A fire on the backlot at Universal Hollywood caused extensive damage to the set--the second time it's happened following an arson blaze in 1990. The full extent of the damage wasn't made specific in the article it was mentioned in, but I assume they can repair it within reason. Also taken out were the King Kong building on the backlot ride and warehouses of tapes.

What kind of tapes, I wonder?

I saw this on the news. I hope they can fix it. They said the tapes where NOT the original tapes from movies but like a secondary set or something like that. I hope they are right about this...

Save the clock tower, save the clock tower... Wait, it's TOO LATE...
According to this, every film or tv series ever made by Universal was damaged but there were duplicates..........

I've heard that the clock tower / town hall was untouched. It was the buildings along the side of the square which were damaged.
As we all know, this square was also used in Gremlins so there's lots of 80s film history in that little set.
What confuses me though: I remember a fire at Universal a few years ago in which the clock tower supposedly burned down. Am I imagining that or did it really happen?

There was another fire at Universal Studios back in the early 90's (1991 or '92, IIRC), but I am not sure which sections were affected.

Gigawatt (I love the handle),
I think you're right about this. I bet Nick would know... Nick?

Use the Delorean to go back in time and snuff out the fire before it even starts. Duh.
