I think i've brought this up before........but have you all noticed how 50's in the 80's was such a trend?
So many movies were a "new" story not remakes.....but set in the 50's and 60's in the 1980's.
I even bought this book awhile back "Fifties Style: then and now" 1988 there's everything in Fashion,Architecture, Furniture, Product design discussed in the book.
What started me thinking about it.......was watching Peggy Sue got Married on tv....I myself have always loved 50's style.....maybe it's subliminally those 80's movies I loved making me love the 50's??? maybe??? My apartments filled with 50's furniture and items haha

Maybe its like today with the 80s references cropping up everywhere...
People who grew up in the 80s are now adding references to fond memories into their productions...
...People who grew up in the 50s were old enough in the 80s to add what they fondly remembered into productions they were involved in..?

What about The Heavenly Kid or Prom Night II: Hello Mary Lou?? This had the 50's and 80's thing going cause they kept flashing back...LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!
How about Christine cause the car was from the 50's and when the radio would come on, it was playing 50's music, which by the way I totally think rocks! I love that period between 1955 and 1962. My Dad used to play all that stuff in the car when I was little so I grew up on Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Little Richard, etc.

Actually, the "trend" for 50's and early 60's nostalgia began in the early 70's! The earliest evidence that I can recall was "American Graffitti" (1973) and "The Lords Of Flatbush". Later, there was the "Happy Days" TV show and the original Broadway opening of the musical "Grease", which later became the sanitized movie version. In the late 70's, there was also "Animal House" and "The Wanderers" (both films took place in the early 60's).
I enjoyed the other person's contributions on the list of 80's movies that takes place in the 50's and 60's. I'll come up with a list of them later on.

Nick you got me thinking and you are so correct......I love the 80's references in tv shows like Scrubs, Family Guy.......my favorite show Medium had an 80's flashback episode.......which I think you can actually watch online, I highly recommend!! there are few tv shows I love and that is one of them....!

In the late 70s & 80s there seemed to be two distinct schools of cinema: one was the neo-realist serious drama dealing with Vietnam, doemstic social issues etc, and the other was pure escapism. Pure escapism won out in the 80s (though serious drama was king throughout most of the 70s) and a lot of it harked backed to the 50s in its style or even in its serialised format (e.g. star wars in the tradition of flash gordon and zorro). Very rarely do you see an 80s made 50s set film that deals with both: 'The Outsiders' was one.

I too noticed that. My mom was in her early 20s back then and she said she loved the bobby socks and fluffed out skirts. It's kinda how the 90s and early 00s were all about Woodstock and the hippie era. Now is all about film noir and anytime between 1920 and 1950. I love it. In the 80s I was big into 50s music and such... I got to see some of the "real" 50s groups sing at various shows. The best one I saw was "The Platters". Tony Williams (lead singer) was still singing with the band. It was great!

Another good film that was escapism and serious social issues was Dirty Dancing. It was set in 1963, but it dealt with poverty, abortion, teen sex, and loyalty....but it is one of the best escape movies for us girls!!!
