited)

Storm Trooper (1998)
John Terlesky -- Shotgun
Jim Wynorski -- Tannis Coporation Scientist (uncredited).

Kelli Maroney also plays Nurse Oxford in the
1988 Wynorski "classic" Not of this Earth starring Traci Lords.
Very funny flick, if you like Wynorski check it out!

I would like to add that there is another film that Jim Wynorski makes an appearence in with one of his "Chopping Mall" cast. "Demolition High" (1996) features Gerrit Graham as Mr. Vogel while Jim, who directs as well, turns up uncredited as a police sniper.

"Demolition High" (1996)
Love this movie !
should have made at least $50 million

Chopping Mall ... when the lady burns up I always get sad and turn it off, because of the emotion of her boyfriend. He really sells it.

Just watched this tonight and loved it. Great to see The Galleria that we all love from "Fast Times" and lots of familiar faces from other 80's movies...Loved the references to "My Chauffeur" and the posters of other 80's movies like "Slumber Party Massacre" and "The Lost Empire" in the background. The exploding head is too awesome for words!

I mentioned John Terlesky in the "Allnighter" thread. For anyone that hasn't taken a chance on "Chopping Mall" ..

don't you think it is about time for some after hours fun at The Sherman Oaks Galleria??

How do you guys watch these horror movies? Am I the only one who gets scared?

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Secret Admirer.. I seldom get truly scared while watching horror movies. They will sometimes make me jump or the gore might make me cringe a little, but watching a good horror flick is like riding a rollercoaster at an amusement park in my opinion.

And movies like "Chopping Mall" are more fun than scary really. Then you have real horror fans like There'll be no morning for us and pettyfan that probably press repeat on the DVD player when stuff like an "exploding head" occurs. Ha

Posted by There'll be no morning for us (Member # 5804) on :

LOL, cheeky [Big Grin] Well, maybe now and then hehe [Wink]

I've never really been properly scared by them since I was a kid. But many of the older horrors, especially 60's and 70's have such great atmosphere and can give me a lovely creepy feeling still [Cool]

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Kelli.. here's a "Chopping Mall" thread from a few years ago.

Do you remember this scene in "Chopping Mall":

Where Suzie says to Alison..."Hey, would I set you up with a slimedog or something? No way babe!".....and they both say..."It is babe, isn't it."

Was that really a "My Chauffeur" reference?

Thread is up to two pages of comments, so you have to hit page 1 to read it all.

I watched this for the first time.....it was funny and cool being that I loved all the actors and the cheesy effects and great music.....I liked it but I don't see loving it so much i'd need to own it. Kelly and Tony steal the movie of course.....! Glad I saw it though......did make me reminisce about the old mall I used to go to in the 80's [Smile]

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Muffy.. I totally understand your thoughts on "Chopping Mall" as a decent movie, but not one that you would buy to watch again.. I think Simoneer mentioned that it never reached the 'so bad it was good' level and just saw it as bad. While others like Tiffany and Cindy Mancini see it as awesome 80's horror fun.

When I watch "Chopping Mall" .. I can actually see all of those reviews as possibilities. This movie is best watch at 3am with a cold frosty brew in your hand.

Rootbeer and Exploding Heads make for a wicked late night combination.

I think for me this movie signifies classic 80's horror. I love the tongue in cheek humor mixed with over the top killing scenes. If you go into this movie expecting a serious horror flick with a detailed plot then you will probably be disappointed but thats not really how I see 80's horror.

Hey everyone! Let's give "Chopping Mall" some appreciation.

I'm trying to hold out until October to watch it again, but I just don't know. Definitely, on our list. [Cool]
