Over at MovieRetriever.com, we just posted a feature on Ten 80s movies that don't nearly get the credit they so wholeheartedly deserve. Check it out here:
We're big fans of fast-rewind.com (we even mention that in the article), so we figured that if anyone had opinions on our list, it'd be you guys. So... are we complete morons? Semi-coherent? Almost worth reading? Do you agree/disagree? We'd love your take on it (as well as suggestions for future underrated 80s movies lists).
Thanks!

Great list, I would have liked to see 3 O'Clock High, I think that film is way underrated!
Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :
The Hollywood Knights should be on that list.
Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :
MovieRetriever thanks for posting that.
Is it a list of scary movies?
If it is.....here's my top 10 on that:
1.) April Fool's Day 2.) My Bloody Valentine 3.) He Knows Your Alone 4.) Silent Scream 5.) Happy Birthday to Me 6.) Curse 2-The Bite 7.) The Stepfather 8.) The Legacy 9.) 10 to Midnight 10.) Silent Rage

Some interesting choices, I totally agree with Near Dark, Monster Squad and Tapeheads. Really not feeling Dark Crystal or Living Daylights.
Here is my list:
1) The Chocolate War 2)Hiding Out 3)Moving Violations 4)At Close Range 5)Dudes 6)Reckless 7)Spell Binder 8)The Final Countdown 9)Wild Life 10) Plainclothes-Nobody ever talks of this one. Valley, your opinion?
That list reminds me that I should probably update my Movie Hound Golden Movie Retriever book. I have the 2006 edition but should upgrade to the 2008 edition. I'ts a great book that I reference on a regular basis.

Well, it´s a good list, but it could be totally different also. There are many, many 80s movies to pick that are underrated.
I´ve seen all of those except Tapeheads, which i ordered right away.

Riptide, i have Plain Clothes on vhs, but don´t remember much of it. Have to watch it again soon.
I would definitely add Wild Life and Reckless also on my list. Fantastic movies!
Posted by TKO (Member # 1471) on :
I would also like to add The Wild Life, Electric Dreams and Deadly Friend. The fact that they still haven’t gotten a decent DVD-release, proves they are very underappreciated movies.

Devolution here,
I had a list typed up, and I lost it, I'll do it again later.

Hey Sam Hain,
The 2009 edition of VideoHound just came out. But we might be running a contest soon on the site to give out some free copies, so keep checking in.
ISIS - we're actually doing an underrated horror movies list in the next two weeks.
Wild Life and Electric Dreams are great suggestions - I think we're definitely going to be doing another edition of underrated 80s gems soon. The editorial team had a lot to choose from. I personally advocated Cloak & Dagger - a movie that I adored - but it didn't make the cut.

Nice idea, nice list, but, Tapeheads is a terrible movie...
Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
Let me start by saying that was a cool list MovieRetriever.
Like Riptide, I totally agree that "Near Dark" and "Monster Squad" would be on several Rewinders list, but I'm just not sold on some of the others. Also, I agree with others that "The Wild life", "Spellbinder", and "April Fool's Day" are excellent movies.
However with that said, this is a difficult list to compile because "Ten 80s Movies That Don't Get the Credit They Deserve" leaves it kind of wide open for interpretation in my opinion. We are all 80's fans here, so we give credit to certain movies that most of the mainstream population would not consider. A couple of examples would be "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Valley Girl", these movies might be crowd favorite here, but go ask a few people at your workplace their thoughts and watch for the blank expressions.
But I get the idea, so here is my list of 80's Hidden Gems rapid fire with Rewind or IMDB link for your viewing pleasure:
MovieRetriever, I love this kind of stuff, so keep it coming!

Devolution here,
I was making yet another list and it messed up so here we go - the short short version.
1) White Water Summer - Bacon, Astin, good tunes 2) Moving - Pryor, Carvey - lots of good lines 3) Morgan Stewart's Coming Home - Cryer and a great soundtrack 4) Thrashin - Josh Brolin post goonies. 5) Hamburger the Movie - If you've been here long enough, you know it's my favorite. 6) Easy Money - Speaking of Favorite - Rodney does my hometown great justice in this flick. 7) Johnny Dangerously - Fantastic work of Michael Keaton 8) Poltergeist 2 - god is in his holy temple, and the #1 reason I'll never do the worm in Tequila 9) UHF - Weird Al - it's good stuff. 10) The Wraith - Sheen - Fenn - Quaid.
Classics all of them - to me anyway.
I was just trying to pick ones that people didn't choose yet.
But nonetheless, there are many more to be appreciated across the masses.

That's the thing with these lists - they are all very subjective, anc can be for any reason at all - even pretty mainstream movies can make the list...
1. Tom Hanks movie that is underrated: The Man With One Red Shoe. I like this one more than most of the others, but do people talk about it on the street when he is mentioned? No.
2. John Hughes movie that is underrated: has to be Some Kind Of Wonderful. You stop anyone and ask for their top John Hughes movies, and you'll get The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, maybe Sixteen Candles, or Home Alone. rarely SKOW outside of these boards.
3. Comedy film that's underrated: Devo called this one with Johnny Dangerously.
4. Rom-Com that's underrated: Electric Dreams. Never even a proper DVD release. Think of the dross that has been given the full treatment....
5. Eclectic action movie that's underrated: Streets Of Fire. Nobody looks beyond Die Hard for 80s action, which is a shame.
6. Drama movie that's underrated; The Philadelphia Experiment. Great movie, excellent performances.
And so on....
Most of these movies are known (certainly to us) but for some reason they are not as well appreciated or feted as others in the genre, and I'm generally struggling to see why....
Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
Devo, Thrashin' is my fav skateboarding flick. I know "Gleaming the Cube" had Tony Hawk, but the incredible stunts didn't seem to fit the storyline to me. Still enjoyed it, but I like Thrashin' more.
Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
Paul, I agree on "Some Kind of Wonderful", though it was quite popular in my area, so it couldn't go on my hidden gems list, but was close.
I watched it again recently and I'm with you on enjoying this movie over the much more popular "Pretty in Pink".
Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :
I love Streets of Fire-I agree with that one for sure.
I love the soundtrack to Streets of Fire.
If this wasn't meant to be all scary stuff...
Then.....
Here's my new list:
1.) Liar's Moon 2.) Murphy's Romance 3.) The Entity 4.) The Night the Lights went out in Georgia 5.) Gorillas in the Mist 6.) Mickey and Maude 7.) Touched by Love 8.) American Flyers 9.) The Wilderness Family 10.) Jagged Edge
Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
You forgot "Fire with Fire" twice?
Posted by logan5 (Member # 1467) on :
Lots and lots of good films.
For my money, the Richard Dreyfuss movie 'Let it Ride' is one of the best and most underrated comedies of the 80's. Yet it never gets talked about (even on here).

Thrashin' kicks @$$! Killer soundtrack as well.
I recently purchased The Entity, but haven't watched it yet. Looking forward to it now that I see it on a list above.
Fire with Fire has to be on a list. As well as Electric Dreams. Love Madsen.
Can't Buy Me Love and SKOW. Great movies as well, but I thought they did get some decent credit.
UHF is also awesome. Michael Richards pre-Kramer and Weird Al - great.
I wouldn't mind seeing The Manhatten Project up there as well. I love that movie.
Spellbinder is brilliant. Got terrible reviews almost everywhere I looked. They don't know what a good movie is.
Just One of the Guys - in a word, greatness.
The list could be infinite...There's just too many.
Posted by MovieRetriever (Member # 7262) on :
Logan5 - totally, totally agree about Let It Ride, which ranks as one of my favorite gambling movies ever. (And, which I always forget, features a very young Cynthia Nixon.)
And Morgan Stewart's Coming Home is similiarly awesome. I always wanted my own chainsaw after seeing that movie.

Right Valley!
Besides.. Thrashin' had Tony Alva in it, my favorite and THE most influential skateboarder ever. Most stunts in Gleaming the Cube were done by freestyler Rodney Mullen, not Tony Hawk.
Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :
Mullen rocked the Freestyle back then. I was big time into boarding as well when I was a kid. Check this site out:
I can't believe I forgot Fire with Fire....I think it's because I never saw it in the 80's....I saw it within the past 5 years...because of everyone talking about it on here. I probably have watched it 10 times already.
I never saw April Fool's Day in the 80's either...but they are 2 of my all time favorite movies.

No, not me. That is a young Rodney Mullen. I wish I was that good back in the day. He is a pro-skater specializing in "freestyle." He also did stunts in skateboard movies.
Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :
Gosh ...look at the muscles in his legs for such a young kid.

I always thought 'River's Edge' didn't get as much credit as it should have
Posted by StevenHW (Member # 509) on :
Barry Levinson's "Tin Men" (from 1987), starring Richard Dreyfuss, Danny DeVito, and Barbara Hersey, is a truly underrated movie that never seems to get mentioned here. Maybe because it's not a "teen" type of movie. But it's still cute and charming, in a way. Not much in the way of plot, but a good character study.
Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
It has only been two years, but I totally forgot about the movies and the work I put into that list.. "Near Dark" would move down my selections in retrospect.. but overall still a valid list.
