Well October is almost here and I know that several of us start watching scary/horror movies beginning on October 1st with a movie party that culminates on Halloween night. This year is quite special in my opinion because October 31st falls on a Friday!
So let's all use this thread to share the movies we watch as we 'creep' toward another All Hallows Eve. It might remind everyone of some hidden gems that others might be watching.
Oh and if you started early.....let the movies begin.

To begin my descent, I plan on watching Cheerleader Camp (1987) on the night of October 1st. Great cast with Betsy Russell, Lucinda Dlckey, and Lorie Griffin with some of the best b-movie make-up special effects ever.

i watched friday the 13th parts one through three. i also am watching seasons 1 & 2 of the show Supernatural...just saw an episode called bloody mary. i plan on watching the freddy movies... i purposely haven't watched those in a long time so that i can watch parts 1 though 4. and i ALWAYS watch the halloweens - parts 2, 3, 4 & 5 are my faves for this time of year.
valley, i have cheerleader camp and have only watched it once since i bought it. but i'm gonna pull it out of the bin and watch it again.
petty i think you would appreciate cheerleader camp. it's campy but totally 80s.

I personally love to watch Halloween (orginal) and a few of the Friday the 13th movies 3-5.
I think I will add a few more to the list this year. I don't know why but fall just seems to be a perfect time to curl up with some sweats on and get in to a great horror flick.

You know I love Halloween....it is my favorite holiday...I love it even more than Christmas...I really don't think it fits my personality at all either...but I love watching older scary movies. I will watch one every night in October. I am saving ...

For right around the night of my party ...I have never seen any of them.
I always watch Halloween 1 and 2 on Halloween night.
I just saw Friday the 13th part 2 on regular TV just a few nights ago.
I have Cheerleader Camp on DVD, but haven't watched it yet...I'll have to...I had bought it on a VHS tape a few years ago...and got to the end and the tape was all messed up...so I never saw the end. So, I will watch it October 1st too...then I can comment on it more.

We have a store here Fred Meyer and I wondered the Halloween section and found these dvd triple sets.......and bought The "dying to be popular" set it has Carrie, Hello Mary Lou Prom night 2 ( I liked it better then the original) and Swim Fan but there are a lot of them with a mix of 80's horror movies.......you can find some of them at Amazon under "triple feature dvd set" I only paid $14.99.

I think "The Stepfather" is a great movie for this time of year...not only is it scary...but it does have beautiful fall weather in it.

I have about 75 horror movies, so I also try to start on October 1st and save my favorites for Halloween night. Must sees for me are Halloween 1-6, a couple Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elmstreet. Also Monster Squad, Fright Night, and embarressed to say...Hocus Pocus! I also really love Fat Albert's Halloween Special....and many many more. I have a two year old son, so me and my wife are pretty tired when he goes to bed at 8 PM or so. Realistically, if I get to watch 10 horror movies in all of October, I'll consider myself lucky. Ahhhh, I remember the days I could have movie marathons....maybe someday down the road....wouldn't change things if I could though. Tim, you will love that flick. Get the soundtrack by Fastway as well. It rocks like no other complete metal soundtrack.

Have you guys seen a movie called Ghosthouse? It's a creepy little haunted house movie...very hard to find, though. I watched it when I was younger. It has an evil little ghost girl and an evil doll (a clown doll perhaps???)
Also, have any of you ever seen Cassandra? That is one movie I'd love to have. Another creepy little movie I saw when I was younger.

80'sRocked, most of my fav 80's movies have less than stellar ratings on imdb.com. Seeing some of my most cherished movies rated so low is just another reminder that the movie watching experience is extremely subjective. It's not always the quality of the movie, but it is the time, the place, the emotions, and the memories associated with a particular 80's movie that makes me love it so.

I totally agree with you Valley. Ratings on other sites or by the the so called "experts", absolutely means nothing to me. I like watching it myself and drawing my own conclusions.

I love Lady in White. I found my copy at Kroger's, of all places.
I don't listen to critics, either. I'd rather watch something and see for myself before I judge it.
And what about Mirror, Mirror? Do you guys remember that one? I wish I could find all these horror movies I love on DVD, new and CHEAP. I don't mind used, but I won't pay $60 for one movie.

PF, I remember Mirror, Mirror, in fact you can find all Mirror, Mirror 1-4 together in one package. Found mine quite cheap which was good seeing as I only like the first one.
I picked up the new Beatlejuice edition today in the store, looked at the special features(not many) and wasn't that impressed for how much they wanted for it $25 at best Buy, so I'm passing on it until the price comes down.

The beginning was a bit slow, but it helps to set up the events that will soon take place. These are a pretty scary group of vamps and there certainly are some gruesome and bloody attacks(all the better for a vamp flick). A very dark movie which takes place in a tiny town in Alaska(population - 153)where there is a 1 month period of total darkness. Definitely worth watching the whole movie. I quite liked it, but I like all vamp flicks.

Just watched Witchboard, 1986. Not the scariest movie ever, in fact, it's not really even that great by horror standards. In spite of all that, I must have seen it dozens of times and quite like it for some odd reason. Perhaps because it stars a young, hot, sane Tawny? Maybe because I had some extraordinary experiences of my own with the Ouija Board when I was younger. Anyway, I think it's worth watching....especially during the Halloween run. There are a couple things I noticed in this movie that I never did before. 1. There is a goof in the scene at the cemetary during Lloyd's funeral. The detective is talking about magic and says he saw Sigmund and Roy....when of course it should have been Siegfried and Roy. 2. In the final scene, ever notice how much Tawny Kitaen looks like Kirsten Dunst? Check it out. They could be twins.

80srocked - the guy that played one of the main characters in witchboard was also on the long lived soap opera days of our lives. his character name was steve, but he wore a patch over one of his eyes so he was given the nickname patch.

I just watched ONE DARK NIGHT a few weeks ago, the DVD came with a 35mm film clip included....neet swag! I hadn't seen the film since VHS days back in the 80's.
It actually holds up really well, even if the film didn't get a restoration the picture is ok for an un-restored 80's B movie that never got the love it deserved, and it is still creepy. Besides..Adam West in a serious role? Boo-Yah!
I personally like watching actual creepy movies around Halloween Time, and to me that means "no slasher flicks" since I really dont consider any of them to be, well, scary. You want scary movies? I like these...
1) Halloween III Season of the Witch. Not only does it have some really nasty gore scenes (tho some are implied if not shown), its just an absolutely damn creepy film on all accounts. The creepy synth score just puts this movie over the top. Yay John Carpenter.
2) The Thing, the John Carpenter Version *AND* The original Howard Hawks version. The first one is great, a near serious 1950's monster movie, and the 80's one is down right brutal....suspense...suspiscion..and some naaasty gore.
3) Yes John Carpenter RETURNS!!! Try PRINCE OF DARKNESS.....I remember being really freaked out by the PREMISE of the film. What if EVIL was tangible, in a physical sense...I know people mocked this movie for its "Evil Slurpy" effects, but keep that in the context of the movie (that the physical embodiment of the son of satan is being let loose, and trying to bring Satan himself to earth to bring about armageddon)...wooooo...Scaaary! Well not really but a creepy movie nontheless. THe very cool "visions from the future that are broadcast into your dreams via technology" adds a cool sci-fi element to the film, you see the end of the world happening...can you STOP IT!?
4)Dawn of the Dead, the original version. Again, I think I see a trend that cool, creepy synth soundtracks make me feel dread....the score by GOBLIN is great in this one....as the world is slowly taken over by corpses. While the "zombie effects" are lame by todays standards for sure, the premise of the movie is really cool...who hasn't wanted to take over a mall and live there!?
5) Poltergeist...the only film that ever actually scared me. has so many creepy elements I can't begin to list them, but spooky haunted attacking tree in the thunderstorm? Come ON people...who didn't have a tree hanging out their window that you NO LONGER TRUSTED? Creepy dolls and toys and, oh yeah....corpses and coffins blowing out of the ground, evil ghost demons flying around, a little girl running from "The Beast" while trapped in the nether world........wow......film at 11!

well done HeadRusch. i couldn't agree more about the music. john carpenter was great with the sounds he created for those movies. i love prince of darkness. 'til this day, it still scares me. it's a highly underrated gem!
i love carpenter's remake of the thing. the spider head is awesome! i have already pulled this movie out of the bin to watch here pretty soon. my copy is still sealed, and i purchased it years ago.

Great stuff Headrusch! Salem's Lot is awesome for it's time. Very spooky indeed. ISIS will love those pictures too. Poltergeist rocks as well....never get sick of that one. Halloween 4 is my favorite of the series. They're all good though.

'Salem's Lot is good. I've neve seen Return to 'Salem's Lot. Has anyone else? I've always wanted to see Prince of Darkness, but it's always been on Sci-fi or something like that. When I watch a movie for the first time I wanna see the whole thing--nothing edited out.
For the record, I've always liked Halloween III. I used to sing that Silver Shamrock song as a kid, LOL.

Tonight's double-feature : The Blob!
I'll be the first to say that "The Blob" (1988) doesn't compare to Steve McQueen's 1958 original, but the upgrade in FX makes it kind of cool. Plus for any Kevin Dillon or Shawnee Smith fans it is a must.

Vamp (1986)
I've never been a huge Dedee Pfeiffer fan, but thought she was great in "Vamp".
Found this little interview by DeDee about "Vamp":
"Out of all the roles I've done, Amaretto from "Vamp" is the closest to me in real life. Of course, there are differences, but there's many more similarities: she's funny, she takes things day-by-day, she's sensitive and when she's into something, she's really into it."
"Vamp" was Pfeiffer's first starring role in a feature film. "I learned a lot on this movie," she says. "I learned more about the production end of filmmaking. What really made this film special was that everyone cared so much about what they were doing. The crew was so passionately involved that it made me become more involved in the whole process. Actually, "The Blob" movies are quite similar in plotline, but comparing Steve McQueen to Kevin Dillon was just so not fair. However, as an 80's fan, I must say that I peferred Shawnee Smith "Summer School" and Donovan Leitch "The In Crowd" over the original 1958 cast members. Also, the special effects while meek in comparsion to what they can do today were much more impressive in the 1988 version.

To escape his own haunted self, he moves across the country, rents a mansion, and begins teaching at a local university. But, a haunting of a different sort occurs with echoing thumps and poltergeist mischief that can't be ignored.

you're giving me the best ideas, valley. i am definitely going to watch the changeling as well. the first time i saw this movie, i was in highschool. a girlfriend of mine had shown it to me and i loved it instantly.
************spoilers*************
the scene where they bring the old lady to the house to speak to the little boy scared me half to death. i cannot watch that part without getting creeped out. she's scribbling the boy's answers on the paper and it just gets so intense.
another freaky scene is where the younger lady is ranting and looks up at the top of the stairs and sees the wheelchair moving...she just freezes as though she sees a ghost. it's hair raising!
i can't wait to watch this one!

I found The Changeling at Sam's Club, quite cheap, around Halloween time a few years ago. I'm sure Amazon has it. The Changeling is a creepy movie. I saw it for the first time when I was in high school, too. I didn't think it was as creepy as Ghost Story, but it was a close second.

Isis, you should watch "Vamp". Only the people that have seen this movie know that it contains the missing "Sixteen Candles" footage about what really happened to Grandpa Howard's au-tooo-mooo-bileee. Let's put it this way....it wasn't a lake. ha

Next up for my Halloween movie viewing this weekend (in betweeen Phillies games )- FUNHOUSE and TERROR TRAIN!!
I never saw Terror Train, but I remember Funhouse being a pretty decent creepfest, starring Elizabeth Berridge from Amadeus and Cooper Huckabee from Urban Cowboy. Hey, anything horror related directed by Tobe Hooper is usually always worth a second look IMO. Comments?

Ronnie, Ghost Story is one of my favorite horror movies--it is very good. When I was a kid it really scared me, so much that my dad told me he wasn't going to let me watch any more scary movies. If you like to read, the book by Peter Straub is also very good.
Funhouse is on TMC or Cinemax or something like that this month. I plan on watching it. I remember seeing it on Scifi when I was in college, and I remember it being good.

From horror master Wes Craven starring Matthew Laborteaux and Kristy Swanson comes a dark tale about a Halloween night prank that went very wrong. The tone of this movie is extremely wicked and twisted, but though the premise is far fetched, it is a October fav of mine and of course Riptide .

I started watching Cheerleader Camp last night...I fell asleep again, right at the same spot I fell asleep last time. I am going to try finishing it tonight. I want to see the end. The hedge clippers through the back of the head scene is pretty gross.
They had some nerdy guys in this movie...for all the cute girls that were in it.
Betsy Russell looks absolutely nothing like she did in Private School. I have never understood how a perm could change a person's looks so drastically...because even her face doesn't look the same.

I have always been a huge fan of "Gremlins", but how many folks have seen the original "Ghoulies"? Not sure how it gained enough notice for a "Ghoulies II", but somehow it happened. I will say that the ghoulies were quite narley looking and there was indeed a wickedly scary clown in it. However, what makes this movie note worthy is that one of the highest paid tv actresses for her work on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" .....Mariska Hargitay started her career in this flick.

i orderd curtains on vhs.. it was a bit expensive . after taking the kids trick or treating on halloween, my best friend and i are waiting til the kids fall asleep and we are going to have a double feature... we are watching CURTAINS and BASKET CASE. i've never seen either of these movies.
hehe i showed her a clip for curtains that i found on youtube (the famous skating rink scene) and it freaked her out lol. i can't wait to watch them both.

I never saw Ghoulies or Basket Case either.
Last night I was staying at a resort for the Autumnfest...and there was absolutely nothing on TV. They didn't have any of the really good channels. Right now...if I have to watch regular TV...my favorite channel is "Chiller". It stunk to not have my computer...and then be trapped with no movies. The weekend was awesome...but no good TV is like torture.

petty - i have never seen basket case but my friend said it was quite cooky and thinks i will like it. it was only 4.99 (brand new) on amazon, so i figured, why not? the plot for this movie is insane lol.

I watched Terror Train on Sat. night. It was okay. I figured out who the killer was pretty early into the film.
I'd recommend it for Halloween viewing because even though it takes place on New Year's Eve, the characters are in costumes the majority of the time. It was kinda suspenseful in parts as well.
Hmm... should I go with Nightmare on Elm Street for this weekend?

I usually figure out the killer way too early in almost all new suspense/mystery flicks that I watch. I actually ruin it for myself! I guess when you've seen so many movies, it becomes easy to predict. Not to mention that Hollywood is running out of original ideas and plots.

I know I've mentioned this before, but my fav Friday the 13th movie actually goes against my no sequels clause. It might be because I saw this one before the original, but my fav is "Friday the 13th: Part 2" with Amy Steel. Also, for any "Scream" fans, I so would have gotten that question right because I knew part 2 was the first one where Jason was the killer.

Tim, "The Howling" is a great movie.

Watched The Howling on Demand today. What a bizarre film. The makeup effects were great, but the plot had so many holes in it! Also, was it trying to be a serious horror film or campy? I didn't get it. It was creepy in parts and gross too however. Overall, I'd give it a Halloween thumbs up.

Saturday Night October 18th: An electric chair gone wrong double feature
During the execution of serial killer Ivan Moser (Lyle Alzado) a prison riot breaks out. By the time the guards gain control of the prison, Moser's body is missing. The prison is soon shut down, and sits abandoned until Director Robert Edwards (Anthony Perkins) decides to film a b-level Women In Prison movie there 18 months later. Along for the shooting are camerawoman Susan (Deborah Foreman) and her pseudo-journalist boyfriend David (Clayton Rohner).
I only recommend this flick for fans of Deborah Foreman and Clayton Rohner as a chance to see them in a different type of movie.
A killer is on the loose in a Los Angeles suburb, and a television repairman with a pronounced limp named Horace Pinker becomes the prime suspect. When the investigating detective, Lt. Don Parker gets too close, Pinker murders Parker's wife and family except for his adopted son, Jonathan, who develops a strange connection to Pinker through his dreams and leads Parker to Pinker's rundown shop. In a shootout in which several officers are killed, Pinker manages to escape. He targets Jonathan's girlfriend, Allison for retribution.

Over the last couple of days, I've seen the following:
AAWIL is a movie that I've seen countless times. It feels slightly dated nowadays, but some parts of it still shine, and make you feel uneasy.
The transformation scene is still hair-raising , and far more frightening than watching any CGI.
As for the restoration to HD DVD, the PQ/SQ are adequate at best.
Film: 7.5/10 PQ: 6/10 SQ: 6/10

Last night I watched Friday The 13th 1 & 2 on DVD.
I'm probably in the minority, but I actually prefered the 2nd one. Also, Jason wearing a sack on his head is a lot scarier than a hockey mask.

Last night I was watching Halloween- with the audio commentary from John Carpenter, Debra Hill and Jamie Leigh Curtis....I have never watched an audio commentary ever...but this movie is so cool to me, and while I was watching and listening to the audio...it made me realize why I like it so much.... John Carpenter says that there is very little blood and violence in this movie, and people think that it is a violent movie, but the beginning scene is the only scene that really shows anything...and you don't even really see the girl being stabbed...and when she falls on the floor ...if you look...she only has a little bit of blood on her. That shot, with her without a shirt on, is really only 1 of 2 scenes that has even a tiny bit of nudity in it.
But, the way they made it....it gave people the perception of being horribly violent.
John Carpenter was talking about how he cast Nick Castle as Michael Meyers...and if you look at him...he's a small guy...but he moved in a way when he walked that made it seem scarier.
Now...they make Jason and Michael Meyers these giant monster men, and they make them incredibly violent...which totally is not what John Carpenter did...which is why his movie did so well and theirs don't.
John Carpenter was talking about the playground scene at the beginning about how the boys were teasing Tommy about the Boogie Man, John Carpenter said...in today's world a kid would pull out a gun and shoot the other kids...and I thought..wow..that he said that.
I like how this movie takes place in a nice Suburban neighborhood. They filmed most of it in California, and threw fall leaves around the set to make it look like fall in Illinois. But, it was really spring in California.
I want to know who the kid was that played Michael Meyers ...at the beginning in the clown outfit. Does anyone know what happened to him, and what he looks like today?

I knew about Kyle Richards...I was at a Halloween party over the weekend, and there were identical twin girls there...but they had costumes on, and one had her hair cut short. But, they looked like Kyle Richards and Tatum O'Neal. I said that.. to the people they were with...and I was suprised they knew who Tatum O'Neal was.

Well, since Michael's really only seen in the shadows or from a distance in this one, and given that Carpenter wanted to show him more as a dark force of evil nature than a human being (I don't think his full name is even mentioned in full at any point during the theatrical cut), it would make sense that he would seem more like a "Shape" than an actual person.
And mentioning the theatrical cut, what does everyone here think of the extended version shown on TV for years (and still sometimes today depending on the network in question)? While the additional scenes added in don't really add anything major and go on a little long, they do mesh quite well with the original footage. I for one really like the scene of Loomis pleading the board of directors to move Michael to a more secure facility; Carpenter does a good job surrounding Donald Pleasance with lots of empty space to give the whole scene a more ominous undercurrent.

Fright Night....gotta love it. Just yesterday I found "Wolfen" at the bottom of my sock drawer....I bought it 1/2 a year ago....ummmm.....I sometimes hide my DVDs from my wife and "blend" them into my collection when she's not home...she may be on to me. Anyway...anyone see this one, and is it any good? Only $2.99, so if it's no good, I can live with that.

Ok. I've just finished watching this, and am pleased to report, that I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The first thing I have to point out is -- it's not scary at all. At least I didn't think so. It's probably more a Sci-Fi/Fantasy thriller than anything else.
Despite that, I found it to be fast paced and full of nudity, er, I mean action. Ok, not so much action.
The special effects were adequate, given the time this movie came out. It also has an excellent soundtrack composed by Henry Mancini.
N.B
There are 2 versions of this movie, 101 mins & 116 mins.
I saw the 116 mins version, and by all accounts, this is the version to watch.

Wolfen is a good movie, I mentioned it at some point in this thread. Anyway, the beginning is my fav part.

This is actually a pretty decent b-movie. It has good special effects, and a nice soundtrack.
I'd recommend this to anybody who loves cheesy 80s horror.

Well, "Night of the Demons" is a cult classic about a bunch of teens that party in an old funeral parlor on Halloween night. Unfortunately, the land that 'Hull House' is on is evil. And the house itself has a brutal past. Where would be a better place to party on Halloween than at Hull House folks?
So, they party there. Stuff happens and then they decide to do a seance. I don't know if it was the seance that resurrected the demonic spirit, or if it was just the fact that the demon was free to walk the earth on Halloween night and the timing was right on the money? Either way, things start going downhill from there.

Kev- I do the same thing to my husband! I get new DVDs and filter them in with the old ones in our cabinet. If he happens to find it, he usually asks "when did we get this?". My response is always "oh, we've had that for a while". And he always buys it!!

Finally got my copy of Night of the Demons today and had to watch it tonight. I always loved this one back in the day. Saw it on cable numerous times and I'm glad I own it now. Got the unrated version too....more blood and gore! The kid brother, Billy, is hilarious. This is a must see for the Halloween run.

OK. So, Freddy Krueger, Joanie from Joanie Loves Chachi, and My Favorite Martian walk into a bar. No, no, this isn’t a joke — I’m pretty sure it must have happened during the filming of "Galaxy of Terror", an awesome little movie made inexplicably entertaining by b-movie legend Roger Corman and a very young James Cameron. If you don't take this flick too seriously and just enjoy the ride, it is actually quite entertaining.

"Blood Birthday" is about three 10 year old kids that were born during a total eclipse that blocked Saturn as well. And Astrology states that Saturn controls emotions. So basically these kids grew to be vicious emotionless killers. Because they are so young and innocent looking, nobody suspects them.

Watched Silver Bullet tonight. This is some great flick....not just for the horror aspect. Haim was excellent as he always was in his 80's movies. Busey was pretty good as well.
I haven't seen this movie in years, but for anyone that enjoys analyzing dreams or even scarier....nightmares, this is a movie you need to watch. I highly recommend this movie for anyone that hasn't seen it yet. Dennis Quaid is excellent as a guy with a special gift recruited by the government, but the real star is David Patrick Kelly who will truely give you nightmares. Fans of the flick "Commando" will remember him a Sully, but he plays an even darker character in "Dreamscape".

Salem's Lot was on the Chiller Channel the other night, ...I have never seen it, because I was scared to death of the previews-when I was a kid...so I thought it was time to try and watch it...I must have missed something in the first 60 seconds, because the volume was turned down too low, but right from the beginning of the movie-I was totally confused and lost...and it didn't seem very good...I fell asleep....but what I had seen...wasn't anything like what I thought it would be.

I had a dream last night about Lou Ferrigno. I was dreaming that he came to visit me at the house I grew up in. I have crazy weird dreams all the time, infact I never feel like I sleep because I dream so much. I went to a sleep clinic once, and they hooked me up to one of those machines...to check your brain waves...I felt like I was in Nightmare on Elm Street.
I need to find Silver Bullet...I keep forgetting about it. I can't remember where I put it. I moved all my movies around to decorate for Halloween.

Just watched this last night and I thought it was very good. I especially enjoyed the Snakeman. Those clay animations were great back in the day....reminded me of Clash of the Titans. Great post and recommendation Valley.

I looked for it for years before I finally found it on Amazon. It was part of a drive-in double feature, along with Blood Song, which was actually a better movie, I thought. Now, there is a newer movie called Mortuary, with Dee Wallace Stone, which is VERY good.

I thought it was pretty crap to be honest. It wasn't at all scary, and the only good things about it were the music & Paxton.
The cover is also misleading.
I'm going to play it safe tonight, and watch Poltergeist. I never tire of watching that.
It's not exactly scary either, but at least it has a well written storyline and actors that don't appear to be cardboard cut-outs.
What is everyone else watching?

It's described as a mixture of Sci-fi/Horror. I think it's a bit of a stretch calling it a horror movie, but there are moments of suspense.
It certainly doesn't compare to 'Alien' when it comes to talking about classic Sci-fi/Horror.
Overall though, I think it's a fairly decent movie. Well worth watching.

Ive been trying to keep it horror-themed lately which isnt too hard to do cuz 90 percent of my collection IS horror. Ive been trying to catch some stuff on TV though and so far all Ive caught is REAR WINDOW and THE DEVILS ADVOCATE. Out of my own collection I watched DR GIGGLES (which I havent seen since the early 90s. I didnt love it then and I still dont love it now!) and LEMORA which is a good vampire flick I recommend. I watched some of the Old School NOSFERATU but Im sorry to admit I have a hard time sitting still for those silent movies!
If theres nothing on TV tonight I think I might watch SILVER BULLET.

How was Trick r' Treat? I have it for tonight! Seemed like they were right on the edge of making a big deal of this last year and then it never got released. Bryan Singer produced, written an ddirected by michael dougherty who wrote Suprman Returns & X2. Looked like it was going to have that Creepshow/Halloween III vibe to it.

I bought TRICK R TREAT too. My best friend is DYING to see it and he wont be over til the end of next week so it sits in my lving room un-opened. ahhh well.
The other day someone on a horror message board highly recommended a "horror comedy" called RED VICTORIA and so I rented that. Yeesh. What a dud!I turned it off about 40 minutes in and watched DOLLS. You gotta love a horror movie that stars the chick from the AHA Take On Me video! And its only an hour and 15 minutes long so it was a pretty good Quick Pick.

I just finished Trick r' Treat. Not a terrifying movie by any means, but you relaize they aren't going for that from the first frame. It is cool, creepy and loads of fun though! Very atmospheric and the perfect movie to get you in the holiday spirit (hee hee). Well worth the time to pop some pocorn and sit down for a watch...Enjoy!

There was a preview of a movie called The Hills Run Red that looked good. I saw it at Walmart yesterday but passed up on it. I think I may buy it though, after seeing the previews. I also bought Laid to Rest--has anyone seen it?

I would have to say that this little fella was doing a pretty good job of creeping me out too...until...well you know.
I liked how they were all interwoven and there were little touchstones throughout. The bus story certainly had the creepiest and lasting images while I do think the Anna Paquin story was very strong.
Was it just me or did it seem like the principal's son might have had a story line that may have ended up on the cutting room floor? I could see them doing more of these every couple of years with more stories following the little jumpsuited host! Sure it won't happen though...

Last night my daughter had to work on a school project and said I could watch whatever I wanted if I hung out in her room with her so I ended up popping on the TALES FROM THE CRYPT box set. It was hard to turn it off once I started watching it! I think I watched it from 6 pm -12 am!

I tend to stay away from remakes since Rob Zombie raped and then threw up on HALLOWEEN.
I saw half of FRAYED and then a friend showed up and wanted to watcdh GAME SHOW NETWORK cuz Sulu from STAR TREK and his husband were gonna be on NEW NEWLYWED GAME (thye won too!) so I guess tonight I watch Part 2 of FRAYED.

Mostly kids stuff for me as well. Introducing my three year old to The Great Pumkin Charlie Brown, Garfield's Halloween, The Flintstones Meet Rockula and Frankenstone...hey...at least they're classics that I still enjoy!
* Shamefully...I did recently watch Hocus Pocus...by myself. Don't give up hope on me yet horror fans...I have a 100 + horror movies and hoping to start my Halloween run soon.

I saw EDEN LAKE awhile back and really enjoyed it. My best friend watched it with me and he was like "meh" but it was a movie that sorta stuck with me long after the credits rolled, ya know what I mean? It kinda "ruined" my day, hahaha. But as a horror movie it worked. It was POSSIBLE and those movies always scare me more than Boogie-Man stuff.
I have TRICK R TREAT in my house but havent watched em yet.
I watched the 70s movie SQUIRM sober the other day. Something told me I shoulda done a Beer Run and that somethin was right! But its a movie I remember them playing on channel ALL THE TIME as a kid so i felt like I should finally watch The Whole Thing.
Been watching a lot of GOOSEBUMPS and TALES FROM THE CRYPT with my daughter. Ive said it before and Ill say it again, I thank God for GOOSEBUMPS. Its made watching "scary shows" with my daughter so much easier. Its like from GOOSEBUMPS you work your way into watching stuff like TWILIGHT ZONE,TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE and TALES FROM THE CRYPT.

Has anyone seen the remake of Last House on the Left? I hear mixed things about it. Some say it is really just brutal and terrible. I really don't have much stomach for the torture stuff anymore like Hostel, Saw, etc. I still love my scary movies, but find myself drifting back to the old school stuff a little more (Halloween, Friday the 13th, Children on the Corn, Saturday the 14th Strikes Back ).
I am sure my parents had a fit when they saw that stuff back then, what we were watching and were probably just disgusted. Probably just showing my age more than anything.
But what of The Last House...? More like old school horror with more "jumps" and "scares" or am I going to see stomach turning stuff...you know what I'm talking about I am sure.

My teenage nieces hated it , were thoughoughly disgusted. they say there is no entertainment value in watching people get beaten raped and tortured. As a horror enthusiast I have to agree to a level. I much prefer suspense and The Chase then watching these movies where people are held captive and slowly humiliated and or tormented.
I havent seen the original LHOTL since I was a teenager but I remember not being very "moved " by it. then again - I like I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, so what do I know?

I watched an old movie (dont know if its from 70s or early 80s) called DEAD OF NIGHT. This might have even been a Made For TV movie: not sure. Well, anway, it has three stories and while the first ones a dud and the second one is only mildly better the third one was a keeper (I had heard about it over the years so thats why i was looking to rent this) Its called BOBBY and its about this mother who has a Satanic ritual to try to bring her son back from the dead. And it WORKS. But liek so often happens in these movies he isnt the sweet little boy he was when he died anymore! He's E-VILLLLLL! My daughter loved it and ended up sleeping in my room alst night so while it didnt scare the crap out of ME it did work wonders for her!

I did see Let The Right One In. Highly enjoyable,but I was not as moved by it as the accolades the critics were pouring on it. Still, good story, good visuals and nice and moody. You will most likely find good stuff to like in it.

last night we watched alien movies on the amc channel and this morning i watched The Shaft on sci-fi these channels have the 30 days of halloween going so no need to put in my dvd's except for the shining which i bought on dvd and they are showing it tomorrow on amc at 6;30 p.m. rather watch the dvd uncut! i also watched ghost voyage today and part of lake dead! tonight we are gonna watch ghost town on syfy ay 9;00 in between the hockey game never saw that movie yet?

Well, I just rented The Deadly Friend. My sister loved that movie and we had fun watching on Turner South (GA). They fuzzied up the gory parts but it was still fun. And since it's my birthday tomorrow, I'm going to be watching whatever movies I want. Sleepy Hollow (Tim Burton) Evil Dead 1 and 2 Army of Darkness The Lost Boys Casper (for my kid) All my Vincent Price movies Teenage Zombies (old old old and cheap cheap cheap) I need to get to Wal mart if they truly have Fright Night.

I watched both Fright Night 1 & 2 last night. The 2nd one was a lot better than I thought it was going to be.
Fright Night also has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. 80s or any other time.

Blood Cult is a bad b-movie Buffalo, but it is a classic and has a cult following. I couldn't find it on youtube so I will post it up there myself. I'll give you the link to part 1 after I do.

Oh I absolutely love Prince of Darkness! This was an 80's movie (1987), so of course it rocked, but it was just so cool on so many levels. Truly a "John Carpenter movie" from beginning to end. The stark title card. The random non-sequiter style scenes and jump cuts. The great low, grumbling, repetitive synth soundtrack. Just filled with great visuals and "boxed in" kind of claustrophobic feel to it.
A good effort to be more than just a "start introducing them and start knocking 'em down" horror flick. It took a shot at physics, theology, the nature of the universe, good and evil and was filled with great lines like Anything traveling faster than the speed of light would appear to be going backward in time. and What is it? A secret that can no longer be kept.

Just watched Spasms (1983)
- This was not very good giant snake flick. 2-3 pretty graphic death scenes and that´s it. Somehow they have managed to get Tangerine Dream to write the end credits tune "Serpents theme" and even that was a bad one. Starring Oliver Reed, Peter Fonda and Kerrie Keane.

I watched "Deadly Friend" last night...might get banned from the posts...but...I didn't like it I didn't see it as a kid, and find that sometimes makes a big difference...this was my first viewing, so at 36 years old...didn't cut it for me. My wife works til 11 PM tonight...trying to get my little fella to bed for 8 PM, then watch a horror movie...I'll let yas know which one later.

Just finished watching the original Frankenstein movie from 1931 w' Boris Karloff. This was an awesome movie with great visuals...really really liked it. Funny...I always thought I had seen this movie at one point or another, but apparently not.
* The Universal Legacy Collections are great...I have Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, and The Mummy so far...love these classics.

I highly recommend checking out The Invisible Man and Werewolf of London if you haven't already done so. My favourites of the old universals.

I actually started early this year..
"Halloween II" was released on blu-ray recently and after discussing with Ronnie who ranks it high on her list of favs .. it was just too hard to wait until Halloween to watch it this year. It was such a fun watch that I might just view it again soon.
I have yet to dive into the extras.. but I'm totally gonna watch the 1984 horror documentary "Terror In The Aisles" which was included as a surprising bonus feature.
"Halloween II" on blu-ray did not disappoint!
The picture quality was excellent and it caused me to notice little details about the movie like never before. Also, the sound was so crisp and clear .. it actually made me jump in my seat a couple of times like I was watching it for the first time all over again.
The original "Halloween' from 1978 which I consider the best horror movie ever made and this movie will always be on my Halloween rotation. And I must say that after watching "Halloween II" on blu-ray.. it gave me a new appreciation for this film.
Oh.. I'm sure most of you horror buffs know all the backstory between the director Rick Rosenthal and John Carpenter before the film was released, but I still find it fascinating.

I'm so heavy into house renovations, I'm not even sure where the TV is!! A bit late starting in this year, but hope to get my Halloween movie watchin' goin' soon. I have about 70 or so Halloween episodes from some of my favorite old shows: Alf, Barney Miller, Cheers, Everybody Hates Chris (I didn't watch this show, but in the Halloween episode, he dresses up as Prince....pretty funny), Frasier, Happy Days, MASH, Punky Brewster, etc, etc....even have Halloween episodes for MacGyver and Knight Rider. Also, I'm not a big Simpsons fan but for some reason, this year I want to watch some of the Treehouse of Horror episodes.
As far as movies, I might kick it off with something light, maybe ...Monster Squad.

Veronica Sawyer.. "Waxwork" is a great flick to start the season off with!
I swiped this from my "Waxwork" thread:
A wax museum owner uses his horror exhibits to unleash evil on the world. "Waxwork" had a great premise and the FX/make-up is far above standard 80's horror. The exhibit scenes within the movie were awesome.
The cast was 80's cool with Zach Gilligan, Deborah Foreman, Michelle Johnson, Dana Ashbrook, Eric Brown, and Miles O'Keeffe.
But what were Johnson and Foreman thinking.. first both notice a Waxwork house appear in their neighborhood out of nowhere as they are walking to school..
..then suddenly a creepy guy in a purple suit that even Prince might question greets them... next, same scary dude invites both of these obviously underage high school girls plus four of their friends to a private midnight showing.
.. I will say the movie holds together and plays as a horror/comedy flick... though the ending is less than stellar. I really liked how the homage to "Night of the Living Dead" scenes were filmed in black & white.
As everyone knows.. I'm a fan of Deborah Foreman because of the movie "Valley Girl". While "Waxwork" is not at the top of my list .. her performance was quite interesting and definitely entertaining! ha
Here's a little trivia:
* Writer/director Anthony Hickox wrote the screenplay in only 3 days.
* Effects artist Bob Keen spent 18 hours a day for eight weeks working on the monsters in the film.
* During the scene in the basement of the vampire's mansion, crew on the sets said that it was "The bloodiest thing ever put to the screen". Much of the gore in the scene was cut by the MPAA.
* 18 wax horror exhibits are seen, including: - Count Dracula - The Phantom of the Opera - a witch - The Marquis De Sade - a werewolf - a mummy - a voodoo priest - zombies aka Night of the Living Dead - an urban legend killer (axe murderer) - The Invisible Man - Frankenstein's monster - Invasion of the Body Snatchers pod - a demonic baby from It's Alive - an alien creature - a "cobra-man" circus freak - Jack the Ripper - Mr. Hyde - and a Golem.
* After the policeman visits the Waxwork with Mark, he realizes that many of the statues of the victims resemble missing people from posters he had seen. These posters are actually just copies of one of the posters from the opening credits of the 1987 film 'The Lost Boys'. All of the missing person posters have a single photo of a missing adult, but the posters all have the same information of two missing children on the poster: William G. Bailey 7-26-62 Sandy blond hair brown eyes Missing since August 6, 1979 (or 1973) Call the Santa Carla Police Department Susan Wilbur 5-30-69 Black Hair Blue Eyes Missing since February 6, 1983

And Kev.. we might have discussed this in a different section of the board last year.. but "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" has a couple of excellent Halloween episodes in my opinion.
Season 2, Episode 6 - “Halloween”
It’s amazing how costumes can change one’s persona on Halloween. It’s the only time of year that the shy guy might actually appear to be the confident and sexy beast that is within him. What a person wears as a Halloween costume can sometimes reveal a lot. This episode of Buffy illustrates this concept perfectly. It’s Halloween in Sunnydale, and everyone’s turning into their costumes. Buffy is an 18th century damsel in distress; Willow is a ghost, and Xander is a hyper army guy. With Buffy out of commission, and Xander out of his mind, Willow gets to take over and really allows herself to be confident.
Season 4, Episode 4 - “Fear, Itself”
This is one of my all-time fav Buffy episodes! It has a haunted house and has some truly wicked moments. Buffy can’t bring herself to face the guy who jilted her. Willow’s continuing usage of magic is of concern to everyone but herself. Oz is afraid he’ll lose control of his wolf side. And Xander is afraid he’s becoming invisible, since he’s the only one of his friends not in college.
Problem is.. the haunted house our 'Scooby Gang' is trapped in actually amplifies their fears, and the only thing that can save them is facing fear itself. This episode is a great combination of scares and laughs with a twist ending.
Season 6, Episode 6 - “All the Way”
Just like her big sister Buffy... Dawn Summers finds herself falling for the wrong guy. She has her first kiss and then has to stake the guy. Yup, surprise, surprise, he’s a vampire.

I watched "Halloween II" on my PS3 without issues. But I do own a Samsung Blu-ray player that is in another room. Ouchy!
Ronnie must have watched it on her PS3 as well.
Hope you get to watch the "Halloween II" on blu-ray before Halloween. At least you can still watch "Night of the Creeps" without issue.. right?

Nope. I would have, ..my PS3 was getting repaired. My hard drive needed to be replaced. I have a Sony Blu-ray player and it played fine.

I don't think that this issue is limited to Samsung. I have a Vizio that is about a year-and-half old, and while it works well for the stuff that I have (never tried Halloween II), they've never upgraded the firmware. Other folks have pointed out-and I've personally experienced--that if you try to do so on-line, it returns an error message instead of saying "no upgrade available." That's really stupid. And don't get me started on the el cheapo "Insignia" BluRay (Best Buy's house brand) that I bought for my bedroom. You used to be able to upgrade the firmware through the menu--and it worked. Then one of the upgrades removed the ability to upgrade the firmware, and I was scratching my head wondering what the heck they'd done. Next thing I know, I got a DVD in the mail with the latest firmware upgrade, which added back the ability to upgrade on-line. Stupidest stuff I've ever seen... We have been watching Friday the 13th: The Series for the past month now. My husband still loves it- me not so much. But he insists on watching an episode during lunch. I guess I'll be watching one today, lol!

David Cronenberg actually directed an episode of "Friday the 13th: The Series." I believe that it was the one with the haunted scalpel. (He must've been really, really bored at the time. )

I was never a huge fan of Friday The 13th the tv series.. maybe if I gave it a chance now I might think differently. Were there any cool episodes with actors we enjoy from some our cherished 80's movies?
And I saw the first "Hatchet" movie a few years back .. it was decent and way gory. I like the 'old school american horror' tagline.. not a fav for me, but worth watching at least once.

I couldn't be bothered to wait until later, so have just finished watching it....
I actually really enjoyed it. I wasn't too sure at the beginning, but it picked up, and like Valley pointed out, is one of the goriest movies I've ever seen.
I was really impressed with most of the death scenes.
It was also cool to see Robert Englund and Tony Todd -- albeit *briefly*.

i have waxworks on dvd,great movie,a lot of fun,i've always liked deborah foreman and zach galligan .
never seen part 2 though, was it any good?
at the moment i am just in the process of watching 1988 slasher flick hide and go shriek about a group of college kids shut in a furniture store with a cross dressing psychopath,i have it on a dutch dvd,i'm sure it's the uncut version, not seen it for a few year,but think i remember thinking it was pretty decent!

Valley, I do not recognize any of the guest actors. I think it is probably due to the show having been filmed in Canada. I think the guest actors are all Canadians, and I have yet to see one I know, with the exception of the guy from Just Shoot Me ( I can't think of his name right now- Enrico something?).

Just watched Blood Song (1982) aka Dream Slayer in the UK.
It was a good horror movie starring Donna Wilkes (Jaws 2, Angel) Frankie Avalon, Richard Jaeckel, Antoinette Bower, William Kirby Cullen and Dane Clark.
Lots of Halloween influences in this one: mental institution escape, small town during autumn, pulsating synth score, killer waiting in his van near the schoolyard and hiding behind hedges etc.
Not a bad Halloween flick, check it out guys!

A mysterious teacup gives an elderly woman the power of eternal youth -- at a cost.
It's an OK series so far. Apparently it gets better midway through the season, so we'll see.
I kinda wish I picked up "The Outer Limits" or "The Twilight Zone" instead.

Basket Case may be an acquired taste, but it definitely does NOT suck ! I'm very curious about how it looks on blu-ray though. Apparently Frank Hennenlotter and Something Weird Video had new source materials to work with, and created a brand new transfer. I think the extra's are the same as on their special edition dvd from a decade ago.

Basket Case and its sequels aren't my favorites of Hennenlotter's films. I love Brain Damage, Bad Biology, and, of course, the inimitable Frankenhooker.

Watched the 80s version of the Invaders from Mars (1986) last night. The last time i saw this was in the late 80s.
Definitely not as effective as it was back then but it´s still fun Cannon group horror film for kids.
Directed by Tobe Hooper and featuring a typical b-movie cast. I still loved the atmosphere, the great settings and old school effects and puppetry. I also like the score, composed by Christopher Young, very much.
Still entertaining movie if you don´t take it too seriously.
This is just an OK remake. The 1953 original, while obviously not nearly as technically proficient, is still the better film. Tobe Hooper, apart from a couple of episodes of "Nowhere Man," hasn't done anything even halfway decent in over 20 years. A shame...

@j2me - awsomely scary movie for me, i love werewolf movies...not a pinch at all on american werewolf in London though...just a different clss of movie in my opinion...howling is a little freakier but from a cinemaphotography point of view and of course a great werewolf 80s embassador movie for our beloved decade you cant (for certain) and i challenge an argument from anyone...AWWIL is just awsome.

helen s i agree with you on halloween 2(2009),it was a bit of a mess ,but if that warrants a 4/10 i reckon black water warrants a 7/10,wasn't quite as good as the other croc flick rogue but overall i didn't dislike it and actually thought it was pretty good . helen did you really dislike the collector that much,must admit to having the blu ray and actually think it's a pretty cool flick!
p.s - helen don't forget savage streets is on tonight on the horror channel.
tobe hoopers invaders from mars remake is a fun movie,i have it on a mgm double sided disc with another fun 80s sci/fi/horror strange invaders.
i also agree an american werewolf in london all the way,howling is great, but not as good as john landis's classic werewolf hit!

I'm afraid so about The Collector, it made me want to throw things lol. I preferred another film I watched by the Black Water director recently, The Reef. That had some really tense moments. I'll have to see Rogue

I guess I'm one of the few Halloween 2 fans on here! It wasn't awesome or anything, but it was decent.
As for Basketcase, ugh!! I hated that stupid movie!!! I didn't even bother with the sequels.
I didn't like the Collector either. I love horror movies, but torture just for the sake of torture isn't for me.

Late chiming bak in. Thanks for the input Valley...I'll check out the Buffy episodes...I believe I have em all. And....I just love when you guys start talking about an old movie...and then I magically find it in a store where it has no business being....that being said, just scooped the Waxwork double feature at Zellers for $6! Also this past week, picked up The Fly 1 + 2, Psycho 2, Cujo, Exorcist 2 (I'm told, a waste of money, but for $5..couldn't resist), Candyman, and Wrong Turn.
A reminder about the recent release of Trick 'r Treat....I freakin loved this movie....one of the best modern Halloween flicks I've seen!

Totally enjoying reading what everyone is watching as well as her/his thoughts about the films!!
i actually revisted "Creepshow" and "Creepshow 2" for the first time in years today. Penned by Stephen King with help from George A. Romero these were both staples on HBO during the 80's. It was fun to watch them today and see so many familiar faces .. Leslie Nielsen, Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Ted Danson, Ed Harris, EG Marshall, George Kennedy, Tom Savini, and Lois Chiles.
Here's a reminder of what you get from each film:
Creepshow:
Father's Day
The first story concerns the Grantham family, whose matriarch Great Aunt Bedelia killed her demanding father Nathan in a rage seven years ago on Father's Day. The Granthams are rather happy about the death of the miserly Nathan because it allowed them to inherit paet of his fortune, but this year things go differently; Nathan rises from his grave as a vengeful zombie and begins killing off his relatives one by one in a quest for his "cake".
The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill
The second story revolves around Jordy Verrill, a backwoods bumpkin who, after being infected by the juice inside a meteorite that crashes in his yard, gets a little more growth out of his plants than he can handle.
Something To Tide You Over
Richard Vickers, a rich and jealous husband, decides to get revenge on his cheating wife Becky and her lover Harry in a creatively cruel manner, but learns too late that the tide has a way of bringing things back.
The Crate
A professor sees the release of a dangerous creature from a crate delivered to his college as a surefire way to rid himself of his monster of a wife.
They're Creeping Up On You
Upson Pratt, a mean old business tycoon with a fear of insects, gets bugged by roaches after he causes the suicide of an employee.
Creepshow 2:
Old Chief Wood'nhead
Ray and Martha Spruce own a hardware store in Dead River, a town that now lives up to its name. While it used to be a prosperous community, many of its citizens have now moved on. Due to the lack of customers, Ray spends his afternoons talking to Old Chief Wood'nhead, the wooden Indian that stands in front of the store. When the Spruces are robbed and murdered one night, the only witness is Old Chief Wood'nhead. He comes to life in order to seek vengeance for his slain friends.
The Raft
Four college students decide to spend the day relaxing and swimming at a secluded lake. While swimming out to a permanent raft in the middle of the water, Randy notices a rather odd looking oil slick. After Rachel gets to curious about the unusual slick, the remaining three try to figure out a way to escape the raft and make it back to shore.
The Hitchhiker
After spending the evening at a male escort's apartment, Annie Lansing realizes she has about twenty minutes to beat her husband home from work. While racing home, she accidently strikes a hitchhiker with her car. Feeling guilty about the accident (but not guilty enough to stay for the police), she leaves the man to die in the road. Annie soon discovers that her problems are far from over, as the hitchhiker is not finished with her yet.
The Wrap-around Story
Billy is a young boy who is fascinated with horror comic books. Not only does he think they're fun to read, but they allow him to order such exotic merchandise as Venus Fly Traps! After picking up one of his packages from the post office, Billy is accosted by some local bullies who will regret that move soon enough.
To be honest, while both movies were fun to watch again.. there is one segment that I consider by far the best:
The Raft:
"The Raft" which is the second segment of "Creepshow 2" is not only the best of all the tales in the Creepshow movies in my opinion, it’s one of the best short horror films of all time. A foursome of college students take a road-trip out to a private lake for some funny, only to get stranded on an anchored wooden raft by a floating black glob of evil goo. It’s a tense, scary, and highly entertaining ..

i've watched hide and go shriek from 1988 about a group of teens who spend a night partying in one of there parents furniture store,not realising there being stalked by a cross dressing pyschopath.
nothing amazing but still quite good fun and far from being the worse of its type!
also watched sorority house massacre from 1986 which despite some of the usual shortcomings(microphone boom makes several guest appearances and like hide and go shriek some of the acting leaves a lot to be desired) turns out to be a decent enough low budget slasher!

again like hide and go shriek nothing amazing but still pretty watchable and at the end of the day i have seen so much worse!

FINALLY watched "The Midnight Hour" today! Sorta reminded me of "Hocus Pocus" mixed with the Halloween episode of "My So-Called Life." Loved the usage of "How Soon is Now" during the party scenes and I thought the makeup and costumes were all pretty awesome. The ending was pretty cute too with the love story I think this will definitely be a movie I watch every fall!

I decided to watch "Insidious" as well last night. One of my recent blind buys.
I'm really glad I picked it up -- I thought it was extremely well made, not to mention very creepy.
Well, the first 3/4 of it anyway...
It could be described as Poltergeist meets The Exorcist, and, whilst it isn't as good as either of those, it's a great addition to my Blu-ray library.

Watched The Wind (1987) aka Edge of Terror yesterday.
A decent horror thriller set on a small Greek island. The movie was directed by Nico Mastorakis. Starring Meg Foster, Wings Hauser, David McCallum, Robert Morley and Steve Railsback.
Some eerie scenes and Hauser gives a wicked performance as Phil the wacko. Decent soundtrack once again from Mastorakis regulars Stanley Myers and Hans Zimmer.

Good addition to the "Scream" series. I need to see the first 2 again to determine how it compares. I already know it is a lot better than the 3rd one.
I ended up buying the French release, as it came with a load of features. Unlike the UK version, which only had the trailer.

My thought is Crash will probably appreciate this movie. I personally rank "Suspiria" as Dario Argento's greatest work and I appreciate both "Tenebre" and "Phenomena" from the 80's as excellent horror films. Crash.. why is the book in the movie titled "Tenebrae", but the movie "Tenebre"?
Anyway.. I actually thought "Inferno" was a very stylish supernatural thriller which centered around the idea that three ancient mothers–witches–live inside custom built structures in three major cities. Rose Elliot becomes obsessed with the story behind these witches, which soon puts everyone she knows and loves in great danger. Essentially, "Inferno" is a nightmarish haunted house film with incredibly spooky moments and rather gory death scenes. And if you are a cat-lover .. beware!
While the first part of this supposed trilogy, "Susperia", is regarded as a masterpiece of sorts.. it appears Inferno‘s reputation is not nearly as solid though it doesn’t quite get the thrashing that the final installment, 2007‘s "Mother of Tears", receives. Though I've yet to see it to truly give my opinion.
I know several of you are probably shocked to find out that I enjoyed this movie since it is out of my normal scope of horror viewing, but let me bring the guy in the pic above in a little closer for a second look to explain it better..
That's right "Just One of the Guys" fans.. one of the stars of "Inferno" is Leigh McCloskey or better known to many of us .. Kevina! I have to admit that he was actually the weakest link in this film, but maybe that was just because his 70's looking mustache was so distracting. ha!
Overall, I thought "inferno' was visually shocking and way creepy. Especially the underwater hole in the basement floor scene with Irene Miracle that was just stunning to watch and made the movie for me. 'Beautifully chilling' might be a better description.
So I've got to mention Daria Nicolodi the long-term partner of Dario Argento who was great in this film, but more than her acting.. I need to share this statement she made years later in a magazine article:
"I wrote Suspiria for Argento... title, subject and script. The inspiration came from a tale my grandmother, Yvonne, used to tell me when I was a child, after an experience she had in a northern acting academy where she discovered the teachers were teaching arts, but also black magic. I was fond of this story of her's more than Pinnocchio by Collodi, and when I told it to Dario it was natural for him to fall in love with it too. It was his first step from thrillers to fantasy-alchemy movies and we did it together."
This interesting picture of Ania Pieroni from "Inferno" makes me so wish now that the final installment of thsi trilogy had been made in the 80's. If you are looking at the picture and thinking you know that girl from something.. my first thought is "Tenebre" mentioned above. But it could be "The House By Cemetary" for some of you horror fans.

The film is spelt Tenebrae here. Inferno is one of the few Argento films I don't rate highly. Just does nothing for me this one.

Tip o' the hat, Valley. Inferno is terrific. For years it was very hard to see. Despite having a big hit with Suspiria, 20th Century-Fox kept this in the vault, unreleased, for years. They then put it out on VHS, but no one ever saw a copy.The later Anchor Bay DVD was a blessing. This is a a gorgeous looking film with Argento's beautiful use of color and startlingly creepy scenes. I agree that Suspiria is Argento's greatest film, but Inferno is excellent. Sadly, the trilogy ended with the ludicrous The Mother of Tears, one of his worst. Argento is possibly the greatest, yet least known, world-class director ever.
I believe that Tenebrae is the genitive case in Latin and means "of shadows." Tenebre means simply "shadows."

J2ME, I have this film in more versions that you can imagine--from a blurry PAL copy of the Argento cut to the "ultimate" DVD version. I like Argento's version. I've seen Dawn so many times that the Argento cut felt like a different film to me. Have you seen the "non-theatrical version," that is, the version that orignally was rented in 16mm to college campuses? It's actually longer than the director's cut, as I recall. Tom Savini once said that there is a "German TV version" floating around that has most of the violence removed. That must be similar to the ill-fated "R" rated U.S. re-release of the film along with "Creepshow" in 1982. It ran for exactly one week, lots of folks complained, and it got pulled. A friend of mine actually saw it out of curiosity (he's the only person I've ever met who has), and he said that everything was a cut-away--the shotgun is pulled up, it's fired, and then the film cuts away without showing what happened... He said that it was just terrible!
Too many versions! ROFL.

definitely worth getting atomik,i reckon you would really like it. the unnamable(i have the region 2 uk double disc from anchorbay which also includes the sequel) and phantom (i have the region 1 disc from mgm,it's the cut r rated version but that seems to be the only version in circulation at the moment ,both of these are also a lot of fun .

This thread is depressing me this year....October 24 and I've yet to watch one horror / Halloween movie...my worst slump yet. I'm trying to be happy for J2ME and all the movie's they've got to watch, but, a bit of envy as well. I will continue to try.....wife's working tonight until 11 PM....little guy in bed by 8 PM and I just may be able watch a movie. Question is....which one!

I love this time of year! Watched a few movies lately: The Stepfather, Fortress, Nightmare On Elm Street Parts 3-5, Wrong Turn, and Friday The 13th parts 1,2,3,and 5. I somehow don't have part 4 but will be trying to rectify that this weekend. Planning to save Halloween, Near Dark and The Monster Squad for the 31st.

watched robert englund's 976 evil http://youtu.be/DjxqnUBV0Wc with stephen geofreys,remember when i first watched it back in the late 80s feeling a bit dissapointed with it but after watching it again yesterday have changed my oppinion completely,it's actually a pretty cool and fun horror flick,enjoyed it a lot!
also watched x-ray aka hospital massacre a low budget 80s slasher from cannon pictures,really daft slasher this one but one which also happens to be very entertaining, directed by boaz davidson and starring the very attractive barbi benton.
i purchased a dvd-r of this of someone on ebay as it's never had an official dvd release, i always thought i had the uncut copy of this but it turns out i have the heavily edited 77 min version and that there's a uncut version out there on the mgm label that runs for 89 minutes, i'd like to get my hands on that.
last one i watched was mother's day http://youtu.be/EhdAn-alJDI starring rebecca demornay,pretty decent flick this with some real gruesome torture scenes that will probably make even the most hardcore of horror fans cringe.
next one on my list to watch is link from 1986 starring elizabeth shue and terence stamp,not seen it since it's original release in the mid 80s.

A ski vacation turns horrific for a group of medical students, as they find themselves confronted by an unimaginable menace: Nazi zombies.
A really well made Zombie flick. After seeing the cover, and reading a bit more about this -- how could I not buy it?
This is well worth buying on Blu-ray -- it looks stunning.
Norway is a very beautiful country, and they really show it off:

Tonight I decided to watch:
It takes a bashing from Halloween fans, but I actually kind of enjoyed it.
To be honest I found it more interesting than some of the sequels. The soundtrack was also excellent -- very creepy.

Ever since Ronnie mentioned "Deadly Friend" in the Zombie thread I've been wanting to watch it again. Finally got a chance on Friday night to kickoff my Halloween weekend.
Watching it was a blast! Was anyone else surprised to find out that Wes Craven directed "Deadly Friend"? Though watching the homage to the basement boiler room and burning up one of the characters should have been a tip.
While "Deadly Friend" is best remember from your childhood and that infamous basketball scene, I must say it was fun to watch after several years and appreciate it for the 80's elements.
In the 80's.. Matthew Labyorteaux was the reason so many people went to see this movie, but Kristy Swanson was the real star and did a fantastic job considering she was only 16 and fairly new on the scene. My favorite character was actually Tom played by Michael Sharrett. I had totally forgotten how much humor he added to this horror flick. Plus, Tom had an awesome Pat Benatar poster on the back of his bedroom door!
And it is definitely great to watch for Halloween especially with a cool Trick or Treat scene that ends with a Goonies gone bad twist!

Valley, nice stuff on Deadly Friend. Great movie... did you remember that it's BASED ON THE NOVEL "Friend." That would be interesting to read. I know you and I both love the music in the movie as well.
So judging by the picture above, Paul wasn't into trick r treating eh? He's not dressed up! He could have easily thrown on his lab coat and gloves, and been a doctor for Halloween, ya think?
I've always loved the face Sam makes after she blasts Mama Fratelli with the basketball. Sick I know, but still... .

The Hand (1981)
"Jon Lansdale is a comic book artist who loses his right hand in a car accident. The hand was not found at the scene of the accident, but it soon returns by itself to follow Jon around, and murder those who anger him." (IMDb)
This was a great old school horror thriller directed by Oliver Stone. Michael Caine gives a good performance although he said in a TV interview that the only reason he did this film was to earn enough to put a down payment on a new garage he was having built.
Stone has a fun cameo scene and there´s a cool sequence which includes Blondie tune "Union City Blue".

OK....my worst Halloween slump in many years, mostly due to house renos that have been chewing my time. I managed to watch only "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown", and "Fat Albert's Halloween Special", in addition to a handful of old TV Halloween episodes....sad indeed!
Hmmmmm....at this point I'm not sure whether to try to play catch up with Halloween, OR, start my christmas movies early! Black Christmas might be an obvious start!
